Analysis of Public Opinion Shows Conditions Needed for Prosperity
Public demands for reduced taxes, less government spending and a leaning towards business as the moving force for recovery were reflected in the results of a recent survey.
These were the results in answers to the questions of—
To increase prosperity government spending should be:
Decreased ... 58%
Let alone ... 23%
Depends ... 8%
Increased ... 6%
Don't know ... 5%
An analysis of the responses to this question revealed a trend showing that as the questioners went down the income scale the percentage wanting an increase in spending went up.
Equally interesting were the answers to the related question sub-
Work of Testing Gold Progresses
Engineers, practical miners and mill operators have been and are conducting investigations of recovery possibilities of free gold at many points along the Santa Ana river bed in the East Anaheim, Placentia and Atwood areas. Developments have been virtually continuous since the discovery of gold traces several weeks ago.
Old river channels are being checked. Test holes are being drilled at various points and will be drilled at others to check depth of bed rock or solid clay which might form a floor for the vast deposits of gold bearing gravel and silt deposited over thousands of years by the Santa Ana river.
River Bed Checked
Engineers are reported to have checked the entire river bed from the San Bernardino mountains to the sea in connection with surveys of gold bearing possibilities and points of greatest potential value production for development.
The gold is believed to have originated in the San Bernardino mountains, but very little if any has been deposited in the river mitted on taxes. These are responses to the questions—To increase prosperity should be.
Lowered ... 4%
Let Alone ... 3%
Depends ... 2%
Raised ... 1%
Don't Know ... 1%
Another question asked the lic to specify among these, the necessity for increased prosperity. These were the results:
Government let business alone ... 3%
Increase production ... 2%
Pensions after 60 ... 2%
Improved conditions in the South ... 2%
Unemployment insurance benefits ... 2%
Don't Know ... 1%
Other reasons ... (The giving of "other rea and the citing of 2 reasons by persons made the aggregate more than 100%).
"Over one-third of those sponding to this question said thought the most important that would contribute to profit was to have government business alone," the analyst on this point.
"But with one-fourth tha thing of first importance order to improve national perity is to increase industrial production, it shows that industry's foremost questions, which the people are deeply and have opinions."

Engineers are reported to have checked the entire river bed from the San Bernardino mountains to the sea in connection with surveys of gold bearing possibilities and points of greatest potential value production for development.
The gold is believed to have originated in the San Bernardino mountains, but very little if any has been deposited in the river bed above Santa Ana canyon through which the river enters Orange county.
Assayers have been making the most profit on Orange county's 1939 gold rush thus far, but discovery of free gold in coarse gravel at a number of points, and tests of separation of the metal found in hematite deposits, indicate further developments for actual commercial recovery may soon be started.
