Nation’s Culture Depends on Women, Speaker Declares
“The culture of the United States depends upon the women,” said Dr. Carter Davison Monday in his address to members of the Ebell club when they met Monday at the clubhouse. Dr. Davison is president of Knox college in Illinois.
“Education has undergone a radical change in the last 50 years,” declared the well known lecturer. “From the emphasis on grammar, logic and rhetoric, education has changed to study of the individual.”
Monday’s meeting began with a delicious luncheon in charge of Mrs. E. P. Hapgood and Mrs. Louis H. Hoskins. Serving were women whose names began with H, J, and K. The table was prettily appointed with seasonal floral centers arranged by Miss Helen Jefferay, Mrs. Ben Heying and Mrs. M. M. Henderson.
An interesting feature of the meeting was the art exhibit arranged by the southern district federation of Art Traveling Exhibits. Several well known paintings were among those presented. The stage was centered with an illuminated portrait of Raphael's Madonna.
Gold stars against a deep red background, calla lilies and acasias formed the stage setting arranged by Mrs. Melvin Hilgenfeld and Mrs. Harold Smith. Mrs. D. Jerry Youngs, president, opened the business meeting, at which several club sections announced their meeting dates. One particularly important announcement was made when Mrs. R. W. Dickenson said that Red Cross work

R. W. Dickenson said that Red Cross work would continue on Tuesday. A new shipment of goods has arrived and all sewing work must be finished by January 31. A call for more helpers was made.

Mrs. Albert Raymond introduced Dr. Davison, the guests speaker. He stressed the method of modern education with four main points; purpose, plan, experiment and evaluation. Survey courses were useless, Dr. Davison declared. "Survey courses are like a hoop skirt—it covers everything but touches nothing." He traced the history of education from Aristotle, who changed the course of learning from the experiment method to the cold logic. Thomas Aquinnas was responsible for the next major step in that he used logic with theorem. Grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, music and astromony were the full range of education until 50 years ago, said Dr. Davison.
The main outward things a student needs are experience, experiments, expression and exercise. The inward things are enjoyment, interpretation and inspiration. Youth in the present day has a dangerous tendency to lack inspiration, the speaker said. He compared a well educated student to a new car, complete with turret-top, chrome trim, beautiful dashboard and horn but without a battery with which to generate a spark.
Dr. Davison concluded his talk with the statement that democracy can be sustained only by religion, education and inspiration. Truth both are complimenting Anaheim.
