ANAHEIM GAZETTE Established 1870 ORANGE COUNTY'S OLDEST NEWSPAPER HENRY KUCHEL, Editor and Publisher 1887-1935 The Anaheim Gazette has been owned and edited by the same family since 1875. Published every Thursday at 259 East Center Street, Anaheim, Calif. Subscription Per Year .....$2.00 Six Months .....$1.00 MRS. HENRY KUCHEL THEODORE B. KUCHEL Editors and Publishers Entered as second-class matter at the Post Office at Anaheim, California, under the Act of March 8, 1879. SPEED UP THE TEMPO Business in the nation has shown a tremendous improvement in the first two months of 1941. Increases have been reported of from 12 to 20 percent over the same period in 1940. The lush days of the roaring twenties may soon be reality. Anaheim, too, is showing a healthy surge forward. As yet we have no tremendous boom as some centers near airplane factories have shown. On the other hand when the inevitable reaction, a few years hence, comes we will not suffer so severe a letdown. The conduct of a business is still measured by cause and effect. The first element, cause, is, and always will be in the hands of management. In other words a business will still react to the intelligence, or lack of it, of the operating group. Anaheim, from a business standpoint, has two major problems: First, to recover as large percentage as possible of the money that is being spent out of town; second to develop to the greatest degree the potential business in our trading area. These problems are common to the individual merchant and to the community. If one business man goes ahead and finds even a partial solution to his problem he has, in turn, helped the community solve the same problem. The Gazette has plans along the above lines that are proven to be effective. We will discuss them fully in the near future. FEDERAL FOOD OPERATE IN ORANGE Extension of the federal stamp plan for distribution of plus foods to approximately 60 public assisted households in ange county for the benefit farmers and eligible needy pants was assured late last week when Secretary of Agriculture Claude R. Wickard announced selection of this county for operation of the plan. It is anticipated that the plan will start operating in about month, or as soon as necessary machinery can be set up. Chad F. Kunkel, acting regional director of the Surplus Marketing administration, announced. Based on the corporation's perience in other areas where plan has been operating, Kunkel estimated the plan will provide annually more than $347,107,000 increased purchasing power in area for farm products. This mean an increase of at least much in the annual business of retail food stores in Orange co as the stamp plan provides for tributing surplus commodities through the regular channel trade. Kunkel announced that Ed C. Garwood, area supervisor of Surplus Marketing administration will supervise the installation Operations will be carried on if the Surplus Marketing administration office, 704 S. Spring Los Angeles. Before the food stamp plan gins operating, representative the Surplus Marketing administration will hold a mass meeting retail food merchants. The Gazette has plans along the above lines that are proven to be effective. We will discuss them fully in the near future. Let's build Anaheim. Don Earl Boatman will speak Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the subject, “Joy.” For the evening service between 7 and 8 o’clock he has chosen as his theme, “The Grace of Christ.” CALVARY BAPTIST “The Sin We’re Afraid to Men- Christian Science textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy, are the statements: “Jesus behold in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal men appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Savior saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick. Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy.” “The War’s Strangest Mystery.” Half of the people of Abbeville, France, are missing or dead and nobody knows why, yet some ghostly “Pled Piper” seems to have come to the quaint old Picardy Village with the German hordes to lure the citizens to suicide and destruction. Don’t miss this astonishing double page illustrated feature in The American Weekly, the magazine distributed with next week’s LOS ANGELES EXAMINER.—Adv. YOU'LL SAY FIRST BECAUSE Get ACHEVROLL The Combination Th VALVE IN HEAD SIX CYLINDE CHURCH OF CHRIST Rev. Don Earl Boatman will speak Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the subject, "Joy." For the evening service between 7 and 8 o'clock he has chosen as his theme. "The Grace of Christ." CALVARY BAPTIST "The Sin We're Afraid to Mention," will be the subject of Rev. Earl R. Berg's sermon during the morning service on Sunday. In the evening hour, Dr. Harry Openshaw, for 40 years missionary in West China, will speak on "The Christian Movement in China." He will also speak to the young people at 6:30 p.m. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH "Man" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon on Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist. The Golden Text is from I John: "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." Included in the Lesson-Sermon are these words about Jesus from Luke: "And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God. And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: . . . And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole.'" Among the selections from the FEDERAL FOOD STAMP PLAN WILL OPERATE IN ORANGE COUNTY SOON Extension of the federal food plan for distribution of surplus foods to approximately 6433 assisted households in Orange county for the benefit of farmers and eligible needy participants was assured late last week. Secretary of Agriculture R. Wickard announced action of this county for operation of the plan. It is anticipated that the plan will start operating in about a month, or as soon as necessaryinery can be set up, Charles Kunkel, acting regional director of Surplus Marketing administration, announced. Based on the corporation's existence in other areas where the has been operating, Kunkel estimated the plan will provide nearly more than $347,107.0f in increased purchasing power in this farm products. This will be an increase of at least this amount in the annual business of the food stores in Orange county. The stamp plan provides for dishing surplus commodities through the regular channels of Kunkel announced that Edwin Carwood, area supervisor of the US Marketing administration, supervise the installation.ATIONS will be carried on from Surplus Marketing administration office, 704 S. Spring St., Angeles. Store the food stamp plan be-operating, representatives of Surplus Marketing administra-tion will hold a mass meeting for food merchants. At this purchase of any foods for human consumption in the home, at any participating retail food stores, including grocery stores, bakeries, meat markets and retail dairy outlets. However, they are not good for any alcoholic beverages, tobacco in any form, or for foods normally consumed on the store premises. The blue surplus food stamps are also worth 25 cents each in trade in these stores, but are good only for foods currently designated as being "in surplus" by the U.S. department of agriculture and so listed in the areas where the plan is operating. The additional food obtained with the free blue surplus food stamps figures at least $2 a person per month. The requirement that, in order to take part in the plan, orange food-order stamps must be purchased in an amount equal to former food purchases, protects the farmers by insuring that foods obtained free are in addition to, and not in place of, food formerly purchased by eligibles. Eligible participants will receive, by letter, full instructions as to how they may buy food order stamps. At an early date the location of stamp issuing offices will be announced. All retail food merchants who wish to take part in the food stamp plan when it opens in this area must first register with the Surplus Marketing administration office in Los Angeles. Conservation Plan Advances in County Local orchardists and vineyardists may still perform erosion control measures under the 1941 Agricultural Conservation program. These measures include the planting of permanent cover crops in irrigated orchards or vineyards; changing from methods of irrigation which cause soil erosion to a system of contour irrigation, and planting of fruit and nut trees on the contour. Each of these practices requires prior approval of the county committee. Nearly 4000 operators have declared their intention to participate in the 1941 program by signing a farm plan. Those who have not signed should contact B. F. Karcher, 411 N. Lemon St., Anaheim committeeman, or call at the county office, 622 N. Main St., Santa Ana.
