IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Extracts From Files of The Gazette Issued Half a Century and a Quarter of a Century Ago. These Files Contain the Only Authentic History in Print of the Daily Doings of the Citizens of Anaheim and Orange County in the Days of the Pioneers. 50 Years Ago July 31, 1890 Our friend, Wm. Schumacher It is said that Pomona is raising money by subscription to lobbying county division bill through the next session of the legislature. The division scheme involves both Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties as well for the new county will be taken from both of the old counties. There is some alarm in both the latter counties in consequence. On last Sunday afternoon a party of gentlemen drove out to Placentia and paid visit to the ranch of Albert Smith, located about a mile north of Fullerton. Al has one of the finest places in that section of the country and next year he will set it to orange trees. He is keeping "bachelor's hall," but it is whispered that he will shortly join the ranks of the Benedick's. had a pig that he valued very highly about a week ago, but when he arose one morning and found that his pigship had devoured forty-two newly hatched chickens, the animal fell from grace, and William gave him away to a neighbor and he insists he has no grudge against his neighbor either. 25 Years Ago July 29, 1915 Vessels laden with munitions of war for the European powers are leaving our ports daily, and are returning with lemons as ballast. Last winter these vessels returned with walnuts as ballast. The free trade law admits these articles practically free of duty. The California lemon grower and the California walnut grower say that by the gods above us, this is everlastingly wrong. The sugar factory began slicing its 1915 crop of beets yesterday with a force of 240 men. 10,000 acres of the best beets ever grown in this county will be turned into sugar during the campaign which will probably be a long one. Edmiston's delivery horse ran away with the wagon on Claudina street Tuesday morning and scattered a load of greceries along the street. Little damage was done. The new lamp post planted at the mouth of the alley in rear of the Dreyfus building was found to be anything but ornamental yesterday morning as it was lying on the pavement. The iron post was broken off near the ground and its cluster of lamps was smashed to atoms. The pole had been bumped into by W. L. Kreuscher during the night as he was on his Child Succumbs To Rare Ailment Schilder's Disease is Fate to 12-Year-Old Girl at Santa Ana One of the world's rarest events, Schilder's disease, claimed the life of 12-year-old Eleanor Florence Hurd of San Ana after brain specialists Mayo Brothers clinic as well other noted specialist had wafted a failing light to save her. The girl, daughter of Mr. Mrs. Paul D. Hurd, 514 Beverly place, died in the Orange county hospital after a six-month battle against the disease. In addition the Mayo Brothers experts, socians from Los Angeles, Beach and Orange county for the dread disease. According to medical authorities there have been but four autotized cases of Schilder's ease in the United States. The ease, said to be related to fantile paralysis, mainly affects children and manifests itself marked loss of hearing, sight speech due to cerebral inflammation and deterioration. Dr. John Montanus, Or county autopsy surgeon, and Robert Patrick, resident pautopsy, results of which are autoysy, results of which arepected to aid in further against the disease. Lucky pigs. The cannery meeting at Kroeger's hall on Monday last was not well attended, and the discussion was postponed to another meeting to be held some time in the future. Is it possible that after what has already been done for the cannery the project will be abandoned for lack of public interest? Attention is directed to the advertisement of W. A. Beckett, secretary of the Orange County Fair association, who is desirous of receiving sealed bids for from 60 to 80 acres of land suitable for fair purposes. Our citizens will do well to consider the advisability of having the fair grounds located here. What offer shall we make? Miss Amanda Warling and Charles Carlsen were married on Sunday afternoon. Kreuscher during the night as he was on his way home from Los Angeles. In attempting to look at his watch the machine got beyond his control and jumped into the sidewalk. The auto was considerably damaged. James Forbes, pioneer orange grower of Placentia, was in town on Friday and made a pleasant call at this office. Mr. Forbes is realizing better than $3.75 for his Valencia oranges. He also reports the walnut crop of Placentia one of the best and heaviest in years. Mr. Forbes is one of the influential citizens of his section and has one of the finest orchards in the southland. A great many members of the local lodge of Eagles area wondering what "Chuck" Hatfield is driving at with his talk of the "Mysterious feed" and "mysterious wedding." Since that time more than 35,000 people have at the point where the Metropolitan Water district is now building a large water softening and filter plant to soften and filter all Colorado river water used for domestic and industrial purposes in the 13 cities of the water district.
