Catholic Church History Traces Back to Early Days of Anaheim History of the Catholic church in Anaheim dates back 76 years to 1860, when San Antonio church was dedicated on April 29. This church was located at what is now Yorba. It was the first Catholic church founded in the county, exclusive of the old Spanish missions. About the same time Rt. Rev. Peter Verdaguer, parish priest of Old Mission church in Los Angeles visited the colony of Anaheim from time to time, with services usually being held at the home of the late Mrs. Theo. Rimpau at the corner of Palm and Broadway. A short-time later services were held in the school building at Center and Los Angeles, after which a small church was erected on lots donated by the Anaheim Water company. The first mission was preached in Anaheim in 1870 by Father Weininger. In 1875 Father Victor Forin, first resident priest, renovated the church thoroughly and ten years later, during the administration of Father P. Hawe, a tower was added and a priest's residence built. This edifice was used continuously until 1902 when the parish, with the Rev. F. J. Dubbel as pastor, erected a new building at the corner of Palm and Center streets. The cornerstone to the church was laid on September 21, 1902, by Rt. Rev. Bishop Montgomery. Additions in the form of east and west wings were built in 1919, shortly after Rev. Patrick Browne assumed charge of the parish. Organizations of St. Boniface church include the Altar society, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1154, Young Ladies' Institute No. 109, Study club, Holy Name society, St. Boniface Parent-Teachers association and the newly organized Newman club at Anaheim union high school. Father Browne passed away February 25, 1937, after serving the parish 18 years. The requiem solemn mass was attended by Archbishop John J. Cantwell and many priests from the entire diocese. Father Charles O'Carroll, assistant pastor, then carried on the affairs of the parish until the present pastor and his assistants were named. In April Father Henry Gross became pastor, with Father Charles Nevin and Father John Quatannens as assistants. FIRST CATHOLIC CHURCH Father P. Upon completion the interior was redecorated and necessary fixtures purchased. No change has been made in the church building since then, except to install an organ in 1929. The Parish hall was built in 1920 on the ground where the old church and the original parish house had stood. The present rectory was built in 1911. Three schools are affiliated with the church; St. Boniface Parochial school, St. Catherine's Military school and Marywood Central Catholic high school. St. Catherine's school was founded in 1889 by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Mission San Jose in response to an appeal sent by Father Stoetters. Both boys and girls were admitted for many years, but in 1923 it became a military school. St. Boniface Parochial school was first opened September 15, 1930, with the dedication ceremony being held in December. The school has grown rapidly since its founding and now has an enrollment of 215 pupils. Marywood high school was opened in 1934 on the campus of what had been St. Joseph's academy. The academy had been built and opened in 1912 and was under the direction of the Dominican Sisters of Cuba for many years. It also served as parochial school for the St. Boniface parish for some time. Marywood is a high school for girls of Orange county and is conducted by the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods in Indiana. It continues the work of the parochial school. The latest methods of quick-freezing fruits and vegetables for market will be demonstrated at the 1939 World's Fair in San Francisco. The first Catholic church of Anaheim was built in the 70's shown in the above picture. The church is now in a large at the corner of Center and Palm streets and includes a parish school and parish hall.
