Good Taste More Essential For Distinctive Homes Than Money
It doesn't require a mint of money these days to have a home of distinction. Good taste is more essential than unlimited funds. And if customers want assurance and confirmation, most good stores have expert decorators and trained salespeople who will give advice without charge.
A few simple rules help the amateur decorator. Many women ask: "Is it necessary to keep all the furnishings in the room in the same period?" No, Madam, you can mix 18th Century and Modern, French and English. The point is to keep your various elements in harmony in color, size and type. Common sense will tell you not to combine heavy oak furniture with feminine taffeta draperies, or to use a modernistic rug with Louis XV furniture. But you can achieve charming effects by introducing modern backgrounds and simple textured broadloom carpets in traditional rooms.
Another problem that women ask about is the use of plain and patterned furnishings in the same room. Here is a good general rule. If your floor covering is plain, you may use patterned draperies or wallpaper. If your rug or carpet is figured, keep walls and hangings simple. Like all rules, this one was made to be broken occasionally. If patterns are rather different in character, you may mix them. For instance, you wouldn't use a floral carpet, floral wallpaper and floral draperies. But if you have a quaint hook rug design on your floor, you might very well use an Early American wallpaper, keeping your draperies plain. Or with a striped wallpaper you could use a flower pattern, keeping your floor covering plain or of a very simple self-tone texture.
According to a prominent architect America has just begun what was done in Greece 2500 years ago and what Sweden has been doing for decades—combining what is good in past styles with what improvements the present can offer—taking the heritage of the past and bequeathing it, enriched, to the future.
Sombrero drawer pulls, cactus motif trims, tile inserts, Mexican bubble glass panels, authentic hardware inspired by Mexican saddle trims! These are some of the clever ideas incorporated in new bedroom and dining room suites that have distinct Pan-American lines and inspiration.
Work on Tunnel Moving Rapidly
With 848 experienced workmen on the job, the driving of the San Jacinto tunnel is now being carried forward on a normal three-shift per day basis with satisfactory excavation progress, it is reported by F. E. Weymouth, general manager and chief engineer of the Metropolitan Water district.
Excavation progress of 506 feet has been made at the two main tunnel headings since a C. I. O. union called a strike on the San Jacinto tunnel on August 14, and ever since that time has been picking the job and attempting to prevent construction progress, it is said.
At no time since the strike was called, General Manager Weymouth declared, has work on the tunnel been shut down. During the past month, he said, the district has been engaged in methodically and steadily increasing tunnel working forces.

Alpha Beta Stores Among City's Best
Among the more popular food markets in Anaheim are the two Alpha Beta stores, one located at Center and Emily street and the other at Center and Palm streets. Both markets include grocery, fruit and meat markets.
Quality merchandise is the keynote of all Alpha Beta stores, but prices are kept low enough to meet any budget. Stocks are complete, fruit and vegetables are always fresh and meats are of the finest quality.
Mike Mercurio at Valencia Market
Mike Mercurio, former many years affiliated with groceries and meat markets in Anaheim, is now operating the Valencia market at 327 E. Center street.
An independent store, Valencia market sells at prices as low as any other grocery and meat market in the city, Mercurio declares. Stocks are complete in all departments, with only meat of high quality being handled.
Sweaters Popular As Sport Apparel
In pull-over sweaters, there is the baby shaker-knit which is worn under a jacket, or the heavier type which can be used for outdoor activity without a jacket. Preferred with boatneck in plain knit, they take to crew necks in rib design, and occasionally turtle-necks, for that "Hollywood" look. The sleeveless pullover knows many uses, and can be had in any variety of woolens thin or heavy.
Scottish brogues are well liked, the blucher front is making a comeback, moccasin types and wing tips, long grain leathers, and turned down tongues or kilties follow the new trend. Perforations are used weightly, and even in shoes for business wear, soles thicken. Well adapted to these shoe types, and liked in medium browns, are vici kid and reverse calf, smoothies in contrast to the many grained leathers.
Mothers will be able to "park the baby" in care of trained nurses at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition.

Pigskin, mocha and goat are soft, comfortable, and clean to perfection. For all-about wear, the slipon with slashed side is best-liked, but for semi-formal wear in the afternoon and at night the one-button, handstitched type is quite classic.
BLUE DRAPES FAVORED
Of drapery colors, the survey revealed blue of first importance. The Royal Blue shade remains steady, with the gray blues increasing. Pastels are in the second group in importance with the demand increasing for apricot, coral, and dusty pink or rose.
