Southern Pacific today announced plans to operate in its own name store-door pickup and delivery service now performed by Pacific Motor Transport company.
Southern Pacific company, as part of its progressive program since early in 1929, has been giving to the shipping public a store-door pickup and delivery service for their less-than-car load traffic. On interstate traffic this service has been provided directly in the name of Southern Pacific company. For intrastate traffic, this service has been provided in the name of Southern Pacific's wholly owned subsidiary, Pacific Motor Transport company.
Effective January 1, 1938, or as soon thereafter as possible all of the service, both interstate and intrastate, will be given directly in the name of Southern Pacific. Store-door rates and service themselves will remain unchanged, the only change being in the name. This change is being made to avoid in the future inconvenience to shippers of using different tariffs and billing documents for their interstate traffic and intrastate traffic.
The Pacific Motor Transport company was established in 1929 as an experiment to perform store-door pickup and delivery service for the railroad within the state of California.
During the early days of the experiment the merchandise freight was transported between stations by regular freight trains after having been first picked up at the shipper's store by railroad operated trucks. At destination it was delivered to the consignee's store door by railroad operated trucks. The service became so popular that the Southern Pacific company began transporting this merchandise traffic in fast freight trains. On such train is that called "The Overnight" operating between San Francisco and Los Angeles, which celebrated its second birthday this month. Since its inception similar operations have been established on the Southern Pacific within the states of Oregon, Nevada and Arizona. Similarly, the Southern Pacific

The Pacific Motor Trucking company, also a wholly owned subsidiary of the Southern Pacific company, is the operating company that performs the truck service in coordination with train service. This company will remain unchanged and will continue to perform the truck service for Southern Pacific.
Plans are being rapidly completed, and it is hoped that this service will be operated under the name of the Southern Pacific by the first of next year, or shortly thereafter.

Welfare Budget For County High
Orange county's welfare budget for the current fiscal year is greater by 141 per cent, or $822,794 than its actual expenditures for relief purposes, during the preceding year, according to a study of 1937-38 budget allowances of California counties for welfare, made public by California Taxpayers' association. The county plans to spend $1,407,408 for aid to the needy aged, blind, and orphans, and for the care of county indigents, compared with $584,614 during 1936-37, the association found.
Budget allowances for the needy aged amount to $914,525, compared with last year's expenditures of $321,522; an allowance of $35,922 has been set up for the blind, compared to expenditures of $16,534 during the preceding year; $112,023 is budgeted for orphan aid, where $61,713 was spent last year; while aid to county indigents, the so-called "unemployables," is estimated at $229,-350 compared with expenditures of $113,949 in 1936-37. The budget allows $115,588 for administrative expense, compared with $70,896 for the purpose last year, the association found.
"The most of aid for aged, blind, and orphans is divided between the federal, state and county governments. This fact," the association pointed out, "gives many persons the easy feeling that they are escaping most of the cost. This is very far from the truth. California pays about a dollar and a half into the federal treasury for every dollar that comes back in federal grants. Contributions

Winter Check-Up of Automobile Urged
Time for the autumn checkup of the family automobile has arrived. According to E. R. McCoy, local Ford dealer, it's time to get the old car in shape for the winter driving ahead.
"The modern motor car does not need very elaborate preparation for cold weather," said McCoy "but if the few things necessary are done now, it will probably save a good deal of bother and inconvenience later on."
"It is advisable now or within the next week or two to have the crankcase drained and lighter oil for winter use put in. This will relieve the battery of some of the strain of starting on cold mornings, and also will insure good lubrication of the motor right from the time it is started. It is also wise to have the battery thoroughly checked and the generator charging rate set for winter requirements."
"A thorough job of chassis lubrication should be done, and the lubricant in the transmission and rear end changed to the proper lighter grade for winter use."
Negect Causes Holiday Mishaps
Christmas shopping and wet weather combine to make November and December the most dangerous months of the year.
Although the holiday season usually is associated with happiness, tragedy often strikes as the result of heavy street traffic.
Taxes Delinquent Starting Sunday
First installment of county taxes for this year becomes delinquent next Sunday, reminds County Tax Collector J. C. Lamb. The tax collector's office will remain open from 8 o'clock in the morning to 5 o'clock in the evening on Saturday.
In reminding the public that taxes become delinquent next Sunday Lamb urged that those paying taxes do so as early as possible so as to avoid delay at the office. He requests that checks be made out before hand or that exact change be brought to the office. He also asks that the tax bill be brought to facilitate service.
Quarters at the tax collector's office are small, necessitating a small staff of clerks. These clerks are courteous and efficient, however, Lamb said.
PRESERVING PERISHABLES
It is estimated that six million tons of ice are used every year on American railroads to preserve perishable foods being transported to market. More than 2,300 ice stations are used to serve the railroads.
Urges Abandonment of "Class Spending"
Federal spending for unemployment and other forms of government assistance is seriously endangering the American political and economic system. General Hugh S. Johnson told the Academy of Political Science recently.
He characterized such spending as "the most vicious departure in our history from our constitution and traditions." He pointed out that the per capita tax has risen from $1.09 a year in revolutionary times to $70 a year now.
"The government has gone in for class spending," he declared, "and thus the class receiving the benefits comes to constitute a vested interest."
Carloadings Lower During Past Week
Santa Fe system carloadings for the week ending Nov. 27 were 20,353 compared to 21,263 for the same week last years. Received from connections 5,276 compared to 6,317 for the same week last year.
Total cars moved 25,629 compared to 27,580 for the same week in 1936. Santa Fe handled a total of 29,083 in the preceding week this year.
Neglect Causes Holiday Mishaps
Christmas shopping and wet weather combine to make November and December the most dangerous months of the year.
Although the holiday season usually is associated with happiness, tragedy often strikes as the result of heavy street traffic and pedestrian movement, warns the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Approximately 24 per cent of all 1936 Los Angeles county traffic fatalities occurred in the last two months of the year. Largely responsible for the heavy death toll was the increase of accidents involving pedestrians, the motorists' organization pointed out.
Increased alertness and obedience to law on the part of both motorists and pedestrians are needed if any reduction in holiday accidents is to be accomplished.
Pedestrians are urged to look both ways before crossing a street. Avoid jaywalking and stay inside of pedestrian lanes. In wet weather play safe and make greater allowances for stopping distances required by vehicles on the slick streets.
Motorist and pedestrian alike can do his part by remembering that the Christmas spirit should be radiated, not consumed.
