Specially invited guests were J. A. Clayes, principal and superintendent of the high school district, M. A. Gauer, superintendent of the elementary system, and principals of the elementary schools. Registration at the high school this year exceeds that of the opening week last year. Clayes told the members of the association. The increased enrollment fills the plant to capacity, he added. Told of Program Touching on the building program at the high school, Clayes announced that the first unit of the new gymnasium is near completion, and will be ready for occupancy about the middle of October. The first unit includes only a basketball playing floor and bleachers. It is hoped, the principal said, that the second unit of the building will be started within the year. That unit would include a girls’ basketball floor, showers and dressing rooms for girls and offices. Ultimately, a third unit will be constructed which will bear theCapacity Crowd Expected to Hear Leo Carrillo A capacity crowd looms for the banquet to be given next Thursday night at the Elks clubhouse by the Anaheim chamber of commerce and the Merchants association. Tickets are selling rapidly, it is reported. The feature of the evening will be the appearance of Leo Carrillo, actor and public speaker, as guest speaker of the evening. He has announced his subject as, “California’s Place in the Nation.” Several vaudeville acts and good music will add to the evening’s entertainment, according to Harry C. Arthur, Sr., president of the chamber of commerce. Registration at Schools Growing Total Enrollment Compares With End of Opening Week Last Year Enrollments at Anaheim union high school and in the elementary schools are about on a par with those of last year at the close of the first week of school. The high school is a little ahead of last year; Principal J. A. Clayes reported, while the elementary schools are Rites Conducted For Victims of Traffic Mishap Marvin Thompson, Anaheim Man, and Fullerton Ycuth, Killed Funeral services for Orange county’s 66th and 67th victims of fatal traffic accidents, Marvin Thompson, 26, of Anaheim and Bradley Humphreys, 16, of Fullerton, were conducted Sunday and Monday, respectively. Both were killed in a collision on Manchester boulevard, near Buena Park, last Thursday night. Services for Thompson were conducted from Backs, Terry and Campbell mortuary, here, Sunday afternoon, and those for young Humphreys were conducted from McAuley and Suters chapel, Fullerton Monday morning. Remains of the Anaheim man were shipped to his former home at Weatherford, Texas, for interment. Married Short Time Thompson, an employee of the Val Vita company in Fullerton, had lived in Anaheim only a short time. He was married about four months ago to Nola Emmerson and they made their home at the Olive apartments here. Young Humphreys was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Humphreys, 633 W. The first unit includes only a basketball playing floor and bleachers. It is hoped, the principal said, that the second unit of the building will be started within the year. That unit would include a girls' basketball floor, showers and dressing rooms for girls and offices. Ultimately, a third unit will be constructed which will house the boys' quarters and a swimming pool. Clayes expressed the appreciation of himself and the school board for the cooperation of the public in the school's building program. Situation Improves Gauer compared the situation in the elementary district today with that of a year ago when the Merchants association inaugurated its annual school meeting last year, the speaker said, the outlook for the schools was rather gloomy. However, during the year a bond issue of $195,000 was voted and the federal government approved a PWA grant of $252,-818 to be used in construction of new buildings and remodeling of old structures. "We are not in a position yet to say how far available funds will go in the building program," Gauer said, adding that the school board will do the utmost with the money available. Principals Speak The elementary system superintendent introduced the principals of the various schools, including W. H. Bonney; Fremont; Miss Ruth Williams; Citron; Miss Blanche G. Daniels; Broadway; P. S. Doane; Lincoln; V. O. Elliott; George Washington; B. F. Mattox; Horace Mann; and Mis Fannie C. Pritchell, La Palma. Each spoke briefly. Gauers also called upon E. E. Smith, president of the school board, who discussed briefly the building program as planned. Students at Fremont school, now housed in tent structures, are now being crowded, Gauer told the group. Seventh grades have been established in all schools of the city, thereby reducing attendance at Fremont. No curtailment has been made in the school program, with one or two minor exceptions, Gauer pointed out. Total Enrollment Compares With End of Opening Week Last Year Enrollments at Anaheim union high school and in the elementary schools are about on a par with those of last year at the close of the first week of school. The high school is a little ahead of last year, Principal J. A. Clayes reported, while the elementary schools are running slightly behind the first week of last fall, M. A. Gauer, superintendent, said. Total registrations at the high school this morning were 1057. Because additional registrations are being made daily no effort has been made yet to establish the figure for freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes. Regular classes were started at the high school Monday and students and teachers are settling into the stride of regular classwork, it was said. Behind Last Year At the close of Tuesday's registrations in the elementary system enrollments were 15 behind the total at the close of the first week last year, it was said. Registered in all schools in the system are 1385 pupils. At the close of the first school week in 1936 about 1400 youngsters had been enrolled. The largest enrollment is at George Washington school where 247 students are registered. Fremont has the next largest with 245, followed by Broadway, 209, Citron, 207, Horace Mann, 173, Lincoln, 166, and La Palma, 138. Total registrations in the elementary schools on the first day of school this year were 1366, twenty-two less than the total of 1388 registered on opening day last year, Gauer reported. It was the first time this year that the mercury climbed above the 100-degree mark. Ames and S. C. Hartranft that Dr. Edward Lee Russell, county health department official, be named to the post. Judge Ames is judge of the juvenile court and Hartranft is a member of the juvenile committee. The supervisors objected to Dr. Russell's appointment on the ground that the recommended salary of $3,000 per year was too high. Dr. Russell at present draws a salary of $600 per year as psychiatrist for the juvenile home. Set $175 Salary The supervisors adopted a resolution offered by Steele Finlay denying the request of the juvenile committee for the appointment of a coordinator at any salary in excess of $175 per month. Opposition was also expressed by Supervisor Harry Riley to the appointment of a professional man as an organizer of the program. In a discussion with Judge Ames Riley said, "It is unusual for a professional man to have both professional skill and organization." Elected Today CHAS. H. The even will tify fair at Pomona. The event will be held a week from tomorrow which has been designated as Boy Scout Day at the fair. Members of the troop, which is sponsored by the Elks lodge with Gus Lenain as scoutmaster and Tony Hund as assistant, will be placed at intervals of one mile between Anaheim and Pomona. Each boy will cover the distance on foot, passing along to the next runner the document of greetings. Protections Planned Every precaution is being made to protect the boys. Smaller boys in the troop will travel along level streets, while older boys will cover the Brea canyon section. A motorcycle escort from Anaheim police department will be provided over the entire route, Police Chief J. S. Bouldin assured the scouts. Additional escort will be provided by automobiles carrying scout leaders of the city. Bob Harvey, scoutmaster of the new Masonic troop, No. 71, completed arrangements for the welcome at the fair grounds. Court of Honor With the relay run being held on the same day as Boy Scout Day at the fair, troop members will be able to participate in the court of honor to be held at the fair in connection with the horse show. Harvey, himself, was awarded his Eagle Scout badge at a court some time ago. About four and a half hours will be necessary to complete the run, it is estimated by Scoutmaster Lenain. The boys are expected to average about 12 minutes each for their mile. Speaker Reviews New Motor Laws Review of motor vehicle laws as changed by the last legislature The supervisors adopted a resolution offered by Steele Finlay denying the request of the juvenile committee for the appointment of a coordinator at any salary in excess of $175 per month. Opposition was also expressed by Supervisor Harry Riley to the appointment of a professional man as an organizer of the program. In a discussion with Judge Ames Riley said, "It is unusual for a professional man to have both professional skill and organizational ability." Dr. Russell had been recommended by Judge Ames, who said he believed the doctor to be the ideal man to carry on the organization work which is planned to care for many pre-delinquent cases, lessening the load on the probation department and courts. Budget Allows $3,000 The budget as set up by the supervisors allows $3,000 for the coordinator. This was to have included office space, secretarial help and nurses. The probation department, however, has decided to provide office space and secretarial assistance, thereby removing that expense from the budget, it was said. In recommending Dr. Russell for the position, Judge Ames pointed out that he would enter the program from a scientific viewpoint, thereby striking at the heart of many of the delinquency problems in which children are physically or mentally defective. The county coordinator will work with the coordinating councils of the various cities in the county, it is planned. Growth of State Highways Shown Growth and development of the highway system in California was presented pictorially Tuesday noon to members of the Anaheim Kiwanis club by P. W. Mortimer of United Films, Inc. The films were obtained by Wayne Vardaman, program chairman, through the Union Oil company, his employers. California's maximum speed laws, the speaker said, is based upon two factors, the maximum speed allowed and the conditions under which that speed is exceeded by motorists. The headlight law was changed to require that courtesy beams be used when vehicles approach each other. Clearance lights on trailers more than eight feet in width and separate breaking system for those weighing more than 1500 pounds are required under the new law, Davis revealed. Mann New League Head Mayor of Anaheim is Elected President of State Organization at Convention Being Held at San Jose Charles H. Mann, mayor of the city of Anaheim, was this morning elected president of the League of California Municipalities for the year 1937-1938. Official verification of the election was received by the Gazette about noon today in a telegram from San Jose. The new president succeeds Jean L. Vincenz, commissioner of public works of the city of Frensno, who served during the past year. Mann was elevated today from the position of vice president he has held since Sept. 1936, when he was elected at the annual meeting of the league held in Santa Monica. The election today came near the close of a four-day session at San Jose. Mayor Mann has long been active in the civic affairs of Anaheim. He is now serving on the city council for the second time, having first become a councilman on Aug. 28, 1919 when he was named to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Ralph J. McFadden. Elected in 1922 Mann served out the term of slightly more than two years and was then elected to the council in the spring of 1922. Two Are Injured Mann served out the term of slightly more than two years and was then elected to the council in the spring of 1922. He remained on the board of trustees until January 31, 1924, whe he resigned. The new state organization president remained in private life from that time until the spring of 1932 when friends again persuaded him to enter the contest for councilman. He was easily elected and at the organization meeting of the council immediately after the election he was named chairman by his fellow council members. The chairman of the council automatically becomes mayor of the city. Mann was re-elected in 1936 and was retained as mayor. Active in League As an active member of the Orange County League of Municipalities, Mayor Mann has long been an influence in the guidance of that organization. Three years ago he was named to the board of directors of the League of California Municipalities, two years later being elevated to the vice presidency. The honor bestowed upon Mayor Mann today is shared by the city of Anaheim. Seldom, if ever, has a man from a city of the size of Anaheim been chosen as the president of the organization which encompasses almost every city and town in the state. Other city officials who attended the convention are Councilmen F. A. Yungbluth, Leo J. Sheridan, Charles Pearson and M. W. Martenet, Jr., City Engineer E. P. Hapgood, City Clerk Charles E. Any girl, regardless of age, may enter the contest by sending a picture, either photograph or snapshot, to the Queen Contest, Anaheim chamber of commerce, city hall, together with a letter giving name, age, height, and weight. The photographs will be returned to the enrants in good condition. Selection of the queen and her four maids of honor will be made by a committee of judges who will be unknown to the contestants. The judges will first select from the pictures several girls who will be asked to appear in person. The final selections will then be made. The queen and her court will be honored throughout the two-day festival. They will ride on the Anaheim float in the mammoth parade and will have a prominent part in the costume ball and at the horse show. Statewide publicity for the winning girls is also planned by the publicity committee of the Merchants association. Anaheim has been host to Orange county each Hallowe'en for the past 14 years. This year; however, is the first that a queen has ever been chosen. School Argument Still Unsettled No solution to the controversy between Placentia and Yorba Linda school districts regarding pupils from the Richfield-Yorba district has yet been reached. Both towns claims pupils from the district are attending their schools. Richfield-Yorba district is a part of the Yorba Linda school district, having been transferred last spring. Since then many of the families have dignified their desire to return to Placentia school district.
