Book Reviewed • For Bible Section
"The Nazarene," by Sholem-Asch, was the subject of discussion and reviews when the Bible section of the Ebell met Monday afternoon.
Mrs. Albert Raymond presented the first part of the well-known book and aptly described the dramatic and stirring narrative. Mrs. H. D. Newkirk reported on the second part, as seen through the eyes of Judas. Mrs. D. Jerry Youngs reviewed the final and most enthralling section of the great work.
Mrs. Robert Baker, accompanied by Mrs. Stanley Frederick George, sang two spiritual songs. Mrs. W. M. Kelsey gave an especially beautiful reading of the 27th Psalm.
Mrs. Howard Watts, Mrs. Dora Pearson and Mrs. Lulu McFaul were tea-hour hostesses.
Robert Marvin Celebrates Birthday
Robert Marvin, jr., celebrated his 18th birthday last night with an informal party given at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Marvin of 211 South Illinois street.
A delightful 6 o'clock dinner was served by Mrs. Marvih, after which the group of high school classmates attended the theater. Those present were H. L. Looney, John Harpster, Paul McCleister, Bud Mahoney, Joe Wollenman, Jim Gessler, Bill Lewis, Bob Whittemore and Jack Planting.
South Seas Films Shown to Ionian Section of Ebell
The South Seas was the pictorial destination taken Tuesday evening by the Ionian section members of the Junior Ebell when T. H. Glenn and J. A. Smith of the Santa Ana travel bureau entertained with a talk and motion pictures at the clubhouse.
Miss Dorothy Jester, leader of the group, opened the meeting with several business announcements. A delicious dessert course was served at the beginning of the program, with Mrs. Dick Heffern, Miss Phyllis Corcoran and Miss Isabell Bruington assisting in hostess duties. The table was striking with its clever arrangement of cherry blossoms and narcissus flanked by pastel-hued candles. White pottery completes the early spring motif.
Mr. Glen held the Ionian members spellbound while he took them through the romance of the South Seas. "Hawaii lives up to all its extravagant praises," said Mr Glenn, describing a cruise taken during last summer. "Pago-Pago's harbor is, without question, one of the most beautiful in the world. Fiji island is, of course, remarkable for the native inhabitants' custom of wearing their wooly hair combed into a thick, upright mat. Australia is the home of the koala bear, the kangroo and the eucalyptus tree. It is full of rich promise, is Australia, with its huge acreage and small population. Hawaii is somewhat disappointing, largely because of the intermingling of the races and the subsequent let-down of inherited qualities."
The motion pictures shown were lovely in color. Especially interesting to the guests was the gorgeous flower, the hibiscus, in rich, deep colors.
During the program, Cortez
Miss Ruth Rockwell Honored at Dinner
Miss Ruth Rockwell was honored last night upon the occasion of her birthday when her sister, Mrs. C. Barthelmes, entertained at her home with a dinner.
A delicious chicken dinner was served, and a beautiful birthday cake presented to the honored guest. Those sharing the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. Barthelmes, Vernon Rockwell, Nancy and Jimmy Barthelmes and Miss Rockwell.
Man Arrested for License Violation
J. C. Clary, arrested yesterday on a warrant charging him with repairing a roof under contract without first having obtained a contractor's license or building permit, is at liberty under bail pending his appearance in Anaheim city court January 27.
Bette Richardson Weds Floyd Dunham
Bette Richardson, formerly of Anaheim, was married Saturday to Floyd Dunham of Santa Ana at Las Vegas in a quiet ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Richardson of Harbor boulevard and Mr. Dunham is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Dunham of Santa Ana.
Attending the rites were Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Lewellyn (Beverly Johnson) of Fullerton. The bride was dressed in a soldier blue suit, set off by accessories of red earth.
The bride and groom are residing at 727 Salem street, Pacific Beach. The new Mrs. Dunham is a graduate of Anaheim union high school, class of 1936, and has been employed at the Betty Maid shop in Santa Ana.
