Much Citrus Juice in Demand "The problem now is not of selling canned citrus juices, orange juice, but of producing the product in sufficient quantities to supply the demand," declared A. Gabrielsen, sales manager of the canned goods department of the Mutual Orange Distributors on his return from a seven-weeks' tour of the eastern markets. "The question the brokers ask now is 'How soon can you deliver it?'" Gabrielsen continued. The 1940 pack of orange juice canned by Cal-Juices, Inc., the canning plant owned and operated by five Orange county packing associations affiliated with the Mutual Orange Distributors, long has been sold and most of the 1940 pack of concentrate is contracted for. INCREASED DEMAND SEEN World political and economic conditions, according to Gabrielsen and others familiar with the canned products deal, indicate an increasing demand for canned citrus fruits. Take, for example, the need of citrus fruits in England and other countries blocked by the warring factions or the lack of overseas transportation facilities. It is apparent that canned citrus fruits must take the place of fresh fruits in those countries until the war ends. Canned products do not require as much care in transportation as fresh fruit, and they can be shipped in various types of containers—cartons, wooden boxes of varied sizes, even in burlap bags if necessary. On arrival at destination, the canned products may readily be distributed and stored more safely than fresh fruit. In fact they can be stored in underground shelters for months. Specialty Crop Prices Discussed An outline of efforts being made to secure parity prices for California specialty crops as well as the basic crops of America will be given by R. W. Blackburn, national secretary of the Farm Bureau, at a regional meeting at Vista Saturday. Proper consideration for California's specialty crops in the fight being made for an increase of farm income in the nation is being sought activity by the Farm Bureau. Alex Johnson, in charge of marketing research for the California Farm Bureau, assisted in securing an inclusion in the national regulations of the Commodities Board. Market Installs Produce Condition With hot-weather season coming, the Zinda brothers announce installation of new air-conditioned vegetable market fixtures at Stop'n' Shop food store, 344 Center street. “This new apparatus will metically keep the vegetables through the hot hours of the day so that the housewives always assured of strictly crisp vegetables from this market.” Mr. Zinda states. “This wrinkle in market equipment line with our policy of giving the best service possible to patrons.” The vegetable department under the management of It is apparent that canned citrus fruits must take the place of fresh fruits in those countries until the war ends. MUCH JUICE CANNED The same situation may apply in our own country if the defense program forces requisition of rail transportation and delays movement of fresh fruits from producing areas to areas of consumption. One case of 24 12-oz. cans of orange juice equals approximately a box of fresh fruit and a case of 24 8-oz. cans of 5 to 1 concentrate contains the food value of one full-sized box of fresh fruit. Canning plants in Florida and Texas are running heavy packs of citrus fruits—as much as half the Texas grapefruit crop is going into cans—and the canners are finding a ready market for their goods. “There is no reason to doubt,” says Gabrielsen, “that the products of Cal-Juices, which already have won favor among consumers, will not serve as a means of meeting a defense measure, not only in our own country but in foreign lands as well.” Proper consideration for California’s specialty crops in the fight being made for an increase of farm income in the nation is being sought activity by the Farm Bureau. Alex Johnson, in charge of marketing research for the California Farm Bureau, assisted in securing an inclusion in the national regulations of the Commodity Credit Corporation which will provide for supporting a price for producers of all commodities of not less than 85% of the parity price. Orange county representatives are expected to announce to the group at the meeting place of the next meeting which will be held in Orange county on August 23.
