Auxiliary of VFW Assists Hospital
Local Group Active in Supplying Needs of Disabled Veterans
A recent conversation which a Gazette representative had with Mrs. Theresa Hasler, newly-installed president of the Anaheim Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary, developed into a discussion of the activities of the auxiliary as they pertain to the Veterans Administration Facility both in West Los Angeles and San Fernando. What Mrs. Hasler had to say was so interesting that the Gazette representative requested permission to pass the information on to readers of this newspaper.
Mrs. Hasler is thoroughly familiar with her subject, having served during the past two years as hospital chairman for the auxiliary. Her visits to the hospitals at West Los Angeles and San Fernando have been numerous, and that the work of the Anaheim group is highly appreciated is verified by letters which the Anaheim woman has received recently from officials of the two institutions.
The Veterans Administration Facility at West Los Angeles covers an area of 670 acres, of which 170 acres are set aside for use of the Neuropsychiatric hospital (commonly known as N.P.) The N.P. section has sufficient buildings to house 14 wards, the dietetic department and administration offices: The medical aspect is cared for by 11 doctors, one dentist, 39 nurses and approximately 65 attendants, and the present bed capacity is 1004, with 951 occupied at last reports. It is in this field

VFW Distribution Patriotic Cards
All Anaheim Merchandise Given Signs; New Officers Installed
Members of Anaheim VFW Post No. 3173 have been during the past few days buting patriotic holiday cards to all Anaheim members. This service is entirely free cost or obligation and coverage of the city is planned.
The object of this work officials said, is to relieve businessmen of an unethical use by vendors not qualified to solicit contributions, and make their approach free of sentiment or duty in an effort to exact tions. These abused methods for some time created an array of resentment on the part of chants toward veteran organizations, and the plan as outline eliminate any chances to defraud.
Cards will also be prepared Armistice Day on the same day of distribution, it was said.
New officers of the post active following the regular annual installation ceremonies last Thursday evening. In into office were Viggo P. commander; George E. senior vice commander; Johnler, junior vice commander; Wisser, quartermaster; Jackle, chaplain; Godfrey J. post advocate; Walter Bittner surgeon; Emory J. Schillin jutant; John C. Martens, off the day; Sam M. Benson, A. H. Strempel and Clare Carr, color bearers; Con Wiens and David A. Jones.

The medical aspect is cared for by 11 doctors, one dentist, 39 nurses and approximately 65 attendants, and the present bed capacity is 1004, with 951 occupied at last reports. It is in this field that the Anaheim auxiliary does most of its work.
As regards the portion of the facility other than the N.P., this is divested into three sections consisting of the general hospital convalescent hospital, and the domiciliary. More than 5900 veterans are being cared for at this facility, which is the largest of 86 veterans institutions in the country. The cemetery consists of 70 acres and there are 19,150 buried there.
The function of the N.P. hospital is to rehabilitate the mentally sick veterans. At this hospital patients are given the best medical and psychiatric care obtainable. This is supplemented by physio therapy, occupational, physical and recreational therapy, and through these agencies every effort is made to restore patients to health.
Where does the Anaheim auxiliary fit into this picture? Simply by supplying a large quantity of articles needed for the comfort and entertainment of these patients. The auxiliary gathers together and sends to the hospital as many used decks of playing cards, old magazines, silk materials for rugs, and yarn as it can, for each of these articles is used extensively in the work with the veterans being cared for in the N.P. hospital. The auxiliary also sews comforts, bed jackets, bed socks, wheelchair robes and other similar articles and presents them to both the West Los Angeles and San Fernando facilities. The hospital at San Fernando cares for tuberculosis patients.
Naturally, members of the auxiliary cannot do this work without a certain amount of outside help. For that reason, the organization
Here’s a Story For Dog Lovers
For many years it has been known that man’s best friend is his dog, but in the case of W. G. Gordon, 852 N. Clementine St., it isn’t his dog but the dog across the street.
Amos, the dog became friends with the Gordons about two months ago and since that time Amos has visited them many times. He and Gordon have even been practicing some tricks. In all of his visits, however, Amos had never learned where Gordon's place of business is; that is until Monday afternoon.
Monday Gordon was working in his leather and saddle shop when he heard a whining at the front door and, of course, went to investigate. When he reached the door his friend Amos greeted him with all of the joyous wiggles that his little black body could create. Gordon was so pleased and surprised to see his friend, unaccompained, find his own way to the shop that he went out and secured several large bonees for him.
