Between the Headlines (Continued from Page 1) powerful than Germany even two years after Hitler came to power. But the British public was pacifist in sentiment, the appeasing leaders of the Conservative party which controlled the destinies of England found that a policy of isolation and indifference to issues that indirectly but none the less closely affected Britain was easy to defend. Unfortunately, it seems that democracies make supreme sacrifices only when they are actually faced with no other course. And politicians are always quick to advocate the popular and vote-catching line of least resistance. So Britain's politicians were in no position suddenly to adopt policies of dangerous firmness when one international crisis after another began occurring all over the world. Even after Munich, Chamberlain and his appeasers resisted British conscription, refused to throw every ounce of the Empire's energy behind the rearmament scheme. The result is that today, England, sorely pressed, grievously beset, and without an ally, is fighting for existence and being called upon to make desperate sacrifices which should never have been necessary. The fate of Latin America is as vital to the United States as was the fate of Belgium, and indirectly, of Czechoslovakia and of Austria, too, to England. The Mountain Meadows Massacre. Headlines Week Rev. E. Dow Hoffman, Fullerton Methodist minister, stands clear today of any cloud over his character as the result of testimony presented before Superior Judge Franklin G. West last Thursday. Several witnesses, including the pastor's wife took the stand in behalf of Rev. Hoffman, while the minister's accuser, Willard Edwards of Fullerton, declined to offer evidence supporting his charges. Edwards, a former radio technician, had accused Rev. Hoffman of having an illicit romance with his wife, Oleta Hyder Edwards. The charges were brought in connection with Edwards' efforts to regain the custody of the three Edwards children. Mrs. Luella Hoffman was the principal witness in behalf of the pastor. She disclosed that there had been no secrets between her husband and Mrs. Edwards, whom she had herself befriended. She was not always with them, but if she was not, it was because she voluntarily remained behind, knowing where they were, and why. Other witnesses for the minister included Harry M. May, secretary of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce, Mrs. Rose Alexander, lay leader in the church; Arch Raitt, YMCA secretary; Principal A. S. Redfern of Fullerton high school; John Flanagan, president of the junior chamber of commerce, and A. R. Volk, clothing merchant. ANAHEIM CHURCH RESERVES 600 TICKETS FOR CENTENNIAL EVENT Rev. Father Henry Gross, pastor of St. Boniface Catholic church, has reserved 600 tickets to be distributed among Anaheim people for the outdoor Pontifical Mass to be held in the Los Angeles coliseum, Sunday, October 13. The service will be the main feature of the centenary celebrations which will be held in conjunction with the Sixth National Confrationality of Christian Doctrine congress, scheduled for Los Angeles from October 12 to 15. The answer to subversive movements in this country will be given by Catholic leaders when results of an investigation on teaching citizenship in the Christian home are presented during the congress. Based on the principle that American citizenship can best be taught in the home where religion is practiced, plans for this feature have been completed by the Right Rev. Msgr. John Cawley, P. A., V. G., general chairman. The commission on American citizenship of the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., will supervise the special conferences in citizenship training to be attended by delegates from more than 85 cities headed by 40 archbishops and bishops of the Catholic church. The most Rev. Joseph M. Corrigan, D. D., rector of the university and head of the commission, will speak at the Shrine auditorium, Monday evening, October 14, on "God in the Home; God in the Nation." A precedent in Catholic liturgical usage will be set during the outdoor Pontifical Mass when the national anthem will be played by the Loyola university band in front of the high altar, immediitely before the mass itself begins. The celebrations commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the coming of the first Catholic bishop to California. Special trains will bring delegates from New York, Minneapolis, Milwaukee and other eastren cities. The Orange County Bar as a whole is supporting my candidacy." He further said: "George Varnum (who had spoken for him) ... one of the oldest practicing MEMBERS OF THE BAR OF THIS COUNTY, expressed the sentiment of the lawyer group." The Orange County Bar Association made a correction of the candidate's statement in the following statement by Pres. George F. Holden and Secretary Geo. A. Parker: "The Orange County Bar Ass'n has taken no action relative to sponsoring or supoprting any candidate for the superior court ... and no attorney has been authorized to speak for any candidate on behalf of the Orange County Bar Association.
