Flight Training Courses Offered Classes at Santa Ana Jaysee to Start February 10 in Two Divisions Preliminary and advanced flight training was offered to Orange county men between the ages of 19 and 26 today as Flight Instructor H. O. Russell of Santa Ana junior college pushed registrations to fill the jaysee's recommended quota for next semester of 40 primary and 20 secondary civilian pilot training students. The college recently completed training of 39 private pilots, bringing to -129 the total number of jaysee pilots trained through the CAA program since the courses were inaugurated last year. Advanced training will be offered at Santa Ana for the first time next semester. Applications for registration are currently being accepted in the flight office on the jaysee campus, Tenth and Main streets, Santa Ana. Courses will get underway on Feb. 1 and terminate not later than June 30, it was stated. Ground and flight training in the preliminary course include 72 hours of instruction in civil air regulations, navigation, and meteorology, and 18 hours of aircraft operation in addition to 35 to 50 hours of actual flying time, Russell said. The complete course offers eight units of college credit. The secondary training gives 40 to 50 hours additional hours of flying time in airplanes from 125 Fremont P.-T. A. Plans were made to inaugurate the "march of dimes" drive. Mrs. Everett Wood, program chairman, introduced several students who gave various numbers as a part of the entertainment portion of the meeting. They were Wilma Fledderman, Doris Essary, Marion Merrill, Janet Power, Glen Greder and James Friis. A panel discussion was held by Walter Phillips, Leonard Knarreborg, Mrs. Everett Wood, Mrs. R. H. From nine to 10 units of credit will be awarded for completion of these courses. Flight instruction will be undertaken at the Eddie Martin airport south of Santa Ana, utilizing the school's seven 45-horsepower Piper Cub Trainers recently ordered from the Los Angeles factory for advanced fliers, it was indicated. Due to the high educational and physical requirements the instructor voiced a belief that all students who can pass the examinations will be accepted for training. Requirements are listed as follows: For preliminary flight applicants must be American citizens between the ages of 19 and 26, and not hold a pilot certificate of private grade or higher. Students regularly enrolled in college must have completed at least 24 units of undergraduate work, while those not attending college must have completed 48 units to be eligible for enrollment. Secondary flight applicants must be graduates of the preliminary course and have not less than 45 units of college work. Cost to trainees will be $15 for preliminary students, which covers insurance and physical examinations, and $36 for advanced trainees to cover cost of helmet and goggles in addition to the other requisites. County Opposes Breakwater Plan Fearing ill effect upon the Orange county shoreline from the proposed four-mile extension of the Long Beach-Los Angeles harbor breakwater, the county supervisors unanimously voted this week to request investigation by the U. S. Shore Protective board. The vote was based on a petition from City Engineer Russell L. Patterson of Newport Beach who asserted that breakwater stips create areas of "dead water" which halt the downshore littoral drift of san which builds up the beaches. Just now, with the beach badly torn and washed by recent bounding storms, particularly a Sunset Beach and Seal Beach so rarely in need of rebuilding by this natural process of drift, Engineer Patterson pointed out. The federal government's project of extending the Los Angeles Long Beach harbor breakwater to a point opposite the mouth of San Gabriel river means additional problems for this county, said Patterson. It means, he said, that local beaches must be built up by artificial means, which would require pumping of sands for a considerable distance.
