STATE OF CALIFORNIA.) (ss. COUNTY OF ORANGE.) On this 18th day of February A.D., 1938, before me a Notary Public in and for said county and state, residing therein, duly commissioned and sworn, personally appeared F. D. Johnson and William Mount known to me to be the persons whose names are subscribed to the within instrument and acknowledged to me that they executed the same. Testifying before a senate investigating committee in Washington recently, Joseph Curran, president of the CIO National Maritime union, boldly came to the defense of communism, although denying that he is a communist. Declared Curran: "The communists have done more for the workers of the in-dustries of the country than any of the so-called and self-appointed liberal agencies existent to date." Later, the CIO leader again as founded the senate investigator with the frank admission that his union did not "inquire into the political beliefs" of its officers—tacit admission, apparently, of the truth of recent charges that communists have seized the reins in many of the CIO unions. This much can be said for Curran's testimony. He was found where others have been evasive And American workers, having read his testimony, at least know which way the wind is blowing If they find radical agitators "boring from within" and seeking control of their unions, they need not be surprised, for the welcome sign has been hung out and the door thrown open. But American workers, if they have followed the course of communism in Soviet Russia, may well question the truth of Curran's statement that the communists "have done more for the workers than any other agency." In Russia, today, Stalin holds the power of life and death over rich and poor alike; in Russia, workers have bartered their freedom for the promise of security—and no have neither. In Russia, workers work for wages that will not be paid. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my official seal the day and year in this certificate first above written. FORREST F. FOWLER, Notary public in and for Said County and State. My Commission expires 7-17-1940. Feb. 24, Mar. 3-10-17, 1938. GEORGE H. TOBIAS, Commissioner Appointee by said Court. Dated: February 17th, 1938. B. Z. McKINNEY, Santa Ana, California, Attorney for Plaintiff. 3/3-10-17 ANAHEIM GAZETTE CORNER LOR By Agricultural Corona of the country than any called and self-appointed agencies existent to date." the CIO leader again asssisted the senate investigators frank admission that his did not "inquire into the beliefs" of its officers—a mission, apparently, of the recent charges that comhave seized the reins in the CIO unions. much can be said for Curristimony. He was frank others have been evasive, American workers, having testimony, at least know way the wind is blowing. and radical agitators "borwithin" and seeking conheir unions, they need not risen, for the welcome sign hung out and the door open. American workers, if they allowed the course of comin Soviet Russia, may well be the truth of Curran's that that the communists one more for the workers" by other agency. In Rustany, Stalin holds the power and death over rich and like; in Russia, workers burtered their freedom for promise of security—and now either. In Russia, workers or wages that will not buy common necessities—and face the choice of swallowing their pride and continuing in serfdom, or facing trial in a Stalin-controlled court that makes a mockery of justice and that silences all complaints before the firing squad. American workers—both on the farms and in the cities—need to take a look at Russia when they hear some of their leaders prate of the glories of communism. For the funds for communist agitation in America come from Russia; the direction of the communist movement comes from Russia. And Russia, instead of being the workers' state it has been pictured, is finally emerging in its true colors—a fascist state, dominated by dictatorship more ruthless than anything yet devised by Hitler or Mussolini. Some of the "direct action" methods of the communists already have appeared in many of the labor disputes incited by radical trouble-makers in America. "Beef squads" and thugs have been hired to intimidate American workmen who resisted needless strikes and class warfare. Homes have been bombed; plants terrorized. Men who objected have found that the boss of the union hiring hall had absolute power to say whether they should work or remain idle. Farmers have learned something of the arrogance of radical despots when their crops have rotted waiting for ships; when they have been refused the right to unload their own trucks and handle their own produce in city markets; when they have been threatened with ruin through the cry of "hot cargo" because they refused to accede to arbitrary demands that meant heavy losses and possible bankruptcy. But California farmers, fortunately, have refused to be browbeaten and have made considerable progress. QUESTIONS COLLEGE SCIENCE—First Year 1—Can animals hear sounds inaudible to man?
