Santa Ana Next For of Anaheim
Still in a tie for second place in spite of their two-game losing streak, Anaheim Valencias invade the Santa Ana Municipal bowl tomorrow evening to meet Doc Smith's Stars for the second time this year and to close the second round of play in the National Niteball league.
Joe Cornelius' unpredictable crew played second-division ball against Brea last Friday and again against Huntington Beach Tuesday and as a result took two trimmings. Brea won, 5 to 2, by scoring five runs in the first inning after two were out. Four errors in the inning aided their cause. The Oilers rapped Rudy Herman and Ted Neja for 18 safeties to win 12 to 3.
Anaheim maintained its tie for second place, however, through the inability of San Bernardino to win in its last two starts. Whittier dumped the Ponies Friday night, 3 to 2, and Santa Ana scored another 3 to 2 victory over them Tuesday night. Anaheim and San Bernardino are now three games back of Huntington Beach.
Santa Ana is in fourth place by virtue of splitting two games. The Stars lost, 3 to 2, in 11 innings to the Oilers before beating the Ponies. The Stars lost Merle Hapes to Irvine this week.
Orange also split its two games, beating Irvine, 1 to 0, Friday and losing to Whittier, 5 to 2, Tuesday. It was Whittier's third straight win after 10 consecutive defeats. The Cubs won from Irvine in the ninth by registering their only hit off Ira
Lambert Files
W. T. Lambert, county auditor, today filed with the county clerk for re-election to succeed himself.
Because of the fact that his office has been conducted solely in the interest of the taxpayer and on many occasions has refused to approve for payment demands that were not legal or that tended towards loose and extravagant spending, Lambert has greatly increased his strength throughout the county.
"I have always considered that my first duty was the protection of the taxpayer and while it has not always been popular to do so, have had to refuse the payment of unjust claims to even my friends. If the majority of the Orange county taxpayers are in accord with my record I hope that they

Alterations Made By Penney Store
Extensive modernization and expansion have been completed by the J. C. Penney company store, 124 W. Center street; it was disclosed today by Charles Atwell manager. The alterations add to the attractiveness of the interior, lighting facilities and general convenience, as well as providing an opportunity to an expansion in stock.
Complete remodeling of the basement permitted the establishment of new departments for boys and girls wear and the bedding department. Several other departments were also brought downstairs from the main floor.
One of the features of the basement is an arrangement which will allow one of the wall cases to be moved to one side, thus opening up additional space for toyland during Christmas season.
New lighting fixtures have been installed on the main floor, adding greatly to the illumination at night.

Residents in the Buena Park sanitary district will shortly be called upon to vote upon a plan to construct a sewage disposal plant providing PWA officials approve plans which will be presented to them in the near future.
Welfare Department Activities
By Jack W. Snow, director of Orange county department of Social welfare
This is the fourth of a series of articles by Mr. Snow on various aspects of the relief problem in Orange county.
In addition to the county welfare department with its responsibility for unemployables, and for state relief administration and Works Progress administration, up to provide for employable persons, there are other pu- agencies and programs active in Orange county.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) is a well-known federal work relief program for physically fit young men between the ages of 17 and 23 who have dependent in addition to their care at camps, a cash allowance is provided, the larger part of which sent to the dependent relative his or her support. Enrollment handled by the welfare department in this county.
Another federal program is National Youth Administration (NYA). Two types of assistance are provided. The first is student aid which is administered by school authorities under the supervision of the county NYA representative to enable students partially finance their education. The second type of aid provides under this program is on the order of vocational training and w relief. The NYA band and NYA toy project which are widely known throughout the county examples of the latter type.

Supervisors Refuse Tax Cancellations
Request by the state veterans' welfare board for cancellation of taxes on a number of pieces of Orange county property was turned down this week by county supervisors on advice of District Attorney W. F. Menton.
Menton told the board that both Orange and other counties had been denying the applications for tax cancellation on grounds that if they were granted, several million dollars' worth of property throughout the state would be registered in the welfare board's name, resulting in huge losses in taxes.
Santa Anan Suicide by Carbon Monoxide
Despondent over ill health, Henry Meier, 32, ended his life by carbon monoxide gas at his home
Protests of Orange county boroughs against the wage rise last week by the county visors for re-location of the Ana canyon highway and Fe railroad, near the Prairie site, were registered with the county board. Visors explained they were less to make a change date.

The ships belong to the Mosvold Line (Norwegian) and Knutsen Line (Danish) respectively, both newcomers to this trade this season, adding six similar ships.
Due to its large volume and willingness to make firm bookings, the Orchard Fruit Growers Exchange has been able to bring a number of ships into the California citrus export trade this season. Exports of lus toranges, lemons and grapefruit for the season to July 1 amount practically two million boxes to almost 100 ports across the Atlantic Pacific, the Exchange export sales department reports.

Farm Security administra- a federal agency primarily used to make rehabilitation to marginal farm families. The loans are made with the expectation of repayment, this agency also makes occasional out- right relief grants in emergencies for subsistence purposes.
The county hospital is a public relief agency which provides medical care for needy persons.
Still active is the self-help cooperative movement in this county, although in a much more limited way than was the case several years ago. State and federal funds have been advanced, both as out- right grants and as loans with the expectation that members of the units would become at least partially self-supporting. The state is at present considering giving increased help to this program.
Veterans welfare is a wide field in itself. The county budget covers up the veterans welfare as a separate department, and the county budget covers administrative expense only. The amount of federal and state assistance going to county veterans is substantial, but it comes through special agencies and bureaus. The veterans welfare department serves chiefly as a coordination and service agency, with most emergency and other forms of indigent relief being handled through other agencies in the usual manner.
At least three Orange county municipalities maintain city welfare departments. These cities are Orange, Fullerton and Anaheim, and these agencies are active in giving emergency and occasional aid, especially to persons not eligible for other forms of public assistance. These municipal agencies also cooperate with other public agencies.

LABORERS PROTEST AGAINST WAGE RATE
Protests of Orange county laborers against the wage scale set to last week by the county supervisors for re-location of the Santa Ana canyon highway and Santa Ana railroad, near the Prado dam, were registered this week with the county board. Supervisors explained they were pawless to make a change at this rate.
The 60-cent an hour rate for common laborers was criticised as below standard. It was pointed out that common labor was granted a 75-cent rate on the aerial radio beacon project.
