No Alphabetical Government Agencies or Debts in Northern County
Found! A California county is debt-free, has no alphabetical government agencies such as WPA, is building a $20 courthouse without a bond and takes care of its relief without outside assistance!
Amador county is the old-fashioned American county, according to a report made to the joint legislative interim committee inviting the Stae Relief administration by Senator Jesse May Angeles Camp, member of a committee headed by Senator Nielson of Sacramento.
"There is no SRA in Amador county," Mayo told Senator Phillips, chairman of the committee. "There are noeral or state relief agencies existing there. Offers of financial aid by the WPA have been denied. Every person in Amador county in need is being taken off by county contributions and entire administrative cost of classes of relief is but three-cent—in strong contrast to SRA overhead elsewhere with averages 25 percent or more."
Dan Ramazzotti, chairman of the board of supervisors, said after five years accepting federal state aid, Amador found itself $60,000 in debt not solving its relief problem return to old-fashioned American principles now has brought county out of debt and independent of outside aid."

Boy Scouts Plan Special Programs
Anaheim Troops Will Attend Swim Meet Saturday at Huntington Beach
Activities for the Anaheim Boy Scouts for the next few weeks will include many scout programs. Next Saturday, April 13, at the Huntington Beach pool the Anaheim Troops No. 71, 72, 73 and 74 will participate in the first all county swim meet.
Scoutmaster Ed Elliott of Troop No. 12, Huntington Beach, will be in charge of the events and demonstrations in life saving and swimming. Ribbons are to be awarded to all scouts winning first, second, third or fourth place in any of the swim or fun events. The public is invited to attend any part of this program starting at 1:30 o’clock.
A group of local scouts will attend a special surprise meeting at the Santa Ana Elks club on April 10 at 7 o’clock to see the Gilmore Oil company’s interesting show. Moving pictures of Sir Malcom Campbell, speed king, and pictures of the annual Gilmore Yosemite economy run in which Orange county scouts played an important part will be presented to a group of 500 scouts. Mr. Gilmore has asked that the senior scouts of Orange county in charge of the radio and first aid that broadcast the road conditions to the contestants in this annual Yosemite run be recognized as the official radio patrol for this annual event.

Review of Novel is Feature of Meeting
A review of John Steinbeck’s novel, “Grapes of Wrath,” was given by Holmes Bishop of Orange at the meeting of the Anaheim Rotary club Monday noon at the Elks clubhouse. A. A. McCormick was program chairman and introduced Bishop.
Bishop described the novel as a determined effort to stir up class hatreds, foment revolution and tear down the profit system, and said that the story is untrue and maligns the characters described in it.
Election was held for a board of directors with results to be announced next Monday.
Gas Bills During Winter Reduced
Mark Twain once said, “Everyone talks about the weather, but nobody ever does anything about it.”
However, the weather and the California railroad commission certainly did something about southern Californians’ gas bills this last winter.
Customers served by the Southern Counties Gas company and Southern California Gas company saved more than $2,400,000 on their bills during November, December, January and February, as compared with the same four months in the previous winter, according to Fred G. Merker, district manager, Southern Counties Gas company.
A large portion of this saving was attributable to the fact that almost universally used in eastern California for house as well as for cooking and heating, was substantially the levels of the 1938-39 Customer savings resulting in warm weather accounts approximately $1,800,000.

Merker, district manager, Southern Counties Gas company.
A large portion of this saving was attributable to the fact that these four consecutive months this winter were the warmest winter months ever recorded by the United States weather bureau since it began reporting in 1877, and the demand for gas.
A large saving proximately $600,000 is ther result of the lower gas redered by the California rebody, which became effectiing 1939. In a year of temperatures it is estimatethese savings would amomore than $1,550,000.

Ben-Hur Leader In Coffee Field
Time is proving the truth and authenticity of Ben-Hur advertising. Many years ago Ben-Hur came out with a new idea—the original Ben-Hur drip coffee, a coffee specialized in every way for the more healthful drip method of making. During all these years Ben-Hur has been continually experimenting and improving methods of developing, introducing, and saving, more of the elusive and volatile delicious coffee flavor oils into the protection of the sealed vacuum cann.
One by one other manufacturers are now reversing themselves and admitting what Ben-Hur discovered years ago, that coffee should be specially adopted for each method of making.
Ben-Hur has the advantage of years of production experience of specializing on coffees for different methods of making—drip, percolator and silex—and its adverting expression "Streamlined for cleaner flavor with less coffee" will now also prove its truth and sincerity to all who will lay aside buying by "habit", and by careful measurements, test Ben-Hur coffee for more delicious flavor.
Troop to Entertain Parents at Supper
Members of Boy Scout Troop No. 71 of Anaheim are planning a pot-luck supper at which their parents will be guests. The event is to be held sometime this month, but a date has not yet been set. Preliminary plans for the troop court of honor were also made at the meeting of the troop Monday night. This event also will be held this month, on a date not yet determined. Participation in the camporal at Santa Ana during May was approved by the troop.
