Convicts Attend Cooking Classes Believed to be the first event of its kind in the United States on all-electric cooking school was held recently at the California Institution for Women at Tehachapi under the sponsorship of the Southern California Edison company. The two-day school, directed by Mrs. Ruth T. Erb, widely known home economist, and attended by 50 of the 175 women at the institution, was a unit in the rehabilitation program being carried out under the direction of Miss Florence Monahan, superintendent. "Routine at Tehachapi is designed to assist in adjusting the delinquent woman to a more normal life," Miss Mohalan said. "Although some women inmates apparently cannot be reclaimed for society, there is larger group whose prison treatment decides their future, and it is primarily for them that this character rehabilitation program is planned. By making life 'inside' more normal, we hope to show the women that a life lived within the laws of society is pleasant. Such a concept better equips those who are to be released from the institution for normal living when they return to the outside world." The institution's board of trustees is headed by Mrs. Rose Wallace of Alhambra. Other members include Mrs. Florence Gillis, Fersno; Mrs. Anna Lawes, Oakland; M. B. Brittain, Bakerfield; Lotus H. Loudon, Anaheim. MORE ABOUT A. W. Phelps Leaves Estate to Family An estate of $9,353 was left by Albert W. Phelps, who at the time of his death September 28 was secretary of the Southern County bank of Anaheim, to his widow and two daughters, according to letters of administration filed in superior court. The widow is Mrs. Emma Phelps of Fullerton, and the daughters are Mrs. Nahale P. Dwight and Mrs. Willa P. Prindle, both of Passadena. Not been approved by Orange, La Habra and Buena Park, Hapgood reported. Withdrawal Discussed Following the regular business of the executive board a discussion of Orange's informal request that the city be permitted to withdraw from the district and build its own disposal plant was held. Gordon X. Richmond, city attorney of Orange, outlined his city's position in the matter, declaring it has received state approval of the proposed plant, and that Orange wishes to withdraw from the district. It is hoped, Richmond said, that other members of the district will accept Orange's tentative offer to exchange its interest in the right-of-way and the line for permission to withdraw. Harold McCabe, city attorney of La Habra, informed the group that his city is also considering the advisability of withdrawing and building its own plant. He was not prepared to make any definite statement, however, he said.
