Mrs. Sydney Pellew's invention of her preserved orange delicacies has the same attractive Alice-in-Wonderland quality about it. It all came about when the orange market was so low that the pickers weren't even brothering with smaller fruit. One day Mrs. Pellew was making grape jelly and gazing rather dolefully out of the kitchen window at the orange abandoned to the elements. HAS MOMENTOUS IDEA Vaguely, at first, she thought that it was a shame to see such food go to waste. Her second thought that was: "Why not try to make something from oranges besides America?" somewhat anemic version of the English standby, orange marmalade?" It is the consensus of opinion among cooks that oranges won't "jell", but after a couple of dozens of experiments they "jelled" for Mrs. Pellew. And she knew she had some thing. The next problem was to place it on the market. Mrs. Pellew and her husband took council and hit upon ANAHEIM GAZETTE— (Since 1870) Accurate Dependable 100% Coverage—99% Local News Want Ads 25c 259 E. It is the concensus of opinion among cooks that oranges won't "jell", but after a couple of dozens of experiments they "jelled" for Mrs. Pellew. And she knew she had some thing. The next problem was to place it on the market. Mrs. Pellew and her husband took council and hit upon a novel plan. OPEN SUNKIST RANCH They converted their home at Sunkist and South Sts., southeast of Anaheim, into an eating place the Sunkist Ranch, served their orange delicacies with their meals and then sold their guests jars of these products. Not only was the selling scheme a success, but so was the Sunkist Ranch. So good were their means that the Sunkist Ranch is included in the 1941 edition of Duncan Hines' "Adventures in Good Eating," a guide book of national scope on where and what to eat. On their dinner menu, the Pellews feature chicken and baked ham,—ham, by the way, baked in orange juice, which is less better than mother ever dreamed of making. DESSERTS OF CITRUS FRUIT Their desserts all are of citrus products, orange pie, lemon and lime pies. Orange, according to Mrs. Pellew, is the most popular. Recently Mrs. Pellew perfected an orange syrup to be used over ice cream. She serves this as the Sunkist Ranch as "Sunkist Sundae." At present she is testing it for its "keeping" qualities. She has some that was made four months ago and it still is in first condition. As soon as she is convinced that her syrup for "Sunkist Sundae has the all-important keeping quality for commerce, Mrs. Pellew plans to place it on the market.
