Hospital Limits Relief to Aliens
Definite limitation of relief to aliens is the policy of the Orange county hospital, Supervisor Harry D. Riley of Anaheim declared this week. The supervisor pointed out that under the law aliens are entitled to relief if they meet residential requirements, but that they may later be removed from relief rolls, or deported.
Riley declined to speak authoritatively regarding the welfare department, but said that since he has been on the board of supervisors he has insisted upon holding alien relief to the minimum. Hospital Superintendent H. E. Zaiser and the social worker there are cooperating with him, the supervisor said.
"We do not extend aid to aliens so long as they are able to move on," declared Riley. "We cannot, of course, let them die on our hands, if they are unable to move, but we stop relief just short of cruelty. If they can proceed, they must do so."
"The law gives us the right to drop them from relief rolls or deport them once they have accepted relief. If they have lived in the state three years, without assistance, other than from blood relatives, they are eligible to receive relief—just once. We apply that rule at the county hospital rigidly, where it is possible.
Anaheim Men "Lose" Large Fish Tuesday
Monte Webb and his friend, Rallie Crosby, Jr., took an afternoon off from their respective duties as barber and salesman to go fishing in the Balboa Bay last Tuesday and had this to say about their luck:
"We caught everything from anchovies to a 12-foot swordfish. We called a local transfer to come and get us and they did—but the truck was robbed and all we have to prove our luck is our own ability to tell a convincing story.
"The driver of the truck has absolutely refused to give any testimony in our behalf—but that is only because he is afraid of his job.
"But we did have a good time and advise any shop worn Anaheimer to try his luck at fishing—if he feels unlucky and wants to prove that there is still a little luck left for the man who goes after it."
This is a small county in area, and we consider that if they have been able to get this far, they can go just the few miles farther that will remove them from our jurisdiction."
The water area of continental United States, exclusive of the Great Lakes, amounts to 53,013 square miles.
Change Revealed by Gas Company
Walter L. H. Geldert, who for the past 12 years has been commercial agent for the Southern Counties Gas company’s Pomona district, has been transferred this week to Santa Ana to act as commercial agent for the Orange county district, according to an announcement made today by Fred G. Mørker, district manager.
Geldert succeeds Lorien G. Moore who has been in charge of the company’s local sales activities for several years and who recently resigned.
He has been with the gas company since 1916, originally in the purchasing department in Los Angeles and later in the Long Beach district. In 1924 he was transferred to Anaheim, then advanced to the Pomona territory.
New Record is Set by March Building
Building activity in California climbed to new high territory in March according to Bank of America's "Business Review" for that month as prepared by the institution's analysis and research department.
Value of permits issued for all types of building in 32 principal California cities was $20,752,991. This says the review, is the highest monthly total during the recovery, representing a 68 per cent increase over the previous month and a gain of 43 per cent over March, 1938.
