County Fireworks Ban Recommended These awful firecrackers that explode like a key of dynamite will no longer be heard in Orange county if the board of supervisors and city councils in this area adopt the universal fireworks ordinance recommended recently by Fire Chief Frank Cocker of Newport Beach. The ordinance bans any salutes or firecrackers containing flash powder, fireworks using phosphorus or chlorate of potash. Aerial beams or pieces designed to rise from the ground and explode in the air are on the restricted list. The safe variety of fireworks are cap pistols and caps, sparklers and flares, flower pots or fountains. Mayor Mann Speaks at League Meeting Mayor Charles H. Mean of Anaheim, City Attorney L. W. Bledget of Santa Ana, and City Attorney Gordon X. Richmond of Orange were the principal speakers at last Thursday night's Orange County League of Municipalities meeting at Santa Ana. Mann, state president of the league, told the group of forthcoming legislation which the league members should be interested in. Blodget spoke on "The Historical Background of Cities," Richmond discussed the powers and limitations of councilmen and other city officials. In Seattle A GREAT HOTEL IN A GREAT CITY FROM $250 New Washington Hotel One of the largest construction jobs ever undertaken in California has been advertised for bidding by the United State bureau of reclamation. The bureau has announced that bids for building giant Shasta dam and power plant on the upper Sacramento river near Redding will be opened June 1 at the Central Valley project office in Sacramento. Shasta dam will be the second largest concrete dam in the world, exceeded in height only by Boulder dam on the Colorado river and exceeded in mass only by Grand Coulee, under construction on the Columbia river. Boulder and Grand Coulee are bureau of reclamation projects. Commissioner of Reclamation John C. Page, in the call for bids, announced the work will include excavating about 3,215,000 cubic yards of earth and rock to prepare a foundation for the dam; placing other items include over 1,000 cubic yards of rock and ear fills, 1,500,000 cubic feet of paving grouting, 370,000 linear feet of electrical conduit and 160 linear feet of electrical cable. Shasta dam will rise 560 feet from the lowest foundation to the top—higher than the tallest scrubbers of San Francisco and Angeles—and will be about 3 feet, or almost two-thirds of mile, long on the crest. It be 580 feet thick at the base. The dam will back up the waters of three rivers—the Salmo, Pit and McCloud—a distance of 35 miles, to create aervation reservoir with a storage capacity of 4,500,000 acres which will be used for multiple benefits of improved irrigation flood control, navigation, saline repulsion, and power generation.
