Disqualification of Cowen came as the result of his losing his own party's nomination to Collins. Sections 2893 and 2894 of the state elections code provides that where a candidate is disqualified because of his failure to secure his own party's nomination the newly-elected county central committee of the party where the vacancy occurs may fill the vacancy by filing a nominating paper for the office at least 35 days before the November election. Section 2634 of the Elections code provides: "A candidate whose name has been on the ballot as a candidate of a party at the direct primary and who has been defeated for that party nomination, is ineligible for nomination as an independent candidate. He is also ineligible as a candidate named by a party central committee to fill a vacancy on the ballot for general election." Therefore both Peter H. Funk and D. C. Cowles are eliminated from the assembly race along with Gowen. with Gowen as the state supreme court has ruled that the above section pertains to situations of this type. Sheppard's large margin in San Bernardino county and lesser lead in Riverside county far surpassed the margin which West built up in Orange county, where he lead the congressman by 637 votes, the vote being West 8842 and Sheppard 8205. Throughout the district, with 58 precincts in San Bernardino county still unreported, Sheppard polled 26,315 votes to 20,515 for West. Run-off Necessary Baker and Riley must renew their contest in the November election because David T. Beat and George Candee polled enough votes to prohibit the leader from obtaining a majority. The final tally throughout the third district was Baker, 5486; Beat, 843; Candee, 433, and Riley, 5371. Anaheim also gave Baker a slight lead over the incumbent supervisor, voting 1598 to 1542. Collins finished with a comfortable lead over Gowen in the race for the Republican nomination for assemblyman, garnering 4210 votes to his opponent's 3420. On the Democratic slate, Gowen received 3786 votes, to 2284 for Peter H. Funk of Anaheim and 1136 for Danforth C. Cowles of Fullerton. That at least one change will be made in the personnel of the Orange county board of supervisors was assured when Fred C. Rowland, mayor of Santa Ana, received a majority over the combined vote of his two opponents, Supervisor Steele Finley and Walter Robb. This contest was in the first supervisorial district. Rowland will take office January 1. Lydia L. Robinson Called by Death Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from Winbigler chapel in Santa Ana for Mrs. Lydia L. Robinson, 81, who died last Saturday at the home of her son, Fred D. Robinson, 129 West Chartres street. Rev. Fred W. Kenneth Peck Praises Anaheim Company for Its Performance Weary from the strenuous maneuvers in which they participated, Anaheim's Co. K., 185th infantry, California National Guard, reached home Saturady morning after a two-weeks' camp in the state of Washington. Captain Kenneth Peck, commanding officer of the company, which included three officers and 82 men, highly praised his group, declaring that "they exceeded all expectations." The first week of the camp, which was located a few miles north of Centralia, Wash., was devoted to getting the men into shape for the heavy work which came the second week. They marched about six hours every day, and participated in two night maneuvers in addition, Capt. Peck reported. During the second week all National Guard units at the camp were divided into two groups, one an attacking force and the other a defending force. Anaheim's company was part of the former group and their maneuvers were made on foot, while those of the defending and retreating group were made in mechanized units and on horseback. In describing the activity, Capt. Peck said, "We were in the center of the attacking spearhead, and we were on the move for four days.
