Phone 3519 THE PROGRESSIVE UNION PACIFIC ROAD OF THE STREAMLINERS AND THE CHALLENGERS "The Boy David" is Playhouse's Christmas Play Striking a note of importance seldom reached in western theatrical annals, "The Boy David." James M. Barrie's immortal play, comes, in its American premiere, to the Pasadena Community Playhouse on Tuesday evening, December 20. The story of David, through the pen of the late Barrie, carries full reverence in biblical significance, the brilliance of memorable scenes re-created and deals with those dramatic episodes in the young shepherd's life. Double meaning is cast upon "The Boy David" by its Yuletide dating. In addition to the regular evening performances there will be matinees on December 24, 28, 29, 30, and 31 to allow the very youngest playgoers the opportunity to better enjoy the story and scenes beloved by all. Gilmor Brown, assisted by Herschel Daugherty, directs the production. Robert Willey will be seen as the 17-year-old David, supported by a cast of 50 players. In the parks of Birmingham, England, pavilions have been added for the benefit of aged men, who are permitted to gather there to talk, or play cards, chess or dominoes. Secretary Marvin McIntyre, even before Washington in October, really rewarded last week, he gave to the railroad station with North Carolina's Governor Hoey the welcome the president of the United States. After becoming an LL.D. (for 16th time), Franklin Roosevelt made a speech in which he invoked his shade of Theodore Roosevelt in a fighting "liberal," exhorted U.S. youth to "go places" for democracy. Said he: "You undergraduates who see me for the first time have read our newspapers and heard on the that I am, at the very least, an advocate—a consorter with communists, a destroyer of the rich, a keeper of our ancient traditions. You think of me perhaps as the inventor of the economic royalist, the wicked utilities, of the money changers of the temple. You have heard for six years that was about to plunge the nation into war; that you and your little others would be sent to the body fields of battle in Europe; that I was driving the nation into bankruptcy, and that I breakfasted every morning on a dish of 'grilled millionaire.'" "Actually I am an exceedingly old mannered person—a practitioner of peace, both domestic and foreign, a believer in the capitalistic system, and for my breakfast devotee of scrambled eggs." "You have read that as a result balloting last November the general forces in the United States are on their way to the cemetery yet I ask you to remember that general forces in the United States have often been killed and buried with the inevitable result that short order they have come to be again with more strength than they had before." DOCTOR PROMOTED—WASHINGTON—Besides speaking at Chapel Hill last week, the resident also promoted his White House physician, Captain Ross Intire, to the rank of rear admiral and surgeon general in the U.S. navy. Many another president has eased White House naval, military and medical aides upstairs to high berths, often to the disgust of their ranking officers. Woodrow Wilson thus made Lieutenant Commander Cary Travers Grayson a rear admiral, and Warren Harding created bumbling old Charles Sawyer a brigadier general in the U.S. army medical reserve. In upping his friend and doctor to succeed the navy's retired Surgeon General Perceval Rossiter, Roosevelt promoted an able, modest eye-ear-nose-and-throat man. Far from loafing in his White House nook, Dr. McIntire has worked daily at the naval hospital in Washington, lectured regularly at the U.S. naval medical school.
