Accomplishments Of WPA Disclosed Large Amount of Construction Done In Past Five Years WPA construction accomplishments in Orange county over a period of five and a half years are revealed in a summary released today by the southern California administrator's office in Los Angeles. The report revealed that WPA has constructed or improved 185 miles of highways, roads and streets; five bridges and viaducts; 101 public buildings, and an imposing list of other achievements, many of them now considered to have an important bearing upon the national preparedness program. In the five and a half years from the beginning of the program in July, 1935, through 1940, WPA in Orange county built or improved 41 miles of water mains and distribution lines, 37 miles of storm and sanitary sewers, 55 miles of rural or farm-to-market roads, and 79 miles of city streets and alleys. Four bridges and viaducts were completely constructed; one was improved. Their total length was 340 feet. Culverts built or improved by WPA totalled 114; sidewalks and paths, 25 miles; curbs, 17 miles; light standards erected, 296. Under the public buildings program, WPA built or improved 43 schools and libraries, 21 auditoriums, gymnasiums and other recreational buildings, eight offices and administrative buildings, one penal institution. four dormitories, two firehouses, nine garages, two storage buildings and arsenals and 11 unclassified public buildings. Anaheim Red Cross Chapter Works On Many Subjects During Meeting The regular monthly meeting of the Anaheim chapter, American Red Cross was held Tuesday evening in the chapter's office in the city hall, with Mrs. J. W. Truxaw, chairman, presiding. The resignation of Major Raymond Smith, as disaster preparedness chairman, was read and accepted. Glen Peck will head up this important committee, Mrs. Truxaw announced. Mrs. W. E. Melton, chairman of the first aid, reported 14 standard first aid certificates have been issued to a class completed by Dr. Alan D. Hanson, instructor, at Los Alamitos. This class has also finished the advanced course. A new standard class opened yesterday at the Anaheim union high school for W.P.A. foremen with Ed Gantenbein of Orange as teacher. Plans for sending a chapter representative to the American national aquatic school which will be held at Upper Lake, in Lake county from June 11 to 21 were discussed. This school is for the College Operetta Slated Tomorrow Jessie Thatcher Plays In Story of Life Of Stephen Foster Portraying the life-story of the immortal American composer Stephen Foster, the Fullerton junior college operetta, Wildflowers, will be presented tomorrow at 8:15 p.m. in the school auditorium. The public is cordially invited free of charge. Mrs. Laura R. Warren, executive secretary of the Orange county council, who attended the meeting, announced plans for a high school Junior Red Crossner meeting the evening of May at Staar's Orange Gardens with Jimmy Power of the Anaheim union high school will give report of his experiences and delegate to the national conference of the Junior Red Cross in Washington, D.C. April 24. At this meeting the council will award the Junior Red Cross flag to the school report the greatest accomplishments during the year. The Laguna Bend high school was awarded the year ago. More workers in the production department are needed on Tuesdays at the Ebell club, Mrs. H. Alden, chairman of this service reported. Materials are on hand for workers. Members of the two home nursing classes which have been taken at the Anaheim high school Mrs. Quessie Anderson, Red Cross nurse of Santa Ana, have taken their examinations, Mrs. J. Salisbury, chairman, stated. A meeting of the classes and presentation of the certificates is being arranged, dates to be announced later. The chapter voted to send letter to the county board of officers urging them to approve the necessary funds to continue the maternity nurse service which has been carried out. Under the public buildings program, WPA built or improved 43 schools and libraries, 21 auditoriums, gymnasiums and other recreational buildings, eight offices and administrative buildings, one penal institution, four dormitories, two firehouses, nine garages, two storage buildings and arsenals and 11 unclassified public buildings. Thirteen outmoded or unsafe structures were demolished. WPA-built recreational facilities include stadiums, grandstands, bleachers, parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, horseshoe and tennis courts; swimming and wading pools, bandshell, golf course, and others. Under public utilities and sanitation, WPA built or improved two utility plants, 41 miles of water mains and distribution lines, 37 miles of storm and sanitary sewers, five storage tanks and reservoirs, 474 manholes and catch basins, 41 miles of telephone and telegraph lines. Outstanding flood and erosion control accomplishments in Orange county included construction of nearly 20 miles of firebreaks, 150 linear feet of levees and embankments, 29,168 linear feet of retaining walls and revetments, 680 conservation flood and erosion control dams, extermination of 1,922,000 rodents, reconstruction or improvement of 12 miles of fire and forest trails and six miles of streambed improvement. WPA constructed 26 airway markers, the report shows, in Orange county. Rites Conducted For Mrs. Jacoby Funeral services were conducted under the auspices of the Christian Science church yesterday afternoon from the Backs, Campbell & Kaulbars chapel for Mrs. Emma H. Jacoby, 62. Burial was made in Inglewood cemetery, with the ritualistic service of the Order of Eastern Star being held at the graveside. Mrs. Jacoby, a native of Indiana but a resident of Anaheim for the past 19 years, died Sunday evening at the family home at 924 E. Center St. She is survived by her husband. Outdoor Girl To Be Selected Soon Horse Show and Fair Committee to Choose County’s Candidate Great interest is again centerering around the Salinas Outdoor Girl contest which is an annual event in connection with the Orange County Fair and Horse Show. As in previous years each county in the state is represented by a contestant at the annual Salinas Rodeo, July 17 to 20. The girls are feted and entertained lavishly while there, and the winner this year at Salinas will be given a $500 cash scholarship which can be used at any junior college, college or university in California or a trip for herself and mother, the destination to be announced shortly. This coveted honor was given an Orange county girl in 1935 when Barbara Rowland was acclaimed the outdoor girl for California and won a trip to Honolulu for herself and mother, Mrs. Fred Rowland. This year the Orange county contest is under the supervision of Mrs. Edward M. Hall and Mrs. John Ball, members of the Santa Ana unit of the Assistance League of Orange County. They have contacted every high school in Orange county and several girls have signified their intention to enter. These contestants will be judged on horsemanship, health, personality, and intelligence with each classification rating 25 per cent. The judging of personality and intelligence will be held at the home of Mrs. Robert Northcross, 1318 Spurgeon street, Santa Ana, Saturday, and all contestants are urged to be there at 10 a.m. The horsemanship judging will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday June Three Persons Hurt In Traffic Mishap Three persons, including two children, were injured when two cars collided last Thursday morning at the intersection of Broadway and Palm St., according to Anaheim police reports. Injured were Mrs. Alma G. Sherman, 32, 209 Ellsworth Ave.; Rogene Sherman, 12, same address, and Beverly Zabel, 14, of 221 Ellsworth Ave. Cars involved were driven by Mrs. Sherman and Esther Rose Hannah, 54, of Banning. Golf Association’s Field Day Thursday Finals in the Anaheim Golf association were played Sunday at the Hacienda Country club and were won by Mel Salveson of Anaheim over Dick Glover, coach at Anaheim union high school. Placement Bureau Open for Summer Orange county employers were today notified that the Santa Ana junior college placement bureau will function throughout the summer vacation months, enabling merchants and businessmen to obtain trained students for full or part time jobs at the least inconvenience. Miss Genevieve Humiston, who directs the activities of the service, announced that more than 200 students have registered for summer employment, and that applications have been placed in more than a dozen fields of endeavor. "We have requested all collegians who will be available for jobs to register as they can be given vocational examinations and listed in work classifications," Miss Humiston said. She explained that the bureau cooperates with the city schools centralized employment office and fills requests for workers in practically any field of endeavor. A total of 450 full and part time placements were made during the current school year. The figures include nearly 300 airplane mechanics graduates who were placed in southland aircraft factories. General work classifications for which summer students have registered include general office work, telephone operation, bookkeeping, office assistance, sales service, office machine repairs, messenger clerks, show card and window decoration, gardening, and various odd jobs.
