Citrus Retarded By Cold Weather Central California to Ship Less Fruit This Year Than Last Season Central California will ship a thousand fewer cars of valencia oranges this season than were shipped last year; according to preliminary surveys made by representatives of the Mutual Orange Distributors. Preliminary estimates are that the tree crop will total around 4300 cars compared to a tree crop of 5862 cars last year. Owing to last November's cold snap, about 800 of these 4300 cars will be eliminated because of frost damage; and another 300 cars will be eliminated because of small size and low grade. This will leave 3200 cars of merchantable fruit. The sizes, too, are much smaller this year. On March 1 the average size was 250 per box. Last year on the same date the size was 194 to the box. February, 1939, was the coldest in 25 years and not only retarded the growth of the fruit but also interfered with usual early maturity. It is doubtful that the fruit will reach the minimum sugar content before March 23. Picking for export may not begin before that date. The percentage of elimination will be greater this year than last, when out of a tree crop of 5862 cars 2953 were shipped interstate; SPORTOPIX by RUSS McCOMB Fullerton junior college basketball followers bid a tumultuous farewell to the greatest cage star in the history of the school when Capt. Tom Keesey was removed in the final two minutes of Fullerton's 65 to 56 victory over Chaffey last Friday night for the Hornets' third straight eastern conference championship. More than a thousand Fullerton rooters, plus almost as many Chaffey supporters, stood and gave the popular, modest York, Pa., youngster a tremenduous ovation. The applause lasted until after Keesey had disappeared into the dressing rooms. Tom Keesey richly deserved the tribute which he received. For two years he has been the ace of a pair of great Fullerton squads. Tom's greatness wasn't confined to his spectacular basket-shooting ability; he was a splendid floor man, an inspirational leader, and a thorough gentleman. Probably the outstanding feat accomplished this year by Keesey was to establish a new national collegiate seasonal scoring record. By caging 28 points in the final February, 1939, was the coldest in 25 years and not only retarded the growth of the fruit but also interfered with usual early maturity. The percentage of elimination will be greater this year than last, when out of a tree crop of 5862 cars, 2953 were shipped interstate; 580 cars, intrastate; 968 cars, exported; and 468 cars were sold to the government for relief purposes, leaving 892 cars which went to by-products plants or were destroyed. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." This verse from Exodus constitutes the Golden Text in the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist. One of the Bible selections in the Lesson-Sermon presents these words of the Psalmist: "Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law... The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes... Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments... The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver... Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight." Passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, state: "It is the transgression of a belief of mortal mind, not of a law of matter horiz. of divine Mind, which causes the belief of sickness." "If man is governed by the law of divine Mind, his body is in submission to everlasting Life and Truth and Love." Sea feather, fund in offshore waters from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Carolines, actually are animals. Probably the outstanding feat accomplished this year by Keesey was to establish a new national collegiate seasonal scoring record. By caging 28 points in the final game of the season, Tom raised his total for 33 games to 501 points, surpassing the previous record of 477 digits established some two weeks ago by Rhode Island State's ace, Chet Jarowski. Keesey's average per game this season was 15.2 points. During nine conference and playoff contests, Tom caged 173 points for an average of 19.2. During his two years as a Hornet, Keesey played in 52 tilts, ringing up a grand total of 707 points, for an average of 13.6 points a game. He engaged in 17 conference and playoff frays, with a total point score of 266 digits, for an average of 15.6 markers a game. In addition to his national record, Keesey also holds the eastern conference game mark, having scored 33 points against Pomona Jaysee. Coaches of the junior college basketball teams throughout the state recently voted on an all-California Jaysee team. They named Keesey as one of the forwards. Tom was all-conference last year, and of course, will undoubtedly be a unanimous selection this year. Of the 52 contests in which he played as a Hornet, Keesey was on the loser's end on only 10 occasions. Fate robbed the Hornet star of one more honor. Fullerton went into the second game of the Chaffey playoff with a conference winning streak of 29 games, needing only a victory to complete three successive undefeated years. ASTHMA ASTHMA is one of the allergic diseases caused from a sensitivity of the bronchial membranes to pollen, animal eftuvia or protein. The tendency is INHERENT and the disease is not contagious. While rarely fatal, Asthma is most distressing, inconvenient and exhausting, and the attacks place an undue strain on the heart and nervous system. Asthmatic patients' major difficulty is EXHALING. The lining of the bronchial system has become irritated, and nature is trying to clear the air-passages of accumulated mucous. When the bronchial tubes and air-cells become congested, the one passage for air to the lower part of the lungs must be cleared, hence the spasmodic action of the tubes designated as ASTHMA. Sometimes an enlarged thymus gland, tumors that press on the windpipe, or a bad heart cause symptoms that are mistaken for Asthma. In children, especially ASTHMATIC attacks are often mistaken for croup or bronchial pneumonia.
