He was arrested early in morning. Folk songs were developed and sung by bards or troubadors who, while traveling from place to place, used a dogeral form to repeat news gathered on the way—as time passed, these grew in some cases into classics which we have all known and enjoyed. During this time, the sacred mass came into being and to Palestrina is given the credit due for our present day enjoyment of the a capella choir music; his compositions being used today by all outstanding musical groups throughout the world. The mystery play—depicting various scenes in the life of the Christ, as well as the Saints, became a forerunner of what developed into our oratorio and opera music of today. Music in its earlier form was like the times, extremely primitive and instrumental music limited to the invention of the printing press brought to the world a sense of culture to replace wars and to Martin Luther and his hymns we owe a great deal of the congregational singing of today. "A Mighty Fortress is our God" shows the height of this form. KANSAS PICNIC Kansas Association of Southern California will hold its annual winter picnic reunion all day Wednesday, January 29, in Sycamore Grove park, Los Angeles. A program of music and addresses will follow the picnic dinner. flute, reeds and lute, and vocal music, except for solo was of course unheard of, as melody was simply chanted by groups of singers with unaccented modification of any kind. What would they think, I wonder, if they could hear our singing groups of today; our opera and orchestration. We have indeed come a long way. The invention of the printing press brought to the world a sense of culture to replace wars and to Martin Luther and his hymns we owe a great deal of the congregational singing of today. "A Mighty Fortress is our God" shows the height of this form. CHAS: KUCHEL, Justice of the Pea of Said Township, Jan. 16, 23, 30; Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27; March 6, 1941.
