S. Simmons, assistant advertising manager of the California Fruit Growers Exchange. In Orange county the Santa Ana and Fullerton Junior Chambers of Commerce are giving 100 per cent cooperation and developments in the two citiesare satisfactory. In Anaheim the work of C. J. Mauerhan and A. J. Shutte, chairman and member of the farm bureau's citrus campaign committee, has been outstanding. Practically all the leading stores in Anaheim expressed a willingness to display fruit in their windows and in general support the campaign. The week of July.24-29 has been set aside as "orange week" in Santa Ana and Fullerton in particular and in Orange county in general. With the cooperation of service clubs, the junior chambers of commerce are planning to have a display of oranges in every store window of the two cities. A fine example of cooperation was offered by James A. Irvine, Sr., who served orange juice to 150 guests at his picnic held near Emerald Bay on July 4. Church Conclave to Open July 17 One of the largest conventions of the year is that of the Christian churches and Churches of Christ of southern California and Arizona, Note Swallowing Leads to Arrest Santa Ana police yesterday arrested a Fullerton woman on petty theft charges after she assertedly tore up and swallowed a note for $63, for which she was being sued by a collection agency. Officers said Mrs. Martha Salee, 36, went to the agency and asked to see the note. A. A. Appling, the proprietor, told officers she snatched the piece of paper and stuffed it into her mouth. The two then wrestled around the office until Appling finally recovered what remained of the note, he told police. Mrs. Salee was taken before City Judge Donald Harwood and pleaded not guilty to the petty theft charge. She was released under $200 bail and date for her trial was set for next Tuesday. "Summer Discount" Plan is in Effect An opportunity to modernize with up-to-date gas heating equipment in preparation for the coming winter months is afforded Orange county householders under terms of a special "summer discount" plan worked out by local gas appliances dealers acting in cooperation with Southern Counties Gas company. Details of the plan, which went into effect on July 1, include a discount up to 10 per cent on central heating units, floor furnaces, and similar permanently installed gas equipment according to Fred G. These Warm Days Cool Off Church Conclave to Open July 17 One of the largest conventions of the year is that of the Christian churches and Churches of Christ of southern California and Arizona, which meets every year in July for a full week at the Municipal auditorium in Long Beach. The attendance reaches from 2000 to 4000 per day. The gathering this year will be July 17-23, according to Rev. Don Earl Boatman, pastor of the Anaheim Church of Christ. Chief speakers are Dr. R. H. Miller, pastor National City Christian church, Washington, D. C. and Dr. P. H. Welshimer, Canton, Ohio. The program will include the subjects of evangelism, Christian education, college work, benevolences, Christian unity, missionary work at home and abroad, and world affairs. Rev. C. L. Waite, pastor at Riverside, is president. Divorced 45 Years, Couple to Remarry Divorced 45 years ago, Edwin Day and Mrs. May Dotts plan to remarry in the near future. They were reunited recently in the home of their daughter, Mrs. Henry Davis of Orange and plans for the wedding were made at that time. The couple were married, at Kinkaid, Kans., 50 years ago and were divorced five years later. Since that time both remarried and the mate of each has passed away. BIG LOAN VOLUME Deposits total $1,408,306,000, an increase of $50,528,000 over June 30, 1938, while total resources stand at $1,549,824,000, a gain of $51,297,000 for the same period. Earnings for the first six months of 1939 are $14,777,000. Dividends paid out in the same period at the annual rate of $2.40 a share on 4,000,000 shares outstanding amounted to $4,800,000. There was added to surplus and undivided profits accounts the amount of $3,312,000 after provision of $2,100,000 reserve for depreciation on banking premises, amortization of bond pre-miums, etc., and $3,967,000 reserves applied to reduce carrying value of assets. PROFIT SHARING PLAN Also, during the half year, $597,-000 was allotted to the bank's personnel under its profit sharing bonus plan, on the basis of 7½ per cent of salaries up to $500 a month, and 5 per cent of any portion of salaries in excess of $500 a month. The plan, which has been effective since December 1, 1937, and which makes each employee an actual partner in the enterprise, has been accepted as another instance of the leadership of Bank of America in anticipating modern trends, according to President L. M. Giannini. SAVINGS RATE UNCHANGED In commenting further, President Giannini said: "Our gratifying showing made possible without the necessity of lowering our present rate on savings deposits is due to popular acceptance of the branch banking method under which we have brought metropolitan banking service to 307 communities through 495 branches; thus providing an unique public service to all of California."
