Riutcel-Smith Company Traces History Back To Pioneer Store Riutcel-Smith furniture store is the direct descendant of the old-cat furniture business in Anaheim and has the added distinction of conducting its business at the same location the original store was established. The business was established in 1871 by Ferdinand A. Backs and his brother, Joseph M. Backs, in a building at the corner of Los Angeles and Chartres streets. For 67 years residents of Anaheim have been able to purchase high grade furniture at that location. The Backs brothers had been in business seven years when they constructed the building now occupied by Riutcel-Smith company. The partnership between the brothers was dissolved in 1890, with F. A. Backs remaining in the original location and J. M. Backs opening his separate business in a building one-half block south. Twenty-two years later Backs sold the establishment to the firm of Johnson and Squires who were in business here only a short time before selling to Albert Graham. In 1921 Graham disposed of the business, selling to A. C. Riutcel Charles H. Mann, Nash dealer. That record, coupled with the fact that Mann is mayor of the city of Anaheim and president of the League of California Municipalities makes the dealer one of Anaheim's outstanding residents. Mann has been a resident of Orange Co. since 1893 when he came to Buena Park. Eleven years later he moved to Anaheim and established an automobile sales business, handling the now almost unrecalled Duro automobile. At that time there was one other automobile agency in Anaheim and only two or three in Santa Ana. Mann established his business in a garage located in the 200 block on North Los Angeles street, later moving to the 100 block on East Center street when he consolidated with the Beebe-Weisel company, farm implement dealers. The firm moved in 1912 to 210 S. Los Angeles street which is the present location of the Mann garage. Mann has operated the business alone since 1916. The service department has the reputation among county garages and being one of the best. It is Mann's claim that his garage has a larger and more varied supply of tools and servicing equipment than any other shop in Anaheim. The new Nash automobiles were introduced last week and are now being shown at Mann's establishment. Mann has always been actively identified in civic affairs of Anaheim and Orange county. He is now serving for the second time on the city council and has been chairman of the board and mayor of Anaheim since his re-election several years ago. Several years ago he served as a member of school board. After having been active in the Orange County League of Municipalities Mann was elected to the board of directors of the state league. He served a term as director, was then elected vice president and this fall was elevated to the presidency of the organization which represents almost all of the state municipalities. Activities of the Anaheim chamber of commerce are being-guided this year by Harry C. Arthur, Sr., president, and George W. Reid, secretary. The organization's civic banquet in September was an outstanding success. EARLY - DAY GROCERY STORE A. T. Wallop's grocery store was located on the northeast corner of Center and Los Angeles streets when this picture was taken in 1886. It was later moved one lot north and made way for a brick building which now occupies the corner. Reading from left to right the picture shows A. T. Wallop, William T.
