Elks Lodge of Anaheim Founded In 1917; Now Has 521 Members On April 17, 1917, the Anaheim lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was founded by a group of Elks, residents of north Orange county and mostly members of the Santa Ana lodge. The institution ceremony, which featured an all day barbecue was held in a huge tent and attended approximately 3000 members of the order as guests. Officers of the Santa Ana lodge were in charge. Judge Homer G. Ames was installed exalted ruler. Other officers included Herman P. Noll, Thos. L. McFodden, W. W. Davis, J. A. Fay, M. C. Goff, F. A. Backs, Jr., and E. N. Gage. Trustees were M. W. Martenet, Wm. Schumacher and D. Jessurum. For the first three years meetings were held in club rooms of the Anaheim Masons. Then for a year they met at the Fullerton club in Fallerton. In 1921 the beautiful home on North Los Angeles St. was completed and occupied. Anaheim lodge has gained a reputation among 'Elks lodges as the lodge that does things. Responsible for this was the old Anaheim Elks ball team that won state championships for several years, the drum and bugle corps that has won the state championship for three consecutive years and the national championship in 1936, and the glee club that takes a leading part in all activities. For the past three years the glee club has staged annual shows for Christmas charity and they recently won second place in the state competition for Elks glee clubs. Members of the lodge now number 521 and the current officers are as follows: Exalted Ruler Frank Mattox, Esteemed Leading Knight A. H. Deazley, Esteemed Loyal Knight Clyde Bruce, Esteemed Lecturing Knight Ray Van Wagoner, Esquire C. L. Larsen, Treasurer Harry Ray, Chapain George Henry, Inner Guard Louis Jacobsen, Tiler Wm. Bielefeldt, Secretary Joe Van Wagoner, Trustees A. H. T. Osborne, Lawrence Kelly, George Holden, A. D. Yost, and Werner Walter and Club Manager John Morgan. HOME OF ELKS LODGE V. F.W.O.F. In founding his store, Penney proceeded on the assumption that buying direct from the manufacturer and handling only quality merchandise would enable him to sell at lower prices and yet build a profitable business. This contention proved correct and the J. C. Penney company has grown until it now has 1524 stores all of which are in the United States. California has 128 Penney stores and there are 62 in southern California. The Anaheim store was established by the J. C. Penney company in 1923 at the location now occupied by the Anaheim furniture store. Lewis was appointed manager. About three years ago the store was moved to its present location at 124 W. Center street where it occupies a large space on the ground floor and also has a basement. J. C. Penney, the founder, is at the present time chairman of the board of directors of the concern. E. C. Sams is the president of the company. Two offices are maintained by the concern, the head Beverage Company is Growing Concern The only manufacturers of carbonated soft drinks in Anaheim is the Anaheim Beverage company, which is located at 404 S. Claudina street by T. E. Cundiff. The company manufactures Gusher brand beverages and features Star Cola. Anaheim Beverage company has grown rapidly in the past few years. It has many dealers handling its products both in Anaheim and in other cities of southern California. Anaheim Furniture Store Progressive C. B. Ralston started the Anaheim furniture store a little more than two years ago. His purpose was "to supply quality furniture at prices which were less than the same quality could be purchased elsewhere." So big has the business grown that Ralston recently went into partnership with Lee Morris. Anaheim furniture store is exclusive dealers for Buck gas ranges, Leonard refrigerators which are manufactured by one of the oldest refrigeration companies in the world, Standard furniture and Sealy mattresses. In the three years that the post has been in existence in Anaheim the Veterans of Foreign Wars has become one of the most active men's organizations in the city. Other officers the first year were Thomas Hawkins, junior vice commander; George Miller, quartermaster; James W. Roberts, adjutant; Harry Warton, post advocate; Viggo Mallin, chaplain; Eddis O. Two offices are maintained by the concern, the head office being in New York city and the other in St. Louis. Warehouses of the company are also located in New York. Lewis was followed as manager of the Anaheim store by Ed Keath, who in turn was succeeded last spring by Charles Atwell. Merle R. Strand is assistant manager of the store here. Both Atwell and Strand are active in civic affairs. All employees of the company here are residents of Anaheim and are likewise members of civic organizations. Modjeska Frequent Visitor in Anaheim Madame Modjeska was one of the greatest tragediennes on the American stage. Her portrayal of "Magda" showed wonderful ability. Up until her demise Modjeska made her home, with her husband Count Bozenta, at a mountain vil-ler she established up in the Santiago canyon. Always when in Anaheim she was the guest of Mrs. A. Langenberger who had a beautiful home and garden where the Anaheim park is located. During her visits here Mabel Langenberger would take Modjeska for a ride through the city streets in a two-wheeled cart drawn by a pretty pinto shetland pony. The late Plez James was president and George Hoar cashier. The bank was forced to close its doors owing to the fact some of the securities could be converted into ready cash, meeting of depositors was called in the old Kroeger hall and Jan asked for 60 days' time to call the money loaned. His request was granted, but he failed to cure the money and the bank closed. Had he asked for longer time he would have weeded the storm. James had the confidence of people. However, he was ruined financially. One night an indepositor called at his home threatened his life. Fred Gooden and E. O. Lane, co-legates to county council; Georgetown E. Miller and V. P.
