Sheriff’s Deputy Dies in Accident
Uncle of Stanley’s Widow is Victim of Fatal Crash 12 Hour Earlier

restrained Pryorfi when he apparently planned further attempts to brave the flames. Two Huntington Beach youths, R. J. Underwood and Melvin Hanson, took part in a futile rescue attempt shortly after the car burst into flames.
Before Pryor was taken to the hospital, he arrested Dolan on triple counts of negligent homicide, drunk driving and drunk. Dolan was taken to the Orange county hospital with chest injuries, cuts and bruises. His three passengers, William Foust, Miss Ina Clark and Miss Ruby Lindsay, all of Huntington Beach, were treated by a physician for cuts and bruises.
Wickersheim met his death when a northbound freight train struck his machine at the First street crossing in Santa Ana. He apparently drove directly into the path of the switch engine and his car was carried 84 feet and struck two trucks and a passenger car which were waiting for the locomotive to pass. Wickersheim was thrown from his car and apparently met instant death.
None Injured When Two Autos Collide
No one was hurt in a collision of two automobiles at the intersection of Palm and Water streets at midnight Saturday, according to Anaheim police reports. Cars involved in the crash were driven by Walter Carolyn Lee, Paramount film player, licks an app finger at a sample of the new fall crop of honey. Mrs. Schutz Hostess To Auxiliary Group
Mrs. Charles Schutz was hostess Tuesday evening to members of the auxiliary to the Presbyterian church at her home on North Zeyn street, with Mrs. Mary Kelsay, Mrs. Auburn Walker and Miss Doris Hawley as co-hostesses.
During the business session, plans were made for the Thanksgiving food donations distributed today.
During the afternoon, moving pictures of Alaska were shown. Mrs. Lloyd Ross gave a short Thanksgiving story.
The next meeting of the auxiliary will be held December 16 at the home of Mrs. Jessie Steward of Liberty Lane. Donations of toys to be given to the children's homes will be asked. All donations will be taken by Mrs. Robert Baker, 900 North Clementine.

“Well, this is Tuesday. I had to take cover last night. They never moved from overhead. We had four hours in the shelter... came out at 1:10 a.m. Had just got into bed when the awful wailing of the sirens started again, so Ivor and I went into the cellar for a while. There are quite a lot of people sleep in their shelters and others have beds in the cellar. It saves them having to get up in the night. When we go to bed we never get undressed for we have been awakened by bombs dropping, and anti-aircraft guns have very nearly thrown us out of bed. The whole place seems to be rocking when the guns start and shells burst overhead.
“Well, aunt, I must close now. Since I started writing tonight the pests have been over. Mother sent me the dollar which I gave the Red Cross representative at work and they are very grateful for it. I have seen the American ambulances here for the Red Cross.
“It is a great comfort to us here to know that we have the sympathy of the Americans and the help they are giving us. England is not alone with such a friend at the back of us. All the lads of our Empire here are with us, as well as Polish and other soldiers of the countries that have fallen for the Open-House Held For Newlyweds
Mr. and Mrs. LaMonte Webb of 520 North Olive street held open-house Sunday to honor their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Webb, here on their honeymoon.
Fifty guests joined in wishing the newly-weds good luck. The new Mrs. Webb is the former Arnetta Carr of Rock Springs, Wyo. The couple were married November 12 and are visiting Anaheim enroute to Washington, D.C., where they will live.
A three-tiered wedding cake highlighted the occasion, and Mrs. John Bouas and Mrs. John Clark assisted in hostess duties. Autumn colors were prevalent about the room, and tall tapers shed a soft glow. The new Mr. and Mrs. Webb will leave tomorrow (Friday).

Santa Ana Man Arrest Result of Investigation by Bank Teller
Possibility of a terminal penitentiary is faced by Fred L. Barnhill, 40, of Parton street, Santa Ana, result of his alleged acid stealing letters from him on an Orange rural farm forging checks which he hid in the thefts. According to Santa Ana, Barnhill employed truck driver, a written confession of theft.
Barnhill was taken in last Friday when he sent Santa Ana police. Later he was arranged by Edgar Miller, tells Commercial National Santa Ana, police said, is said to have cashed three checks stolen at least one of which was by Miller. He determined the man to justice, and the entire rural mail robbing Barnhill had been acting to practically all residents and asking that the police any stranger be reported.

Mrs. Bertha McCracken of Santa Ana, well-known club woman and lecturer, reviewed several new books including "Diplomatically Speaking," by Griscom, "Indian Summer," by Van Wick Brooks, "To Whom the Bells Tolled," by E. Hemingway, "Mrs. Miniver," by Struther, "Mrs. Littlejohn," by Glaven, and "Pacific Ocean," by Dan Loon. Mrs. McCracken also gave a talk on her recent eastern trip.
The next meeting will be a study session held at the home of Mrs. H. G. Harling, 401 North Janss, December 3, at 9:30 o'clock in the morning.

Garden Club Meets At Seitz Residence
Mrs. Nellie Seitz was hostess Friday afternoon to the Anaheim Garden club at her home in Orangewood avenue, with Mrs. George Greder and Mrs. Gene Frantz as co-hostesses.
During the session, it was decided to send potted plants to Anaheim shut-ins during the holidays. Mrs. Greder, chairman of the float committee, presented Mrs. Frantz, president of the club, the cup and ribbon awarded the garden club float, which took third place in the recent Hallowe'en parade.
Murray Charles McNeil and Gorden Baker Lloyd of Los Angeles were guest speakers of the afternoon. The topic for the afternoon was care of the lawn and garden. Mrs. Marian Hill entertained with two piano selections.
Mrs. A. L. Turner Feted on Birthday
Mrs. A. L. Turner was guest of honor Sunday at a surprise birthday dinner given at her home, 733 North Olive street, by Mrs. W. R. Turner of Tustin and Mrs. C. M. Cherry.
Feting Mrs. Turner were Mr. and Mrs. Noah Sagraves, Irvine; Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Lawrence and daughter, Joan, of Tustin; Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Turner, Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Cherry and son, Vernon Dee and daughters, La Fern and Rella, and A. L. Turner and small daughter, Shirley Ann.

Russell G. Kokx
Called by Death
Russell G. Kokx, 34, of 206 East La Palma street died last Tuesday evening at his home. A native of Michigan, he had resided in Anaheim for the past five years.
Kokx is survived by his wife, Jessie; two children, Russell and Harlow, all of Anaheim; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kokx; two brothers, Lawrence and Ray, and three sisters, Mrs. Lanie Kozina, Mrs. Marta Stinson and Miss Elsie Koks, all of Villa Park.
There will be a recitation of the holy rosary at the Backs, Campbell & Kaulbars chapel tomorrow evening at 7:30 o'clock. Mass will be aid at St. Boniface Church Saturday morning at 9 o'clock and burial will be made in Holy Sepulchre cemetery.
