50 Years Ago October 1887 Quite a merry party of Anaheimers enjoyed a moonlight ride to Santa Ana Tuesday evening to hear the famous Hungarian orchestra at Spurgeon's hall. All report having had a very pleasant time. Bosner's music most bewitching, probably the best heard on the coast. The orchestra's rendition of "Gypsy Baron," "Orpheus," "Mikado," and especially of the "Estudiantiana" waltz is everywhere considered to be the best ever produced in this country by a limited company of soloists. A four-horse load of excursionists arrived here the other day on a tour through the country. They were the guests of F. L. Mason, proprietor of the Planter's hotel, being old-time Pomona friends of his, and in his usual accommodating and hospitable manner he took excellent care of them. Among the party were P. B. Hogan, T. J. Rockwell, Con Hogan, James C. Leslie (proprietor of Brown's hotel, Pomona), T. C. Thomas (a real estate dealer of note), Samuel C. Campbell, and D. H. Collins of the well-known Chino ranch. Mr. F. H.-Keith met with an accident a few days ago which at one time appeared as if it would have serious results. A hair pin Joseph Fiscus has made his annual invasion into the sanctum, bringing with him his usual donation of soft shell walnuts grown on his famous orchard south of town. Mr. Fiscus is at present harvesting the best crop grown by him in recent years, and if all the output of his orchard is equal to the sample presented the publisher, the Grenoble walnuts now on sale in the market of the Atlantic seaboard had better break for tall timber. William Falkenstein will on the first of January next discontinue his grocery department and will devote his attention exclusively to dry goods and furnishings. The premises now occupied by the grocery department will be devoted to gents' and boys' clothing. The change is made necessary by Mr. Falkenstein's ever-increasing dry goods and clothing trade. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Brunworth, Mrs. Geo. Wisser and Henry Kroeger, Sr., returned some days ago from an auto tour in San Diego county and points in old Mexico. This was Mr. Kroeger's initial trip across the line. He is one of the pioneers of this section but never yet experienced the pleasure of making a trip across the Mexican boundary. The party saw many things to interest them and report a most enjoyable trip through the southern county and region beyond the border. A. Pierotti, one of Place leading orange growers was sititor in town Monday evening, ing over in his automobile Mrs. Pierotti. City Clerk Merritt reports bing permits issued in Oc amounting to $12,550. Mrs. Homer G. Ames retu on Wednesday evening from stein, Ia., where she had been a visit to her parents for six weeks past. Mr. Ames met San Bernardino and returned her to his city. Dr. I. J. Mills of Santa Democratic candidate for a blyman, was in town Mc shaking hands with friends. Collins of the well-known Chino ranch. Mr. F. H.-Keith met with an accident a few days ago which at one time appeared as if it would have serious results. A hair pin penetrated his eye and it was several days before Dr. Bullard was able to give any hope of saving his sight. We are glad to know, however, that the danger has passed and in a few days our old friend will be out again. Mr. J. W. Landell, one of Centralia's aldermen, accompanied by Capt. Ferguson, invaded our sanctum last evening and inspected some of the Gazette's new machinery. Mr. F. J. J. Schmidt and wife have been in town the past week as the guests of Mr. Plez James, since leaving Anaheim Mr. Schmidt has been on a visit to his father in Austria. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt will reside at the Palmyra hotel in Orange during the winter. They will be a decided addition to the social life of our neighboring town. Mr. H. S. Knapp and wife left for Los Angeles on Tuesday where they will hereafter reside. We regret their departure and hope that they will return to Anaheim some time in the future. The Los Angeles Tribune was in error in stating that Plez James foreclosed a mortgage in Anaheim, as it should have stated that the transaction occurred in Santa Ana, not in this prosperous town. Commodore Davis of the Landing baptized his new net one day last week, and succeeded in catching, "just a few fish" the first haul, only something like 16,000 pounds, it wasn't a very good day for fish either. 25 Years Ago Oct. 31, 1912 At the city trustees meeting on Thursday evening permission was granted Theodore Roberts to erect and install a large double dial street clock on the outer edge of Kroger, Sr., returned some days ago from an auto tour in San Diego county and points in old Mexico. Renner. Mrs. Henry M. Adams and two little daughters, Misses Kathryn and Martha Adams are spending the week with friends at Oxnard. Mr. Adams accompanied them there Friday and returned Monday evening. Mrs. W. I. Carver, Mrs. L. C. Blake, Mrs. W. M. Carver and three children, Dale-Quarton and Miss Lois Blake motored to Long Beach on Sunday and enjoyed a day at the sea shore. Captain Williams, Rev. Markle, C. Troutman, Mr. Donohue and J. Gregor went to Huntington Beach on Wednesday morning to attend the Orange County Veterans association.* Victor Browning was in town from his Orangethorpe avenue ranch the first of the week. He reports a bumper walnut yield and things prosperous in his section. A decree quieting title to property owned by Santos Carisosa in this city was entered in the superior court on Friday as against Mrs. Lizzie Witte. Mrs. Eva Boyd, was a visitor in Los Angeles Monday going up to see the owner of the cannery, E. A. Taylor, who is ill at his home in that city. It was learned from Jack W. Snow, director of the Orange county welfare department, who returned recently from the three day session. Merriam stated that he had until recently hoped that improved conditions would permit the discontinuation of the unemployment relief program in the state, but that he was now convinced that such relief must be continued. Increased responsibility for the administration of old age security laws will be shifted to the counties under a new program of handling applications. Snow reported. "At present the state department at Sacramento makes a prompt check on work done by Snow said. "Under the new program the state will investigate county procedures only at irregular intervals through field agents and audit. Full proofs of eligibility will be retained in the county files instead of being referred to Sacaramento for final approval."
