Knott's Defeat Kiwanis Bowlers
Gene Gough in Top Form with Scores of 246 and 608
Gene Gough, operator of the Anaheim Bowling center and member of the Kiwanis club team in the Service Club league, was in top form Thursday, rolling a single game of 246 and a series of 608. His efforts weren't enough, however, as Kiwanis bowed to Knott's Berry Place, 3 to 1. Elks club trimmed I.O.O.F. by the same score and K's Beverages blanked 20-30 club, 4 to 0. The box scores:

SPORTOPIX
Observed by Russ McComb
Two jaysee basketball games of importance will be played this week end, both of which will have a decided bearing upon the championship playoff which will probably start next week.
Tomorrow night, Chaffey and Riverside tangle at Chaffey in a battle which will decide Fullerton's opponent in the title series. Saturday night, in Santa Ana's Andrews gym, the Hornets and the Dons will tangle in their annual battle.
Chaffey's Panthers are the pre-game favorites to defeat the Riverside Tigers and qualify as the last team standing in the way of Fullerton's fifth consecutive conference cage championship. Coach Muggs Mitchell's crew is on a par with Fullerton as an offensive team, having tossed in an average of more than 55 points a game. Chaffey also has the league's leading scorer in Vane Oliner, lanky center, although he will probably be closely pressed by Cas Breuer, Riverside's brilliant shooter who is third in the conference standings.
The Hornets, naturally, rate the edge over Coach John Ward's Santa Anas, but their margin will be cut somewhat by the advantage the Dons will have through playing on their own floor. One thing is virtually certain, and that is the contest will be a high-scoring one. The Dons have an offensive record of almost 52 points per game and are practically a cinch to score 40 points against the Hornets. It is unlikely, however,

Newport Harbor, by def Fullerton Friday, captured league championship by winning all games. Orange, defeated by Coach Ralph Reed's Tarsin in second place.
In the preliminary game Friday, the Anaheim Bees edged out by the Oiler weights, 28 to 27, after many game comeback from a slow run. The Colonist varsity app headed for a surprise win when they led the Oilers at one stage of the game. Ington Beach wasn't to be considered however, and staged a wild victory in the second half that brought victory.
Newport Harbor added the D championship to that of varsity. Class B. title was won Jordan, while Fullerton captained the Class C crown.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH
"It is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure." This verse from Philippians is the Golden Text in the Lesson-Sermon on "Mind" on Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist.
A Bible selection presents these words of Jesus from Matthew; "Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on as an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
Selections from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, state: "Let us watch, work, and pray that this salt lose not its saltness, and that this light be not hid, but radiate and glow into noontide glory." "Light is a symbol of Mind, of Life, Truth, and Love and not a vitalizing property of matter. Science reveals only one Mind, and this one shining by its own light and governing the universe, including man, in perfect harmony."
It is unlikely, however, that Capt. Bryon Austin and his Hornets will be halted with less than 45 to 50 points.
The Santa Ana-Fullerton contest is something of a freshman-sophomore battle, in that the Dons have only one two-year man, Capt. Hal Lilley, on the starting five, while the Hornets are all sophomores except Olie Mathis, brilliant forward.
The Dons were eliminated from any possibility of getting into the playoff when Riverside nosed them out 47 to 46 last Friday night. On the same evening, the Hornets were running wild to trounce Pomona, 65 to 42.
Fullerton will be shooting the works for a victory over the Dons because that would give the Hornets a one-game margin in the playoff series. Should Santa Ana upset Fullerton, the Hornets would go into the series on an even basis with their opponents. This situation arises over one of the conference's rulings that gives the first place team, if undefeated, credit in the playoffs for the victory scored over the runner-up in regular conference play.
No date has been set for the big series, but it is likely to be played next week, with Fullerton playing the first game away from home.

Anaheim High School Cagers Conclude Year in Fourth Place
Coach Dick Ryan's Anaheim high school cagers closed a highly successful season Friday night by losing to the strong Huntton Beach five, 28 to 24. The cagers split even in their six onset league contests and wound in fourth place.
Newport Harbor, by defeating Allerton Friday, captured the league championship by winning games. Orange, defeated only Coach Ralph Reed’s Tars, were second place.
In the preliminary game last day, the Anaheim Bees were tied out by the Oiler lightnings, 28 to 27, after making a one comeback from a slow start. The Colonist varsity appeared added for a surprise victory when they led the Oilers 16 to 6 on one stage of the game. Huntton Beach wasn’t to be denied, ever, and staged a wild rally the second half that brought glory.
Newport Harbor added the Class Championship to that of the city. Class B. title was won by Dan, while Fullerton captured Class C crown.

Anaheim Resident Gets Prison Term
Frank Warden Sentenced After Too Many Violations of Probation
Because he got drunk and violated his terms of probation once too often, Frank Warden, 26, of Anaheim is now headed for a term in San Quentin prison. Sentence was pronounced last Friday by Superior Judge Kenneth E. Morrison.
Warden’s present troubles started April 18, 1939, when he was arrested for drunk driving following an accident in which two Fullerton men, Alvin G. Beatty and Bob Murphy, were injured. He was granted probation at that time by the then Judge James J. Allen. Four subsequent arrests for drunkenness were leniently dealt with, but the fifth arrest, on Feb. 9 of this year, proved too much for authorities to take. At the request of county probation officers, Judge Morrison revoked probation and sentenced Warden to prison.
