Anaheim Bowlers Hold League Lead Cone Bros. and Oyster Loaf Teams Top County Loop Cone Bros. and Oyster Loaf cafe pulled farther ahead of the field in the Orange County bowling league last Friday night by taking three games each from Marquis cafe of Santa Ana and Laguna Recreation, respectively. In the women's division of the league Fluorescent Lighting won four games from Lido theater. Bob Rundstrom's game of 236 was high for the evening and Leo Maley had a series score of 597 to take honors there. The box scores: CONE BROS. Santa Ana, winner over Pomona last week by 67 to 38, share second place with Chaffey and Riverside, each team having won twice in three starts. Citrus has bowed twice, to Chaffey and Riverside, but trimmed San Bernardino last week end. The fact that the Owls lost to Chaffey by four points and Riverside by five indicates they are a strong club, one that is likely to grab the nod over the Dons. A most unusual situation exists this week in the conference. Five teams, each having played half their conference schedules, have an offensive average of better than 53 points a game. Likewise, the best average defensive record of the quintet is a potent 42 points. Such is the attacking strength of the conference. Santa Ana tops the five teams with a record of scoring 168 points followed by Chaffey with a fullerton with 164, and Riverside and Citrus with 158. The Horn defensive record of 126 is the best, Chaffey's is only 128, Na's is 143, and Riverside's Citrus both have 152. On the basis of these figures is a bit difficult to forecast ultimate winner. Fullerton, victories over Chaffey and Riverside, obviously has the edge and present, but faces the prospect meeting Santa Ana and Citrus foreign courts. Santa Ana faces Riverside, Citrus and Fulton, and has already lost to Citrus. The Dons' prospects are bright. Chaffey has beaten O and Santa Ana and lost to Fulton, which leaves only Riverside to hurdle to get in to the playoffs defeated by Fullerton, must meet both Chaffey and Santa Ana. It's a tough assignment, but Tigers may be able to fill it. All of which seems to add to the present time to a playoff between Fullerton and O Chaffey or Riverside, with Santa Ana having an outside chance. TO PLAY FOR ANNUAL MILITARY BALL FEB. 24 An announcement of interest to all dancers and music lovers of Orange county, comes from J. Riley Huber, chairman of the music committee of the thirteenth annual Disabled American Veterans Military Ball, with the singing of the contract with Rudolf Friml, jr., and his orchestra to play for the event which will be held at the beautiful Memorial hall in Huntington Beach Monday, February 24. Rudolf Friml, jr. is the son the illustrious composer who wrote such world-renowned music as "The Vagabond King," "Rose Marie," "The Firefly" and "The Three Musketeers." As a pupil of his father, young Friml is a thoroughly educated musician with a profound knowledge of both classics and popular music. Friml, jr. has created many brilliant and unusual arrangements of his father's music which he alone has the privilege of playing since this music has been restricted from general use. Friml, jr. is 26 years of age. He was born and raised in Los Angeles, attended the public schools there, and graduated from the University of Southern California. His father taught him music, and he was an accomplished pianist before he graduated from grade school. During his stay at the University of Southern California, he turned to the study of musical theory and composition and has composed several works for the piano and orchestra. Rather than attempt to trade on his famous father's name, young Friml organized his own orchestra and started from the very bottom. Two years of extremely hard work, none too prosperous, found him with a well organized and extremely pleasing musical unit. Friml was featured during the summer of 1939 at such renowned places as the Million Dollar pier, Atlantic City, Brighton Beach, N.Y. and Enna Jettick park, Auburn N.Y. He also played many successful ballroom and park dates. Gasoline Tax Money Allotted to County An apportionment of $96,631.42 in gasoline funds for Orange county was announced this week by State Controller Harry B. Riley. The money represented this county's share of gasoline tax revenue collected in the last quarter of 1940. The apportionment was based on a motor vehicle registration of 64,155. Deduction from the allotment was $86,462.91, representing repayment of unemployment relief loans made by the state. This left a net to Orange county of $10,-168.51. At the leading dance spots in the east. He has just finished coast engagements at Los Angeles Biltmore bowl and the El Cortez hotel in San Diego. Tickets for the annual ball are now on sale in every Orange county community.
