White Temple Is Growing Church
Methodist Denomination Has Long History in Anaheim Rev. Swenerton Pastor
Methodism in Anaheim knew the hardships incident to early beginnings. As early as 1875 Anaheim, Orange, and perhaps other points were visited by a "Circuit Rider" the Rev. J. M. Campbell and Rev. Cowan. This was the Los Nietos circuit.
The real beginning came on September 10th, 1887, when the Rev. D. O. Chamberlayne held the first service of his pastorate in what is now the "Roberts apartments" on the corner of Lemon and Center streets.
This first minister bent to the task of church construction. The lot was secured on South Philadelphia street near Center and with his own hands, using the planing mill given by T. S. Grimshaw, aided by a number of men who came to his aid, a spired and steepled church 26 feet wide and 52 feet long with a 65 foot steeple was completed in 1889.
The first money given towards the enterprise was donated by Sheldon Littlefield who was later postmaster at Anaheim and whose daughter, Mrs. Eva Boyd lives on South Olive street. The pastor's invalid wife, Mrs. D. O. Chamberlayne, sold her much prized piano in order to purchase a bell for the tower. The building's interior was furnished with chairs and benches varying in size, color and comfort for the congregation.

FIRST METHODIST CHURCH
The above picture shows the first Methodist church built in Anaheim. This structure was built about 40 years ago. It has since been replaced by a large edifice located at Broadway and Philadelphia streets and is now known as the White Temple church.
The Epworth League was a 20th century organization. It is an agency for the spiritual life of the youth of the church.
The "Wellman High" League, so named in honor of Missionaries Coe and Esther Wellman, presents an expenditure of $90,000. The bungalow cottage, purchased by the church, adjoins the property on the east, and is used by the high school department of the church.
The latest building project was dedicated in September 1930 and is located north of the main building. The exterior finish corresponds to the architecture of the church. It is 26 feet by 54 feet and represents an expenditure of $2,000.

During the pastorate of Rev. George Haffen extensive improvements were made. An addition 16 by 24 was built, then another extension of 12 by 12. New furnishings were provided for the interior in modern style and appointment with oak finished pews, electric lights, and other luxuries. On June 10, 1908, John L. Pitner, presiding elder of San Diego district, rededicated the re-constructed church. There was no home for the pastor until the parsonage cottage was built, under the leadership and pastorate of the Rev. Bede A. Johnson. It stood beside the little white church.
The Woman's Home Missionary society was organized in 1903 with Mrs. M. L. Scribner president. Two young people who are the products of this church are serving as missionaries—Coe R. Wellman in Porto Rico, and Marguerite Twinem in China, who is now home on furlough.
The Ladies' Aid society, long unorganized and unofficered, was ever alert and ready for every emergency. They cleared windows and floors of the church and parsonage, gave dinners, held bazaars, and always brought up the annual deficit.
The Epworth League was a 20th century organization. It is an agency for the spiritual life of the youth of the church.
The "Wellman High" League, so named in honor of Missionaries Coe and Esther Wellman, is composed of high school boys and girls. Miss Laura Gene Frantz is the counsellor of this group.
The junior church has been a power of life and character development of youth between the ages of seven and 14. It was organized in 1926 under the direction of Mrs. E. A. Collins.
The church school has been and is the greatest organized power from the beginning. Superintendents of the church school have been M. L. Scribner, P. H. Krick, F. P. Joyne, Geo. M. Tedrick, who served 17 years, P. W. Mathis, serving 12 years, and the present superintendent L. P. Nichols.
The present "White Temple" became the dream of Rev. Harry W. White, but was the achievement of his successor, Rev. J. F. Humphrey. During his pastorate the parsonage at 506 E. Center Street, was purchased and paid for.
The present church structure was dedicated April 11, 1920, by Bishop A. W. Leonard and represeents an expenditure of $90,000.

The latest building project was dedicated in September 1930 and is located north of the main building. The exterior finish corresponds to the architecture of the church. It is 26 feet by 54 feet and represents an expenditure of $2,000 for building material. The labor was donated by the Men's Bible class and is used by that class under the leadership of M. A. Gauer.
As far as is known, only one charter member of the church still lives—Mrs. G. W. Bailey, mother of Mrs. Henry Kuchel, who is now 87 years old and lives in Arizona. The present pastor, Dr. R. Kells Swenerton, is entering upon his second year at White Temple.

Military School Founded In 1889
Established in 1889, St. Catherine's Military school has grown up in response to a very definite and insistent demand—the demand for a school planned and conducted to meet the needs of young boys between the ages of 5 and 15 years. The Sisters of the Order of St. Dominic have been in constant charge of the school since its founding.
St. Catherine's was established as a military school in 1923 after having served until that time as a school for both boys and girls. Three years ago Lieut. Charles A. Schmitt was named commandant.
Of the 162 boys who enrolled at the school this fall many are from outside the state. Boys are attending the school whose homes are in Venezuela, England, Equador, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama and New Zealand as well as New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Idaho, Arizona and Colorado.
The modern plant today consists of boys' chapel, offices, large airy dormitories and classrooms, ample playground facilities, and one of the finest all-tile swimming pools in the state.
Drill Sunday programs are arranged by the cadet battalion, at which time the cadets take pride in showing their school and drill formations to parents and friends.
The school is recognized by the adjutant general's department of the state of California. Among the army officers who have served as reviewing officers are General George D. Moore, U.S.A. retired, Col. H. W. Williams, C.A.C., and Col. A.J French, C.A.C.
Through a well balanced religious, moral, mental and physical training the cadets have the basic habits and traits of good citizenship. Classes are held for students from the first grade through the ninth grade.
Groves are Studied by Horticulturists
Forty-five horticulturists in training at the division of subtropical horticulture, U.C.L.A., were guests of Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg last Friday on an orchard tour through the fruit districts of Orange county. Prof. R.W. Hodgson, head of the horticultural division, accompanied the group.
