WINTER TRAVEL TO CALIFORNIA IS WELL AHEAD OF LAST YEAR
A substantial upturn in winter travel to California as compared to last year was revealed recently.
The number of visitors arriving by auto so far this season is 16.4% ahead of last, it was revealed by Don Thomas, managing director of the All-Year club, the southland's official tourist organization.
Railroads, airlines, tour services, and hotels also reported an increase in westbound travel, especially during the past few weeks, he said.
Auto visitors entering California during the months of November, December and January totalled 270,634. For the same date last year the figure was 232,478. The increase is 38,156.
"It is too early," commented Thomas, "to predict what the entire winter season will be. However, reports seem to indicate that this winter, even though it

already is ahead of last year, is what we might call a 'late winter season.'
"This is borne out by indications of a sharp upturn during the past 10 days or so. Increased westward travel is reported by the railroads since February 1. One airline reports an upturn of 38%. A large tour agency says business has increased sharply this month in Los Angeles and all its branches at Pasadena and other nearby cities.
"If this is a late winter season, as it is indicated, this means that our winter visitors will stay with us very late in the spring. One tour authority believes they will be with us until May.
"It may be," Thomas said, "that the war-marooned globe-trotters, who cannot go to Europe this year, have finished shopping around, and are now coming to California."
Last year's winter season, which has been bettered so far this year with the season already more than half over, brought southern California 601,369 visitors, Thomas said. These people spent an estimated $78,250,134 with southern California stores, hotels, and business generally.

Deadline is Near For Tax Returns
U. S. Collector of Internal Revenue Nat Regan calls attention to the fact that there is only one month more in which to file the federal income tax returns for the calendar year 1939, and urges that the taxpayers file their returns as early as possible in order to avoid the usual last minute rush, and possible assertion of penalties.

Firemen Take Verdict From Athletics, 12 to 3, To Even Series
Joe Huarte's Anaheim Athletic wound up their activities uninterrupted after the "Angels," the Philadelphia Atheltics, finish using Palma stadium by blowing a hole to 3 decision to Manager Franco Lemon's Fullerton Fireman Amerige park, in Fullerton last Sunday. The loss evened the series between the two clubs Anaheim having taken a 5 to 3 decision the week before.
Anaheim wasn't in the running at any stage of the game and didn't even score until the sixth inning when Joe Heinz' home run over the left field fence drove Neja and Johnny Lan Franco ahead of him. That blow sent Tony Hines, who had hurled two hit balls to that point, to the showers and brought Basil Loigne to the firing line. The Athletics loaded the bases on double by Bill Thomas, a way to Jerry Gardner and Bud Stel fel's life when Bud Kavana tipped him bat but nothing came of it as Manager Huarte grounded out while batting for D Miller.
The Firemen wasted little time in getting on the good side of the ledger. They shoved over two runs in the first inning and added single tallies in both the second and third rounds. Two Anaheim errors aided in producing the run.
After Anaheim had cut the margin with the three-run buildup in the sixth, Manager Lemon put the clincher on the game in the last half of the frame by cracking a towering fly over the right flank.

It is estimated that the cost will be between $50,000 and $60,000, of which the school district, as sponsor, will provide one-fourth in cash. The remainder would be furnished through WPA labor and materials.
Taxes collected from all the aristocrats, as a fine of five cents will be charged to anyone not dressed in Dogpatch fashion.

Sportopix by RUSS McCOMB
The Sunset League's close basketball race came to an end last Friday evening, with Jordan's upset victory over the championship Orange team, 33 to 27, as the feature. Coach Dick Rayan's Anaheim Colonists ended their season with two wins and four defeats to put them in a three-way tie with Fullerton and Newport Harbor for fifth, sixth and seventh places. So close was the race, however, that the three cellar teams were only three games behind the pennant winner.
Excelsior finished in second place with four wins and two losses, while Huntington Beach and Jordan tied for third with an even break in six contests. Orange will undoubtedly meet Tustin, Orange league titlists, in the first CIF playoff.
PLAYOFF CONTESTANTS TO BE DETERMINED
Contestants in the annual play-off or the Orange Empire junior college conference basketball championship will be determined this week end in games to be played at Riverside and Pomona. Date for the opening of the series has not yet been set.
The four leading teams in the conference hook up in the final games, which is nice for the box offices. The Red Raiders, while in fourth place, are in a position to throw the conference standings into a installation of $7000 worth of new equipment which will quadruple capacity of his plant, was announced yesterday by Lars Lund, head of Lund & Sons company, paint manufacturers of Anaheim.
At the same time Lund revealed that he had purchased the building on Manchester boulevard, just west of the city limits, which previously had been occupied by the Agricultural Pump & Supply company and is remodeling and redecorating the building for use as a warehouse and showroom.
Lund & Sons company is also planning a clearance sale event which will start on March 1. Substantial reductions will be made in the prices of paints and wallpapers during this event, which will last 15 days, Lund said.
FORMER HORNETS ON STANFORD SQUAD
Two more former Fullerton junior college track aces are now on the track and field squad at Stanford university, following the lead of Ray Mallot and Paul Moore, two other ex-Hornets who made names for themselves on the Indian track.

The Red Raiders, while in fourth place, are in a position to throw the conference standings into a real jumble. A Pomona win would land the Raiders, Fullerton, and the loser of the Don-Tiger battle in a three-way tie for second place and give the conference moguls something of a headache. Fullerton fans aren't overly concerned, however, because the Hornets of late have been playing a brand of basketball that is reminiscent of the great team of last year. On straight dope, it is hard to see how the Raiders can take the Hornets.
Picking the winner of the Santa Ana-Riverside game in advance is an entirely different matter. The offensive and defensive strength of the two clubs is virtually the same, and each has lost only to Fullerton.
