Ben-Hur Coffee Has High Rating That Ben-Hur supreme quality coffee "has what it takes": in richer flavor and economy is pretty well established in the opinion and taste of southland housekeepers. But these folks will be interested to know that their own judgment is further substantiated by most of the important hotels and restaurants of this territory which use Ben-Hur exclusively. When the management of Santa Anita track organized its restaurant and stand service the selection of a coffee was given as much consideration as any other major problem. The chosen brand must be extra-rich and extra-delicious and meet the taste of patrons of every class. Only after the most exacting cup tests of all brands sold in the southwest was a coffee chosen—and that coffee was supreme quality Ben-Hur. Since Santa Anita's opening day no other coffee has been served by the racing association. Inglewood track officials also selected Ben-Hur as its "official coffee" after the same kind of exacting tests. It will be remembered that Ben-Hur "drip" was the only coffee served the world's athletes at the Olympic games held in Los Angeles some years ago. THE POCKETBOOK KNOWLEDGE BY TOPPS PASTEUR'S PRIDE— PARIS—One hot July morning in 1885, feverish little Joseph Meister was dragged by his frantic mother through the streets of Paris in search of an unknown scientist who, according to rumors, could prevent rabies. For nine-year-old Joseph had been bitten in 14 places by a huge, mad dog and in a desperate attempt to cheat death, his mother had fled from their home town in Alsace to Paris. Early in the afternoon she met a young physician in a hospital. "You mean Pasteur," he said. "I'll take you there." Bacteriologist Louis Pasteur, who kept kennels of mad dogs in a crowded little laboratory and was bounded by medical criticism, had never tried his rabies vaccine on a human being before. But moved by the tears of Mme. Meister, he had the boy injected with material from the spinal cord of a rabbit that had died from rabies. For three weeks Pasteur watched anxiously at the boy's bedside. To his overwhelming joy, the boy recovered. The French Academy of Sciences then officially recognized Pasteur's serum, and hostile criticism melted before the warm rush of praise from all over the world. Hundreds of persons who had been bitten by mad dogs rushed to his laboratory, and a public international subscription was opened to build larger quarters. In 1888 President Carnot of France, surrounded by a brilliant throng of cheering scientists, opened the Pasteur Institute. Louis Pasteur died within seven years, but around his tomb, which stands in the largest of the three institute buildings, moves a crowd of busy scientists who are so passionately devoted to Pasteur's ideals of free criticism and painstaking experiment that his life Home Construction in State Sets Maintaining the total value of new residential building permits issued in principal California cities during February was $6,268,000 as compared with $3,835,000 in the same month a year ago, a gain of one per cent, according to the analysis and research department at the Bank of America. February permits were the highest for a month during the past ten periods for which comparable data are available. logical discoveries, largely direct applicable to preventive medicine. Among the achievements of this institute are development of vaccine to prevent tuberculosis epochmaking work on the diphtheria bacillus, thypus discovery syphilis and encephalitis investigations. PURSE STRINGS— LONDON — Laborite member of Parliament Dr. Edith Summerskill is a belligerent feminist, a top-notch gynecologist, and mother of two children. During the house of commons' question time one day last week, Edith Summerskill stood up and asked: "Will the prime minister consider the introduction of legislation to compel wage earners to disclose their wages to their wives?" Neville Chamberlain, whose good spouse knows very well that his quarterly government pay check is $12,500, rose to answer crisply: "He will not." Louis Pasteur died within seven years, but around his tomb, which stands in the largest of the three institute buildings, moves a crowd of busy scientists who are so passionately devoted to Pasteur's ideals of free criticism and pain-taking experiment that his lifetime has really been projected into the future. Many of his successors still use his old furniture, work with his old instruments. And janitor of the institute is old Joseph Meister. This week the Pasteur Institute celebrates its 50th anniversary. President Albert Lebrun of France is scheduled to attend the ceremonies, and a thousand scientists from all over the world will meet to honor Pasteur and the work of the institute. The institute consists of three buildings which contain 68 laboratories inhabited by 218 scientists. They are many laboratory annexes throughout Paris, a large library, a hospital, a model monkey centre for experimental studies; and a farm near Paris. The Curie Cancer Center is an outgrowth of the institute, and there are branches in Indo-China, North Africa, Greece and Persia.
