Forest to Close For Summertime
Trabuco, Palomar Districts Affected by Regulation Beginning June 1
Effective June 1, those areas on Trabuco and Palomar ranger districts of the Cleveland National forest, which are normally closed each summer because of fire hazards, will again be closed to all forest visitors or users for the duration of the fire season.
The areas involved include all national forest land on the Trabuco district from the Santa Ana river west of Corona or Santa Margarita peak, and the north and west portion of Palomar mountain on the Palomar district.
However, this will not prohibit travel over state or county highways through these areas nor camping at designated Forest Service camp grounds immediately adjacent to such highways nor the legitimate travel of persons residing within the forest to and from their property over designated routes of travel.
The regulations covering camping, smoking, and requiring the carrying of a shovel and axe will also become effective on June 1, on all parts of the Cleveland National forest where travel is permitted. Camp fires are permitted only in designated public camp grounds and campers must first secure a camp fire permit, which will be issued free by any forest officer. A shovel and axe must be carried by each automobile or pack train party entering the forest. Smoking will be permitted only at camps, places of habitation and specially posted smoking areas.
Forest visitors and residents are required to conduct and help keep

Walks, Talks With Nature
FLATFISH—One of the wonders of the finny world is now flatfish, such as flounders and halibuts, change their forms—even the position of their eyes. By what quirk of nature the left eye of species inhabiting cold water usually migrate to the right side of their heads, whereas the right eye of most species inhabiting warm water journey to the left side, no scientist will venture a guess.
When they are hatched all flatfish are shaped like any other poor fish with their mouths and eyes in their usual position. But after they swim around for a while they exhibit a tendency to turn to one side or the other. At the same time the eye on the lower side migrates to the upper side of the fish.
How this deviation from the conventional bilateral shape arose is a mystery. Whether there came a "sport" in the family tree at some stage in its history, or whether the deviation grew from a gradual modification of the adults under the influence of their environment, cannot be said.
If it came from the latter, selection naturally favored its appearance earlier and earlier in the development of the fish, until it reached the larval stage. Earlier transformation would be disadvantageous, since there is a lack of plankton—the natural food supply of the newly hatched—at the sea bottom, and the transformed fishlings would find a scarcity of provender at a critical period.
Status of Three Projects is Told
Prado, Fullerton and Brea Dams are Reported on by Army Engineers
Status of the three Orange county flood control projects either in the process of development or nearly ready to start was given late last week by the Los Angeles office of the United States army engineers. Projects reported on are the Prado dam construction job, the Fullerton dam development and the Brea dam work.
Work was started on the Fullerton project about 10 days ago under the direction of Contractor Charles U. Heuser of Glendale who is allowed slightly more than nine months to complete the job. It is expected that about 75 men will be employed on the project by the end of this week. The project will cost $234,903 and is located approximately half a mile north of the intersection of Associated road and Pioneer avenue, inside the city limits of Fullerton.
The Prado job is about 60 percent completed and a force of approximately 300 men is at work. This force is expected to be increased by July 1 to around 450 men, a figure which will probably be maintained until completion of the project near the first of next year.
The engineers will open the biosphere on the Brea dam project on June 5 and work is expected to start later than September 1. The contractor will have 500 days which to complete the project after being notified to begin work. Estimated cost of the work is set at $1,000,000, and it is believed that work will be provided for some 125 men.

Forest visitors and residents are urged to cooperate and help keep fires out of the forests by complying with all federal, state, and county regulations designed to reduce the fire menace.
All Dogs and Cats On Leash in Parks
Dogs and cats are prohibited on government land within national parks and monuments unless they are on leash, created or otherwise under physical restrictive control at all times, advises the touring bureau of the Automobile Club of Southern California. Superintendents, however, may designate areas to which dogs and cats shall not be admitted.
Superintendents also may establish time limitations on camping in any public camp ground. Upon the posting of such limitations no person, party or organization shall be permitted to camp longer than the period limited for the particular area during any calendar year.

Army Recruiting Activity Resumed
The United States army is again accepting applications for enlistment of qualified men after being practically closed since February when the authorized strength of 227,000 men was reached.
According to Sergeant Eldridge McCormack, in charge of the recruiting station, Federal building in Santa Ana, telegraphic authority to immediately begin enlisting approximately 1000 men for field artillery, 300 for signal corps and a limited number of men for quartermaster, ordinance department, and engineers for station on the Pacific Coast, was received today by the Los Angeles Recruiting district, the first quota received under the President's recent preparedness plan.
Colonel Aubrey Lippincott, army recruiting officer for southern California, stated that single men between the ages of 18 and 35 years, of sound physique and good character are eligible, and that applicants for the signal corps must have a high school education.

Huge Damage Action Dismissed by Judge
Damage suit brought by Bryan K. Burnett, Santa Ana steel contractor, against Consolidated Steel company of Los Angeles, was thrown out of court last Friday by Superior Judge Harry C. West-over when he ruled that Burnett had filed the wrong sort of suit and that the statute of limitations has barred the Santa Ana contractor from opportunity to file the proper type.
Burnett had asked about a half-million dollars from the Los Angeles firm on a charge that Consolidated Steel company had ruined his business. The defense contended that the complaint by Burnett against the steel company involved slander and libel as a cause of action, rather than the claim for damages based upon loss of business.
