Los Angeles county sheriff's office is in receipt of a Syracuse, New York, paper which gives a racey account of the peccadiloes of one J. W. Mix, whom it alleges is now residing under an assumed name in Anaheim. The Syracuse paper alleges that Mix absconded with $20,000 belonging to other people, and that he deserted an estimable wife and was accompanied in his flight by another woman. It is a tale of villainy of which we are sorry to believe any man guilty.

Tour of Mother Lode Country is Interesting Trip
For those interested in old mining towns, a loop trip through Nevada county, especially now when fall colors brighten the landscape, is suggested by the National Automobile club.
From Sacramento, go via U. S. 40 to Auburn, which started as one of the most exciting and richest mining camps in the state, then north to picturesque Nevada City, which produced eight millions in gold during two feverish years.
From there, the route is east to North Bloomfield, originally called "Humbug," and through Lake City, Graniteville to Bowman Lake. The return is made via the old town of Washington on the bank of the South Yuba river. Just out of Washington are great piles of granite boulders carried there by patient Chinese miners in olden days. From Washington, the route cut through a beautiful wooded area to the Tahoe-Nevada City highway which is followed to Nevada City.
The roads in this tour are not all paved, but they are fair to good and offer no difficulties to those accustomed to mountain driving. They offer much scenic, as well as historic interest.

National Forests In California Set New Mark for Attention
"Outdoor recreation in the national forests of California is in greater demand today than ever before." according to statement of Federal Forester S. B. Show, chief of the California region, U. S. forest service. Travel figures to the 18 national forests of the state for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1937, showed a total of 4,217,000 individual visits to these great mountain playgrounds, an increase of more than 400,000 over the previous record during 1932-33. Show said. He added that this year's figure includes repeated counts of many visitors who returned to the mountains on several occasions.
The four national forests in southern California accounted for than 2½ million visitors; the Angeles leading with a total of one million, followed by the San Bernardino with 773,000 visitors, Cleveland 207,000, and Los Páredes 121,000.
The most popular recreation area in northern California was the Tahoe national forest with 359,000 visitors, followed by the Sierra with 178,000, Eldorado 172,-000, Sequoia 153,000 and Shasta 145,000.
Classification of all visitors to the national forests of the California region showed nearly two million picnickers, a million campers, 675,000 hotel and resort guests and 450,000 summer home permittees and their friends.
Fishing was the most popular outdoor sport and accounted for 610,000 visitors. Winter sports was a close second with 545,000 enthusiasts, and hunters numbered 330,000.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH
The question "Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real?" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon on Sunday in all Church of Christ, Scientist, branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. The Golden Text is from Paul's epistle to the Romans "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."
Among the Bible citations in the Lesson-Sermon are Jesus' words from Matthew: "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy but to fulfill": and these verses, also from Matthew: "When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying,Lord,if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean, and Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying.I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed."
A correlative passage from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, includes the statement: "Jesus proved the Principle, which heals, the sick and casts out error,to be divine."
Delivery Cars Use Streamline Styles
More and more truck and delivery car operators are demanding eye appeal and streamlined styling as well as performance and economy, according to W. E. Scheib. Ford commercial division manager, Long Beach branch.
Scheib pointed out that modern business men are realizing that attractive streamlined units are a definite merchandising aid and that consumers often patronize the business with new, stylish equipment in preference to a firm still using the old, obsolete units. This trend toward eye appeal is one reason that the 1937 Ford V-8 line of trucks and commercial cars has won such universal acceptance. Scheib pointed out.
Classification of all visitors to the national forests of the California region showed nearly two million picnickers,a million campers,675,000 hotel and resort guests and 450,000 summer home permittees and their friends.
Fishing was the most popular outdoor sport and accounted for 610,000 visitors. Winter sports was a close second with 545,000 enthusiasts, and hunters numbered 330,000.
The above figures are for actual users of the national forests only, and do not include the large number of people who travel through these mountain reservations on business or to enjoy the scenery.
The record travel for the year was on the Labor Day week-end in the Angeles and San Bernardino national forests, where a total of 267,000 visitors were checked into these great mountain playgrounds. The forest service is now mak-

Quarterly Federal Reports Eliminated
Quarterly federal social security reports for 1937 were eliminated this week as the result of a far reaching decision by United States Commissioner of Internal Revenue Guy T. Helvering.
Original instructions issued to 57,000 employers in southern California by Nat Rogan, collector of internal revenue for this district, required each employer to file Forms SS-2 and SS-2a on or before October 31st, for the third quarter of the year, ending September 30th. This report for the third quarter will be completely done away with. In its place employers will file a semi-annual return on Forms SS-2 and SS-2a for the last six months of 1937. These returns will be due during the month of January 1938.
Many CCC Enrolles Given Employment
"Since January 1 a total of 919 civilian conservation corps enrollees from 48 camps in the national forests of California have been honorably discharged to accept work with other agencies and employers" was the report of Regional Forester S. B. Show based on a study of enrollee employment made by the U. S. forest service.
"In most cases the opportunity to secure other employment came to these young men as a result of job training received in forest service CCC camps," Show said.
Enrollees offered employment outside the CCC are given honorable discharges upon acceptance of a new job. Those who have made transfers from the CCC since the first of the year are now being employed in positions varying from service station attendants to those of much greater responsibility. Salesmanship, banking, railroading, truck driving and scores of other trades and business callings have been taken up by enrollees.
