Agricultural Extension Service In County Reports Year's Activities
The agricultural extension service in Orange county this week submitted its 1937 annual report to the college of agriculture, Berkeley, and to the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Washington, which institutions it represents in this county. The current report covers the twentieth year of extension service activities in Orange county, according to Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg, during which time thousands of demonstrations and agricultural meetings have been held that have had more or less influence on the farm practices of most of the 6,000 farms in this area.
The past year was the banner year in extent of demonstrations, farm tours, and other contracts with the farmers and farm homes, based on the statistical data reported for the year. The records required by federal department of agriculture show that the farm advisor staff held 170 demonstrations during the past year with an attendance of 11,247. Besides the demonstrations, 19 farm tours, 97 project meetings, 12 institutes and field days; 58 farm center meetings and 299 other meetings were participated in with a total of 39,557 people attending.
Other activities involved in the agricultural extension program during the year included 2,294 requested farm visits, 6,405 personal calls at the office for agricultural information, 11,292 bulletins issued, 6,854 letters written and 52 farm radio broadcasts given.
The report emphasized the valuable contribution by over practices in the county. Home demonstration activities were carried on in cooperation with eight county groups in the county, and the 4-H program through 22 junior agricultural and home economics clubs in the rural districts.
The broad scope of the extension program is evidenced by the cooperating farm crop groups in the county, including citrus, walnuts, avocados, field crops, truck crops, dairy, poultry, livestock, lima beans, and sugar beets. The marketing programs, the production cost analyses of the principal Orange county crops, agricultural conservation, soil erosion control, orchard management, livestock improvement and many other projects which have engaged the farm advisor's staff, are described in the report.
A twentieth anniversary bulletin has recently been issued by the Orange county office and is available to those interested upon request.

ARE COMMONLY CREDITED TO IT
TODAY, an amazing, new reducing method is sweeping the country. A method which offers at last, a way to take off ugly fat without suffering a hungry moment—and without taking strenuous exercises or drugs. A method which increases physical and mental energy as excess weight disappears.
Under the direction of the eminent Dr. Damrau of New York, a number of people who were gaining at the rate of 1½ pounds a month, followed this remarkable method. And the average loss registered was 7 pounds per person in a single month. Consider that carefully.
This Is All You Do
This sensational reducing method simply calls for this: Mix ¼ of a glass of Welch's Grape Juice, with ¼ of a glass of water, and drink before each meal—and at bedtime. Then eat sensibly, and this is what happens.
First, Welch's Grape Juice satisfies your craving for rich, sweet foods. You have less desire to over-eat fattening foods—yet you do feel comfortably satisfied.
Second, the grape sugar in Welch's is quickly burned up—producing vital energy. And, most important, helps nature to consume excess fat.
Third, the juice has an alkalizing effect on the system which any doctor will tell you is highly beneficial.
This is why weight is not only lost naturally and safely—often at the rate of 7 pounds a month, or more—but why you feel so much better and stronger as your ugly fat disappears.
Only One Thing to Watch
In following this proved, SAFE way to lose ugly fat—eat sensibly—and be sure to use Welch's pure, aged, unadulterated full-strength grape juice. Made from the finest grapes grown. No water added; no artificial coloring. Good Housekeeping approved. Insist upon the genuine Welch's Grape Juice for the results you want.

WATCH YOUR HUSBAND'S WEIGHT
Insurance Companies warn about the dangers of overweight. For they have definitely proved that overweight places too much of a load on the heart, is often associated with such diseases as diabetes and kidney trouble—and shortens the normal span of life. Don't allow your husband to become overweight. Suggest this amazingly easy, pleasant, safe Welch way to reduce.
"Irene Rich, over 40, weighs the same as she did at 16. She says, 'Eat Sensibly—Drink Welch's Grape Juice.'"

Racketeering by Labor Is Scored
Legislation to make labor unions "amenable to the laws which govern business generally," and to empower municipal, state or federal authorities to supervise the funds of all unions has been urged in New York by a special "Rackets Grand Jury" after a seven months' investigation.
The jury's presentment included a summary of investigation of labor racketeering, and said in this connection:
"We are not unmindful of the fact that, frequently, unscrupulous labor leaders disregard not only the rights of the employer but the freedom of will of the men whom they purport to help. These conditions must be rectified, as they are costly alike to both industry and labor, and can, conceivably, unless checked, encompass their ruin.
"If local authorities remain inactive, not only invasion of private property, but the individual's freedom of action in making his livelihood is outraged by such official action. Therefore, government supervision, municipal, state or federal, must be exercised over the funds and disbursements of all unions in order to protect the employees and the citizenry at large, and most of all, appropriate legislation should be enacted to make such parties amenable to the laws which govern business generally."

As the Christmas season approaches, some of the hardness of life will go out of it—temporarily, at least.
The spirit of Yuletide is: "Peace on earth; goodwill toward men!"
And for some happy reason, which wordly standards fail to explain, grimness will give way to cheerfulness; generosity will triumph over selfishness. There will be less bigotry and bitterness; more of understanding and kindliness.
The brotherhood of man—for a time—will become a reality!
Neighbors will suddenly become neighborly. Farmers will work far into the night, uncomplainingly, to meet the holiday demand for staples and luxuries. Bosses, after eleven months of frowning and worrying, will finally unbind—and admit pride in their workers. And workers, forgetting the preachments of their high-pressure organizers, will put aside the idea (at least for a time) that all bosses are enemies—and confess to heresy that "the old man is a pretty good guy at that!" On Christmas eve, Japanese and Chinese soldiers—if they follow the time-honored custom of warriors—will let up a bit on their firing and shout time-honored pleasantries over the barriers. And if John L. Lewis and William A. Green happen to come face to face, they will undoubted whether he be farmer; or industrialist; to himself: "Am I doing my workers?" And it time for the worker to outside influences, do thinking, and ask: "A fair to my employer?"

It is well, in their period of contemplation, to study "cause and effect"; to weigh the course of contemporary history—to determine what brought Russia to Communism; what brought Germany and Italy to Fascism.
In Russia, abuses by the czars gave birth to revolution and the soviet state. Understanding of the cruel despotism and object poverty of the people of Russia during that era will bring understanding of the sudden shift to Communism—even to loyal Americans who can see only bitter disillusionment and social disaster in the experiment. But America was born free; has had no czars; has more of, plenty for all classes than any other nation in the world. America has no spur to plunge, in despair, into Communism!
But what of the other extreme—Fascism, a master state and a servant people? How did this come about in Germany and Italy? It came about with the destruction of the hard-working,tax-paying, empire-building "middle-class!" Workers, suddenly dominant, proved unequal to the re-
A-1 Sauce Receives Approval of Cooks
Since its introduction here more than 20 years ago, A-1 Sauce—a Heublein product—has become almost a necessity in every well-ordered home, hotel and restaurant. Through its unique qualities it has built up and enjoyed the constantly increasing approval of the American public.
A-1 Sauce will be one of the prominent food products demonstrated at the cooking school. Its uses on the table and in the kitchen are almost unlimited—served with all meats, fish, fowl, game, beans, cheese dishes, tomato juice and many other foods. A-1 Sauce is indispensable as the proper flavoring for soups, gravies, meat loaves, cocktail sauces, etc.

suffered; dictatorships are profitable only to dictators. And Germany and Italy today, in common with Russia, are disillusioned nations.
At Christmas, when the spirit of "live and let live" is in the atmosphere, perhaps we should think of that. Perhaps we should try to give and take and live together in goodwill and tolerant understanding. Perhaps we should count what we have and be grateful to the destiny that gave us free America!
Industries Plan Code of Ethics
The whole field of the present business and industrial cycle will be explored at the meeting this month of the Congress of American Industry, sponsored by the National Association of Manufacturers.
In issuing the call for the congress sessions, William B. Warner president of the association, announced that because of the importance of the discussions as they relate to the present situation of business, the meeting would embrace five, instead of the customary four, days.
Outstanding in the congress program will be consideration of a code of business ethics and standards to be submitted for adoption. It is designed as a "yardstick" for the dealings and relations of business with customers, suppliers, employees, creditors, stockholders, competitors, Government and local communities.
