Judge Charles Kuchel Reviews Several Interesting Facts About Early Anaheim Justice Court Jurist Recalls Historical Events in City Judge Charles Kuchel of the Anaheim justice court was born in Anaheim and spent his entire life here. His knowledge of the city is surpassed by very few people, gained not only from his many years of residence here but also from the close contacts he had had with The Gazette from the time it was purchased by his brother, the late Henry Kuchel, down to the present time. Therefore, his brief history of Anaheim, written especially for this edition, is authoritative and of interest. Judge Kuchel's story follows: "Looking back to the days of long ago, in 1857 there were 50 German-Prussian men (who had become naturalized American citizens) living with their families in San Francisco. They worked at various trades, but had one common desire—to create a home in southern California. "As a result, they sent George Hansen, an engineer, to this section to pick out a location. After three years of investigation he decided upon this site, where Anaheim is now located, for a colony. One thousand acres were reclaimed from the desert and wilderness and made to blossom as the rose. After three years of investigation he decided upon this site, where Anaheim is now located, for a colony. One thousand acres were reclaimed from the desert and wilderness and made to blossom as the rose. The tract was laid out in fifty 20-acre lots, which were devoted to the raising of grapes. In 1860 the Pioneers came here with their families to create what was termed the Mother Colony. A thick willow hedge was planted around each 20-acre tract, and water was derived from the Santa Ana river for irrigation. The willows grew to form a continuous hedge around the entire colony. The Pioneers worked hard and built comfortable homes for their families. They raised grapes and made wine of good quality, some of which in later years was shipped to Europe. There were only two streets laid out, Los Angeles and Center streets. Freight and merchandise were shipped here by boat from San Francisco, by way of the old Anaheim Landing (now Seal Beach) which became a busy section. The freight was hauled here by 12-house teams in large wagons, and some was hauled on to San Bernardino, then known as the key city to southern California from the east. "The Pioneers continued to be prosperous for many years. In 1875 the Southern Pacific railroad was built here from Los Angeles, Anaheim being the terminus for many years. Passengers from the Southern Pacific depot were carried by stage coach to the old Planters hotel; those going to Santa Ana (just a small country village at that time) were taken by a two-horse spring wagon to the old Lehman hotel, at the corner of Fourth and Main streets. The town grew and the Pioneers were just one big happy family. "The town derived its name 'Anaheim' from a conjunction of two words, 'Ana,' taken from the Santa Ana river, and 'heim', a German word meaning 'home'—a Home on the River." Things continued in a prosperous way until 1885, when a disease told about in the adjoining article by Justice of the Peace Cukhel. Store Fine Institution Schumacher and Renner Have Been Partners Since Concern Founded Back in 1907, two young men who had spent most of their childhood in Anaheim joined hands in embarking upon a business adventure in the then small town of Anaheim Today, 33 years later, August E. Schumacher and Oscar H. Renner are still doing business as partners in the operation of The S. Q. R. Store. The S. Q. R. Store actually had its beginning back in 1883 when Samuel Federman came to Anaheim and conducted a store in the Kroeger building in the center of the first block on West Center street, and on the south side. In 1888 he erected his own building on the northeast corner of Center and Los Angeles streets, conducting his business at that location until selling cut to Schumacher and Renner in 1907: Renner himself, had been employed by Federman in 1892 and remained with the concern until he and his young partner purchased the business. The new firm enjoyed immediate prosperity and has grown until now, after 33 years, The S. Q. R. Store is one of the leading department stores in Orange county. In 1913, The S. Q. R. Store removed to the new Dreyfus building on the southwest corner of Center and Los Angeles streets. There the proprietors opened with a new stock of goods, carrying TWENTY-THIRTY CLUB IS SERVING ORGANIZATION FOR YOUNGER The service organization for young men, the 20-30 club, was organized in Anaheim on March 4, 1930, with 21 charter members. The first meeting was held at the Elks clubhouse, with H. E. W. Barnes, Anaheim business man, as speaker, his subject being, "What a service club can mean to its members." The charter members of the Anaheim 20-30 club were Jack Gledhill, Clint Griggs, Tommy Kemp, Wayne Lauderbach, Bill Campbell, Arch Henry, M. F. Spencer, Louis Hennig John Henry, Art Jensen, Earle Jackson, Ray LaFont, Francis Elliott, Ted Clausen, Gene Toelle, Marion Forte, Dr. H. F. Stahler, David Wagner, Arthur Wilmsen, Carol Wollenman and Vance Ford. Two weeks after the first meeting, the group elected its first officers, with Gledhill being chosen as president. The charter was a tremendous change in the 33 years of the store's existence. Window trimming was not the fine art that it is today. Among the early-day memories of Schumacher and Renner are the town clock and bell tower striking the hour, the safety bicycle and the bicycle built-for-two, the huge arch over Center and Los Angeles streets for July 4 celebrations, and the burning of the famous old Planter hotel. The store has kept pace with the growth of the city and surrounding territory. Sugar Factory Was Unsuccessful Here For some years in the 80's, sugar plant raising was one of the main industries in the area around Anaheim. Many residents of the city invested money in a factory which was built north of town. The venture was unsuccessful, however, and much money was lost. Led phyllosera destroyed every map vine here within two years. That was a terrible blow to the onesers. Just about this time the Santa Railway was built from Kansas City to Los Angeles, and on to its city and San Diego. It created a land boom and many of the acre tracts here were subdivided into town lots. Things along it line went humming for several years, but in 1889 the land from collapsed, causing a panic. Other oranges and all kinds of other fruits were raised, and the community grew into what you now see today." The new firm enjoyed immediate prosperity and has grown until now, after 33 years, The S. Q. R. Store is one of the leading department stores in Orange county. In 1913, The S. Q. R. Store removed to the new Dreyfus building on the southwest corner of Center and Los Angeles streets. There the proprietors opened with a new stock of goods, carrying substantially the same lines of goods that they still sell. In early days the young merchants found it necessary to speak German and Spanish in order to accommodate patrons from all sections of the county and they both became proficient in these languages. Anaheim was then, now, the favorite trading town in northern Orange county and customers came from Buena Park, Westminster, Garden Grove, Placentia, Yorba and other nearby settlements. When The S. Q. R. Store was young, goods were purchased twice a year. There were the "spring" and summer and "fall and winter" seasons. Large shipments came by freight twice a year from Chicago and St. Louis. Advertising and display of goods have undergone art that it is today. Beginning in 1907 with five employees, there are now 48 men and women employed in this up-to-date department store. Then, in the "horse and buggy days" the trade radius was eight miles; now with fast automobiles it is 23. Schumacher and Renner both came to Anaheim with their respective families in 1887, the former from Texas and the later from Michigan, and started working in stores at the age of 14 years. They were dealing in dry goods in the "gay nineties" and can tell you all about the "mauve decade." They have seen Anaheim grow from a village of 1200 population to its present size of about 12,000 inhabitants. The trade territory in the meantime has expanded from 2,000 to 35,000 persons. O. H. Early-day Murder Stirred Community In the early eighties, Anaheim residents were shocked by the murder of Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock, residents of Garden Grove, who had been slain by a man named Angslang. He had secured a deed to their ranch property through trickery, and then murdered the couple. Angslang was arrested and convicted of murder in Los Angeles county. He cheated the gallows by taking his own life in his cell. The arrest was made by the late Fred Smythe, who was city marshal here. Smythe outwitted a mob who sought to linch the killer. Mankind will be God-governed in proportion as God's government becomes apparent, the Golden Rule utilized, and the rights of man and the liberty of conscience held sacred. —Mary Baker Eddy. Gun Duel Makes Interesting Yarn An interesting story of old Anaheim is that which deals with the duel between Manuel Reyes and Santos Carrisosa, rival heads of sheep-shearing gangs. The duel was the result of a challenge issued by Reyes to Carrisosa, with pistols to be the weapons. Reyes did it more in a friendly way and had blank cartridges in his revolver when he pulled his gun. Of course, Santos did not know that, and he drew his pistol and kept Manuel dancing the jitterbug to evade the bullets that flew his way. Friends finally interceded and stopped the frolic. Afterwards, both men were the best of friends, after many years of enmity. Some of Brazil's landed gentry own estates which are larger than the British Isles. Back in the years before the turn of the twentieth century, Fourth of July was a big day in the life of Anaheim residents. Annually, a gigantic celebration was held in which everybody in the city participated. The above picture shows a scene at one of those celebrations, although the exact year which photograph was taken is not known. The tall arch, which was placed at the intersection of Los Angeles and Center streets, was one of the features of the Independence Day festivals. Among the crowd can be seen the band, of which Anaheim was justly proud in those days. 1940 Store Service Co.
