Defense Contract Survey Underway In Orange County Combined Manufacturing Strength First Step in Obtaining Peace Orders First steps in the formation of an association designed to bring together the combined mechanical and manufacturing strength of Orange county for the purpose of obtaining defense projects were taken in Santa Ana Saturday with the mimeographing of forms for a survey of all shops in the county. Sellers Speaks The action Friday came as a result of a meeting held Friday at Daniger's at which J. E. Sellers, of the Office of Production Management, Los Angeles division, outlined steps that must be taken if the small manufacturer is to gain a share of the defense work. Sellers warned the group that materials would not be available for use in regular commercial lines and that to obtain materials, it would be necessary to gain priorities through doing defense work. The OPM officials made no specific recommendations but advised the group that unless they were joined "in some fashion," either through a corporation or an association, that the individual firms stood little chance of getting defense contracts. Use Prepared Form Sellers said that the OPM has a prepared form that will facilitate the survey of the county manufacturing potentialities and the form reached the Santa Ana chamber of commerce Friday for distribution to every manufacturer. Inventory Asked On Trucks, Buses In Orange County Pertinent Information on Available Vehicles for Emergency to be Gathered Beginning tomorrow, truck and bus owners of Orange County will receive questionaires from the department an dthe national designed to provide pertinent information relative to transportation facilities available in this area in case of invasion by an enemy power, disaster or other emergency. The inventory is being made at the request of the highway traffic advisory committee to the war department an dthe national defense advisory commission as a part of the national defense program. The questionaries are to be returned to the Department of Motor Vehicles in franked envelopes provided for that purpose. Truck and bus owners will be asked to give a physical description of the vehicles owned by them, number of axles and wheels, body types laden weight, where stored, whether available for lease in case of emergency, etc. Upon their return to Sacramento they will be checked and tabulated according to each section of the state so that a complete list of available vehicles for each area may be made. An appeal to truck and bus owners to fill out the questionaires promptly and mail them to Sacramento was made today by James M. Carter, Director of Motor Vehicles. Use Prepared Form Sellers said that the OPM has a prepared form that will facilitate the survey of the county manufacturing potentialities and the form reached the Santa Ana chamber of commerce Friday for distribution to every manufacturer in the county. President R. H. Boney, of the Anaheim chamber of commerce was present at the meeting. When the forms have been filled out and returned to the chamber of commerce, an organization meeting will be held and definite plans will be made, it was decided at Saturday's meeting. The meeting was called by L. Earle Phillips, chairman of the subcommittee of the industrial committee of the Santa Ana chamber of commerce. Become Contact Agent Under the plan suggested by Sellers, the association would become the contact agent for all the manufacturers joining the association and would have one man appointed by the group to act for the entire organization. When the survey is completed, the tabulated account of the entire county's manufacturing strength would then be made known to the OPM; which would in turn aid the association in obtaining defense contracts.
