Tony Jeli bowed last night, 6 to 2, after the Fliers had trimmed Gus Hallbourg, 5 to 3, in the series opener Tuesday night. Although in eighth place, the Aces are only a half-game back of Riverside, the sixth-place club, with Merced virtually tied with the Reds. Superb pitching by Bus DeVolder and Gus Hallbourg and a dynamic batting assault combined to give the Aces a double victory over the Presno Cards Sunday and an even split in the four-game series. Presno took the Friday and Saturday games, 10 to 3 and 5 to 1, but the Aces came back Sunday to win, 4 to 1 and 7 to 4. DeVolder, making his first start since the home opener, hurled five innings of brilliant ball before tiring. He got by the sixth without damage, but gave way to Hallbourg in the seventh. The Cards scored their lone run off Gus in the eighth round. Meanwhile, Anaheim pecked away at the offerings of VanSlate and French, with Manager Joe Huarte leading the assault, for the victory. Plans for the event, which will be held in the City park, are being arranged by Mayor Charles A. Pearson, Louis H. Heskins and John A. Morgan, president and secretary, respectively, of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce, and Ralph S. Summers, president of the Anaheim Realty Board. The Goodwill Tour caravan will leave Santa Ana early Wednesday morning, journeying as far east as San Bernardino and Redlands before returning by the way of Pemona, Brea and Fullerton. It expects to reach Anaheim at 4:24 p.m. Services Held for Mrs. John Ritchie Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtle M. Ritchie, who died Tuesday night, were conducted this afternoon from Backs, Campbell & Kaulbars chapel. Rev. Stanley Frederick George officiated and burial was made in Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale. Mrs. Ritchie, born in Wisconsin, came to Anaheim 29 years ago and had resided on Lincoln avenue ever since. She is survived by her husband, John H., and a son, Frank, of Porterville. Rites Planned for Mrs. Kemper Friday Recitation of the holy rosary for Katherine E. Kemper, 85, will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the Backs, Campbell & Kaulbars chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. tomorrow from St. Boniface Catholic church, Mrs. Kemper died Tuesday night at her home, 609 W. Center St. A native of Wisconsin, Mrs. Kemper came to Anaheim 22 years ago. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Thomas F. Morgan, and a grandchild, Nancy A. Morgan. Carroll Bound Over DeVolder, making his first start since the home opener, hurled five innings of brilliant ball before tiring. Blanked for five innings in the nightcap by O'Boyle, the Aces broke out with a rash of base hits after two were out in the sixth, and before the fire works ended seven runs had crossed the plate. Tony Chapetta was given a chance to show how well he had recovered from an arm injury, but after throwing to three batters he gave way to Tony Ponce. Fresno drove in two of the runs Chapetta had put on base in the first inning, and got to Ponce for another pair in the sixth. New alignment of the infield that put Huarte on second and Phil Salstrom on third steadied the inner defense greatly and Joe's consistent hitting added considerable punch. Anaheim dropped the odd game of the Bakersfield series by splitting even in the last two contests. Manager Huarte elected to give Ponce a chance to prove his condition Wednesday night and the experiment ended disastrously, 15 to 3. The Aces came back Thursday night behind the fine pitching of Hallbourg to win, 4 to 2. Ponce obvicusly wasn't ready for action and soon gave way to Huarte, who had but little better success. Danny Rowland, new southpaw gunner, made his debut and showed marked wildness. Meanwhile, Elmer Orello was southpawing the Aces into submission, allowing only six hits, including a triple by Doug Wheeler and a pair of singles by Huarte. Three singles and a brace of errors were good for a trio of runs in the sixth inning Thursday, and that was sufficient for Hallbourg to win on. The Aces came up with two doubles plays to make Hallbourg's work easier. Line scores: Wednesday R H E Bakersfield 206 103 300-15 16 3 Anaheim 000 290 001-3 6 3 Bullwinkle and Leonard; Ponce, Huarte, Rowland and Charowhas. CARROLL BOUND OVER TO SUPERIOR CURT Robert Carroll, 23, of Parry St., was bound over to superior court for trial on a burglary charge at the close of a preliminary examination conducted before City Judge Frank Tausch this morning. Carroll was arrested about 5 a.m. Sunday in the alley off the 100 block on North Los Angeles street, being captured after he had assertedly dropped a blanket in which he carried 17 pairs of shoes. The shoes were identified by T. W. Stuard as having been stolen from the show-window at the J. C. Penney Co. store. The window had been broken.
