This Week Marks Fifteenth Year For Metropolitan Water District
Progress reports issued by General Manager F. E. Weymouth of the Metropolitan Water district reveal that Monday marked the beginning of the fifteenth year of work on the giant 392-mile Metropolitan aqueduct.
Under the direction of the late William Mulholland, who was then chief engineer of the Los Angeles Water bureau, the first surveys to determine a route for the aqueduct were set under way in October, 1923. That part of the work required seven years to complete during which 25,000 square miles of desert territory were surveyed and mapped. The week constituted the largest topographic survey that has ever been undertaken in this country by any agency other than the federal government.
Because of rapidly lowering local water supplies which threatened a serious water shortage, the city of Los Angeles in 1923 set about the task of importing an adequate and guaranteed supplemental supply of water from the Colorado river. Later, 12 other nearby cities faced with the same condition of depleted local water reserves joined with Los Angeles.

rade which will start at 7:30 o'clock. A new line of march has been selected for this year to eliminate congestions at various points. This year the parade will form on East Center street near the Santa Fe depot and will march west on Center street to West street, thence south to Broadway, and thence east on Broadway to the railroad where it will disband.
Three Miles Long
The parade will be some three miles in length, it was announced with approximately 125 floats, cars, marching units and bands taking part. The reviewing stand will be in the 100 block on East Center street.
Immediately upon the completion of the parade two other features will be started, one at the Greek theatre in the city park where a vaudeville program will be presented, and the other on Center street between Los Angeles and Claudina streets where the street dance will be held.
Harry C. Arthur promises an outstanding vaudeville program at the park, artists being furnished by Fanchon and Marco. Admission is free.
A nine-piece band will play for the street dance, Jack Gledhill announced. Admission to this event is also free.
Judging of window displays will take place Thursday evening, with the displays also to be shown Friday evening. For the first time the winning store will be presented with a 31-inch loving cup, which will be a perpetual trophy to be awarded the concern winning it three times.
