The Navy Entertains—for Hemispheric Defense Once more clearly demonstrating the desire of automobile manufacturers to cooperate to the fullest extent in any matter relating to national or hemispheric defense, the Ford Motor Company last week placed 13 identical new Mercury 8 sedans at the disposal of the U.S. Navy. The Mercurys were selected to transport the most important group of Latin American naval officers ever to visit Southern California, on a whirlwind, five-day tour of defense strongholds. The visitors, 33 in number and including the chiefs of staff of 11 countries, inspected the Lockheed, Douglas and Consolidated Aircraft plants, the Terminal Island Naval area at Long Beach, the Marine Corps Base at San Diego, and the Naval Air Station at Coronado, among other important points. Heinemann Heads Young Farmers Nelson Rogers Presides At Annual Meeting of Junior Farm Bureau Lawrence Heinemann, Route 2, Orange, was elected chairman of the Junior Farm Bureau of Orange county, at the annual meeting in Farm Bureau hall last week. Floyd Epperly, Route 4, Santa Ana, was elected vice-chairman; Mrs. Norman Elliott, Route 1, Santa Ana, secretary and treasurer, and Jack Lynch, La Habra, director. Nelson Rogers, of Anaheim, past president of the bureau conducted the meeting. F. R. Wilcox, treasurer of the California Fruit Growers exchange, was the speaker. He discussed the future development of agriculture as it affects young people. Wilcox predicted that during the next two or three years the farmer will receive a larger share of the national income. However, he predicted that after this era of prosperity, there will be a period of two or three years when the farm income will be the lowest yet experienced. The speaker told his audience that Alex Johnson, marketing director of the State Farm bureau, now is in Washington attempting to have fruits and vegetables placed on the same commercial basis as farm staples. Representatives of farm bureaus in other cities and of the young Japanese farmers' organization, the Nesci, were guests at the meeting. Milne, suspended superintendent of the Whittier State School for Boys, who is accused of driving while intoxicated, again was postponed when his case was called Tuesday before Justice of the Peace Charles Kuchel. Milne did not appear, but his attorney, Otto Jacobs, of Santa Ana, entered a plea of not guilty on behalf of his client and asked a jury trial. The trial was set for 9 a.m. July 22. Milne and his attorney appeared unexpectedly at the court Monday. Milne remained in the car, but Jacobs appeared before Judge Kuchel and explained that he and Milne had made a mistake in the date of the trial. Milne was arrested May 13 after his car had careened off the road and crashed into a clump of trees at Manchester and Harbor boulevards. His trial originally was scheduled for May 26. On that date his attorney appeared before Judge Kuchel and asked a continuance on the grounds that Milne was ill. The case then was continued to last Tuesday. Dismissal charges have been filed against Milne charging that he condoned brutality to the boy-inmates of Whittier. Last week Milne filed with the state personnel board a general denial of Better Pension System Urged Determined efforts are being made by the Legislature to remove all uncertainty regarding the continuance of federal payments for the elderly. A committee of four legislators is in Washington to find a solution of the problem that has developed from the difference in state and national laws regulating the assistance. Futher, the Assembly has adopted resolution urging Congress to enact legislation that will improve the pension system. Because of non-conformity of state and national laws there is a possibility, the resolution sets forth, that federal benefits for the elderly may end on July 1. Termination of these benefits would place a heavy tax burden on the counties and would "cause great hardship to a large proportion of our senior citizens now receiving old age assistance, according to the Assembly's resolution." Assemblymen of Southern California counties who were co-authors of the resolution and who are active in the movement to solve the elderly aid problem include Mrs. Jeanette E. Daley of San Diego, Charles W. Stream of Chula Vista and Clyde A. Watson of Orange. Ten In Anaheim Ask Citizenship Ten Anaheim residents are included in the class of 62 persons who will appear in Superior court in Santa Ana on June 11 seeking naturalization papers. This is the largest class to ask citizenship at one time thus far in 1941. The Anaheim residents are: Franz Trapp, Emma Trapp, Johannes Otto Trapp, Mrs. Gladys Young, Kerham Alexanderian. Last week Milne filed with the state personnel board a general denial of the charges. As a result a formal hearing on these accusations will be held at a later date.
