AN OPEN LETTER TO F. D. R. Below Appears Copy of Letter Air Mailed to the President of the United States From Citizens Association of Orange County, Calif. Santa Ana, Calif. April 6th, 1941 The Honorable Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States, The White House, Washington, D. C. Dear Mr. President: On this the twenty-fourth anniversary of the entry of our great country into the first World War to "make the world safe for democracy," we urge you to immediately and without further delay use the prestige and influence of your high office to supress the strikes in our defense industries and in agriculture, and that you cause to be arrested and imprisoned the saboteurs and agitator leaders of these strikes who are thwarting our all-out aid to Great Britain, our own defense program, and who are violating the right of our people and our nation to work free from fear, intimidation and coercion, which is a civil liberty as sacred as freedom from slavery. These days of national anxiety demand there must be no sabotaging of American industry, no obstruction to employment, no termites in production and distribution, no senseless labor wars with their unnecessary closing of the shop door. You warned all of us in your Jackson Day speech that, "You have to work overtime and work harder" and that, "We have seen how the workers of France were betrayed by their so-called champions, the Communists. For no matter what Communist lips have to say, their actions have proved that in their hearts they care nothing for the real rights of free labor." We all know what happened to the people of France under President Blum's regime, and it was a republic of free people then, the same as ours is now. To say the same thing cannot and will not happen here if present conditions are allowed to continue is a dangerous fallacy. Representative Martin Dies speaking from the record of his Committee, recently declared there were 500 Communists in key positions under the Government in Washington. Notwithstanding this exposure, not a single one of these Communists on the public payroll, where he is both a burden and a menace to the taxpayers who support him, has been removed. This is true of one of your own key position appointees, National Labor Relations Board Member Edwin S. Smith, whom the House Committee's record shows was on the Executive Committee of the Washington branch of the American League for Peace and Democracy, which league was demonstrated before a Congressional Committee to be a "transmission belt for Communism." May we who represent the informed public opinion of this County's 130,000 population, respectfully urge, as a start towards a successful solution of the problems that threaten our National security today, that you immediately act to— 1st. Replace Secretary of Labor Perkins whom Senator Byrd of Virginia has charged with being "derelict in her duties," with a competent and strong Secretary of Labor, experienced in labor relations. 2nd. Replace National Labor Relations Board Member Edwin S. Smith with a competent, experienced, strong and fair labor relations man about whom there is no taint of subversive elements. 3rd. Remove from the Office of Production Management, Associate Director Sidney Hillman whose divided interests between that job and his other job with the C. I. O. (Union) at an enormous salary renders him unfit for that position; and delegate to Wm. S. Knudsen full authority and power to act for the best interests of our country as the single head of our National Defense Organization. 4th. Delegate full authority and power to act in strikes and labor disturbances to your recently organized National Defense Mediation Board. 5th. Immediately and without "waiting a few days longer" certify to that Board all strikes now in progress or threatened in defense industries or interstate commerce. This letter is not written in a partisan spirit, nor to embarrass you, but today there is no middle ground. The conditions of the world forbid pussyfooting. Every one of our people must devote his strength and join his voice in the protection of those basic fundamental policies which have made America a great nation. These policies must be supported and reaffirmed if we are to continue to enjoy in the future the blessings which they have brought in the past. The time for words and oratory has past. The time for action and deeds is here. On those deeds you and our elected representatives in Congress are being judged today by public opinion in our country, and by both our friends and foes overseas. A copy of this letter is being sent all Senators and Representatives in Congress, and to other organizations of citizens throughout the United States. Respectfully yours. 5th. CITIZENS ASSOCIATION OF ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA WM. H. SPURGEON, JR., President WARNING! Great democracies like ours have existed before in the history of the world, and have disappeared. What has happened before can happen again if public opinion is apathetic, indifferent or selfish. No one person is financially able, sufficiently interested or knows how to take proper ACTION to protect and preserve our system of free enterprise. An ORGANIZATION such as this, however, CAN with active financial assistance of the patriotic business and professional men and women, both employers and employees, in the towns of Orange County GET RESULTS; not only in this county but throughout the state and nation. We need men and women of the fearless type who can envisage our needs and are willing to stand shoulder to shoulder in molding a public opinion strong enough to compel our public servants to render patriotic, public service in defense of our democratic institutions. To wage war against the insidious foes of our Constitution requires an even higher type of patriotism and valor than it takes to face the foe on the field of battle. Volunteers alone, are acceptable for such work, as when volunteers are asked for some hazardous detail at the front. MEN! WOMEN! YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU NOW.
