Friends Honor
S. C. Hartranft
S. C. Hartranft was pleasantly surprised by some 150 friends who gathered at his home on Raymond avenue Saturday evening to compliment Mr. Hartranft on his 80th birthday anniversary. Congratulations were brought from the Anaheim First Presbyterian church, Anaheim Masonic lodge, Anaheim Rotary club and others.
Mr. Hartranft was assisted in greeting his guests by his wife, children and grandchildren. In the receiving line with Mr. and Mrs. Hartranft were Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Hartranft of Fresno and their children, Robert and Lucille, and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Wildman of Santa Monica, and their children, Jack and Gerrie.
Mrs. R. N. Ashley of Anaheim, Mrs. W. H. Skillman and Mrs. Halsey I. Spence, both of Fullerton, assisted Mrs. Hartranft in serving punch, cakes and sandwiches to the assembled group.
One of the features of the evening was a group of piano solos played by Dr. Howard A. Tews of Anaheim.

Session Held Here
Rebekah lodge members from Torosa and Sycamore lodges of Santa Ana, Aloha of Westminster, Ruby of Orange and Fullerton were guests of the Lois Rebekah lodge of Anaheim at the 79th district's semi-annual session last Friday. The conclave was held in the I.O.O.F. hall.
A full day's program was held following the address of welcome by Mrs. Lola Compton and Anaheim. Mrs. Mabel Ives of Anaheim, district deputy president, officiated while visiting dignitaries were being escorted to their positions.
Exemplification of a "model lodge" was given during the morning with Mrs. Compton assuming her own office as noble grand. Other officers were chosen from the various lodge represented. At the close of this ceremony lunchon was served in the lodge rooms.
Further exemplification and instructions occupied the afternoon hours, which preceeded a formal banquet at the Marigold cafe over Mrs. Compton presided.
At the close of the banquet the group adjourned to the I.O.O.F. hall where the regular meeting of Lois Rebekah lodge was conducted.

NEWSY NOTES
Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Hackley and sons, Jack and Hugh, arrived in Anaheim last Saturday for a visit with Mr. Hackley's brother, E. L. Hackley. The Hackley family is from Monroe, Louisiana, and they plan to spend about two weeks here.
Capt. Marcus F. Andrade returned to his position with the city police department Monday after a two-weeks' vacation which he spent in Carbon canyon and in the vicinity of Santa Barbara. Mrs. Andrade spent the same two weeks in Long Beach and remained there this week, also.
Edgar Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. W. Barnes, 623 N.Zeyn street, has been appointed a second lieutenant, U. S. marine corps reserve.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leo O. Oden, 124 S. Ohio street, Saturday, August 19, at St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul L. Winson and their small daughter, Stephanie, have moved from their home on West La Palma street to 1513 Bentley, West Los Angeles. Mr Winsor has received promotion and transfer from the Anaheim branch of the Bank of America to the Highland Park branch.
Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Hubbs and daughter, Virginia, of Salem, Ore., visited briefly in Anaheim Monday. Mr Hubbs, a member of the city engineering staff from 1924 to 1929, is now county engineer or Marion county, Oregon.

Rigby Family Takes Long Trip
Seven thousand miles of driving along the western slope of the United States and into Canada is the record made by Mr. and Mrs. K. B. Rigby and sons, Kenneth, Jr., and Donald, who returned to their home on East Wilhelmina street last Thursday night.
Given a five weeks' vacation because he had completed 25 years of service with the Standard Oil company, Mr. Rigby and his family made use of the long holiday by visiting Salt Lake City, Grand Teton National park, Yellowstone and Glacier National parks en route to Waterton Lakes National park in Canada.
The Rigby family then visited in Calgary and Edmonton and took a trip to Jasper National park before returning to Calgary. On the return trip home they stopped at Lake Louise, Bamff, Spokane, Seattle, Vancouver, Victoria, San Francisco and the Golden Gate Exposition.
Business conditions are generally about the same as last year, both in Canada and in the northwest, Mr. Rigby reported.
Cone Bros. Staff Enjoys Outing
Guests of Everett M. Cone and Carroll D. Cone, their employers, were members of the Cone Brothers staff last weekend at the Anaheim Kiwanis club's lodge at Idyllwild. The group spent their time in hiking, swimming, playing golf and ball games and dancing. Meals were prepared by Bob Mills.

Entertains Thursday
Guests from Fullerton, Anaheim
and Fulton, Mo., enjoyed a luncheon and afternoon of bridge at the Fred Backs home on North Philadelphia street Thursday, with Miss Florence Backs as hostess. She was assisted in serving by her mother, Mrs. Fred Backs.
At the close of the bridge games prizes were awarded to Miss Betty Crane of Anaheim and Mrs. Dwight Phillips of Fullerton. Other guests were Mrs. Irvin Chagman, Mrs. E. R. Pauline Knapp Weds
J. Rod Brastad
Marriage of Miss Pauline Knapp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy A. Knapp, to J. Rod Brastad, son of Dr. and Mrs. J. P. Brastad, was revealed last Thursday evening when the newly-weds entertained a small group of intimate friends at their new home in Santa Ana.
The wedding ceremony took place on August 12 at Phoenix, Ariz. Miss Knapp and Mr. Brastad had originally planned to be married on September 16.
Guests at the party Thursday evening were Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Harbert, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Heffner and Mr. and Mrs. Mickey Walker. Mrs. Brastad was assisted by her mother Mrs. J. P. Brastad.

Frances Barber to Wed Edward Stanley
Passing the traditional box of chocolates at a meeting of her sorority, Sigma Phi, Miss Frances Barber of Fullerton Tuesday evening disclosed the news that she is to become the bride of Edward S. Stanley of Anaheim. Miss Nona Planting was sorority hostess at her home on West Broadway, Anaheim, with Mrs. Merle West of Anaheim assisting.
Miss Barber is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul F. Barber and Mr. Stanley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Stanley, 1055 N. Palm street. No date has been announced for the wedding.
Saturday evening 36 members of the group and their guests gathered at the August Eltiste home for a dance arranged by Miss Planting, Miss Isobel Bruington and Miss Virginia Scott.
Miss Maxine White Weds Santa Ana Man
When Miss Maxine White of Anaheim exchanged vows with Bill Hale Gary of Santa Ana Saturday evening, she was given in marriage by her twin brother, Max White, also of Anaheim. The ceremony was performed in the Orange Avenue Christian church parsonage by Rev. A. S. Bash.
Miss White is the daughter of Mrs. Martha B. Bingham, 118 N. Olive street, and Mr. Gary is the son of Mrs. Louie Perley of Santa Ana. Miss Ruth Eggert of Anaheim was the maid of honor and J. Russell Gary attended his brother as best man.
After a short trip, the new Mr. and Mrs. Gary have returned to Santa Ana to make their home at 206 E.-Fourteenth street. Mrs. Gary is a graduate of Anaheim union high school and her husband was graduated from Santa Ana high school.

Music Conservatory to Present Recital
Anaheim Conservatory of Music will present a public recital in the Greek theater of Anaheim city park a week from this evening it was announced today by Mrs. A. Siegel, head of the conservatory.
The program, which will start at 7:30 o'clock, will include piano and accordion selections, dance numbers and vocal offerings, Mrs. Siegel said.

Weds James Karrick
Marriage vows was exchanged in Las Vagas, Nev., last Saturday by Miss Josephine Daniel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Daniel, and James E. Karrick. The wedding was performed by the Baptist minister at Las Vegas.
Mr. and Mrs. Karrick returned at once to Anaheim to spend the week end here and at Balboa.
Mrs. Karrick, a graduate of Anaheim union high school and Fullerton junior college, is employed by the Industrial Fuel Supply company here. Mr. Karrick is affiliated with the Kraft company.
Anniversaries of Twins Celebrated
Celebrating the birthday anniversaries of Max Erwin and Marion Erwin of Fullerton, twin sons of Mrs. C. W. Hedges, members of the immediate family gathered at Anaheim city park Tuesday evening for a barbecued steak dinner. The remainder of the evening was spent at the Hedges home on West Center street.
Those who took part in the event were Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Hedges, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Erwin and daughter, Betty Dee, Mr. and Mrs. Max Erwin, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Erwin, and Ernest Hedges of Ontario, son of C. W. Hedges.

Dry Ice Being Used for Desert Driving
Many motorists crossing the hot desert country during the summer months are using dry ice to lower the temperatures within their cars, according to the National Automobile club. Dry ice, properly used in a car, will usually lower the temperature from eight to ten degrees. Twenty pounds of carbonic ice is generally sufficient to cool a sedan for 10 to 14 hours. It may be had in Los Angeles for five cents per pound in convenient packages. Detailed instructions for its use should be obtained from the manufacturer.
Ontario Tournament to Open on Sept. 2
Anaheim tennis players have been invited to compete in the third annual Ontario City Open Tennis championships to be held on the Chaffey junior college court September 2 and 3. Competition will be held in men's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles, according to E. D. McCabe, tournament manager.
Entries may be made with McCabe of 558 Lynn Haven court, Ontario. The tournament is sponsored jointly by the city recreation group and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.

Drunk Driver Give Suspended Sense
When he agreed to make tuition at the rate of $20 a month to Joe Wilson of Fullerton fjuries sustained in an accident August 2, James Thomas of Orange was given a six-month suspended sentence for two years a charge of drunk driving Justice of the Peace C Kuchel. Thomas appeared in last Thursday.
The Orange man was originally charged with felony drunk driving but the charge was changed by the district attorney's office favor of the misdemeanor plaint.

Associated Group
to Meet Tuesday
The Associated Chambers of Commerce of Orange county will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Orange county next Tuesday evening at the Golden Bear cafe in Stington Beach. Glenn L. Martin to Visit in Santa Ana
Glenn L. Martin, Baltimore airplane manufacturer and one of the most noted names in national aviation, will visit in Santa Ana next week.
Martin and his mother, Mrs. Minta Martin, will be guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Stephenson. Martin now is stopping with his mother in Los Angeles.

Anaheim Men Place in Swimming Event
Two Anaheim Red Cross life savers entered, and placed, in the annual one-mile swim at Cabrillo Beach Sunday. The event is sponsored by the Los Angeles Red Cross Examiners club and drew 100 competitors.
Ed Sockerson placed fourth in the examiners' group and Douglas Allen finished fourth in the senior group. They were the only competitors from Orange county.
Glenn L. Martin, Baltimore airplane manufacturer and one of the most noted names in national aviation, will visit in Santa Ana next week.
Martin and his mother, Mrs. Minta Martin, will be guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Stephenson. Martin now is stopping with his mother in Los Angeles.
The aviator started in the business of manufacturing airplanes in an abandoned church in Santa Ana. He has since won world renown for clipper ships and huge bombers turned out by the Baltimore plant.
Long Beach Man is Sentenced to Jail
Charles Furlow of Long Beach was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail Monday by Justice of the Peace Charles Kuchel after pleading guilty to a charge of drunk driving. Furlow also pleaded guilty to a drunk charge and was given a 10-day suspended sentence.
