There have been big rains throughout Arizona and the railroad has suffered numerous washouts. But compensation is found in the growing grass and in the replenished water sources.
The state Board of Equalization has assessed the railroads of the state as follows: California Southern, $1,264,800; Pajaro and Santa Cruz, $150,000; San Joaquin and Sierra Nevada, $160,000; South Pacific Coast, $500,000; Stockton and Coppeopolis, $2,350,000; Southern-Pacific, $17,000,000; Central Pacific, $20,000,000.
Manuel Arvallo has the prize watermelon at his place on Lemon street. Last year he sold about thirty wagon loads of melons from one acre and this year bids fair to have about the same sized crop. He disposes of most of them here, but occasionally takes a load to The Landing or Long Beach where the prices are much higher.

Arthur Lewis and Herbert Morlon enacted the role of life savers at the Landing one day last week when Wm. Mead of Garden Grove ventured into deep water in the channel and went down twice, when he was pulled ashore by the two young men. He was unseen night they camped among the hills in order to be on hunting grounds early in the day when it was permissable to shoot deer. As light began to appear in the eastern horizon, the party separated and approached the canyon in which the deer was supposed to feed. They were not disappointed. Twenty deer—nineteen bucks and one doe—were discovered by the four men in the valley below, and within two hours from the time of leaving camp, each man was toiling up the hills under the weight of a spiked buck, none of which weighed less than 75 pounds. The first one was bagged by Pete Wisser, but he had an attack of buck fever the first shot and was compelled to fire the second time. The distance was about 300 yards. Mike brought down the second one with an off-hand shot at a distance of almost a quarter of a mile. Bowen and Bayha fired at their victims almost simultaneously but Ernest had a shade the best of it in point of time. He killed his at 200 yards, while Bayha succeeded in getting within 150 yards of his. Each animal was running at full speed when shot, according to the statement of the boys.
On the road down from the camp the hunters meet 100 autos carrying 300 hunters to the same grounds. The boys reached home at 9:30 Thursday evening and the four splendid bucks were displayed in the meat markets the next days when they were dressed and the meat distributed to their friends.

Tunnel Work Continues Line Despite Action of C. I. O. Union

In a statement on the status work on the San Jacinto turbine for Monday, Weymouth said:

Within three weeks from this date if the elements do not interpose and no accidents occur, the municipal spetic tank will be completed and Anaheim's sewer system will be complete so far as the city is concerned. It remains then only for the property owners to connect their buildings with the mains, and transfer their waste water from the cess pools into the sewer.
C. E. Chamberlain, who was awarded the contract at $3,700 and who constructed the sewer system, is in personal charge of the work and claims that the people can begin making connections with the mains within three weeks. All property owners will be compelled to connect with the sewer, the suburban dwellers probably being granted more time than business houses and close-in residents by the trustees, but within a few months all residents will be expected to comply with this requirement.
Five thousand dollars per acre is a pretty stiff figure to pay for land even in Orange county, but $200,000 was recently offered J. F. Nenno for his 40 acre ranch near Placentia by a Los Angeles man. In addition to its fruit the place is supposed to be rich in oil.
The Pythian sisters were entertained Saturday evening by the Knights. An excellent program was rendered and refreshments served. Short addresses were made by Messrs. Davis and Angel and Mesdames Hatfield, Angel and Hedges.
At 8 o'clock on Thursday, August 8, at the home of the bride's parents, Miss Frances M. Tedrick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Tedrick, was united in marriage to Frederick H. Weisel, Rev. Zeigler officiated. The wedding was witnessed by only a few intimate friends. After partaking of a wedding breakfast the young couple departed by automobile for Seven Oaks where they expect to sojourn for a week or two, after which they will be at home to their many friends in Anaheim.
Joseph H. Giltz and Miss Bertha Horwitz were married at Santa Ana on Thursday, August 15, by Justice of the Peace Cox. The groom is an employee of the gas company and for three years has been engaged in a responsible capacity with that corporation. The bride is a popular member of her social set. The newly married couple will reside in this city and have the felicitations of many friends for their future happiness and prosperity.
Sheriff C. E. Ruddock returned Monday night from a trip of a month in which he visited cities in Wisconsin and the Dakotas. He stopped two or three days at Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, and edged within 150 yards of his.
"I desire also to correct a fact report to the effect that the strikers have delegated some of their own number to do maintenance and safety work in the tunnel. The fact is that all necessary maintenance and safety work on the tunnel is being done by me selected by and, of course, under direct supervision of the district. Representatives of the strikers are doing none of safety and maintenance work."
"I believe that a large proportion of the men involved are willing and anxious to return to work and its is expected that an increasing number of these men will soon return to the job."
"It should be pointed out that no complaints have been made concerning wages or working conditions. The strikers have mandated that Local 270 of Mine, Mill, and Smelter unions recognized as the exclusive right of qualified district citizens to obtain employment on aqueduct."

Bagging the limit for the day, and half the limit for the season, before 8 o'clock on the opening day of the deer season, was the experience of four of Anaheim's intrepid hunters on Thursday morning. The party consisted of Mike Lopez, Erwin Bayha, Ernest Bowen and Pete Wissef. The boys left Anaheim at 1 o'clock on Tuesday, and traveled to their destination, the Santa Clara creek canyon, 100 miles to the north-east, by easy stages. Wednesday

They are being placed at points of vantage and are over three feet high and four feet wide. Security Roll of County Increases
Old age security rolls in Orange county reached 1590 as of July 31. It was learned from a report submitted to the board of supervisors Tuesday by Welfare Director Jack W. Snow.
Department administrative costs dropped to a new low in July. Snow's report shows. For all types of administrative work the total cost was $2.36 per case or 8.8% of the total expended through the department. In June the cost was $2.59 per case or 9.5% of the total.
The total county case load was 2922 at the end of July, an increase of 322 over June. Practically the entire increase was due to old age security applications which were taken under investigation.
There are now 473 children receiving orphan aid in Orange county, according to the report, an increase of five cases over June totals. Eight new blind aid cases were added bringing the state aid rolls here up to 59.
During July there was a decrease of 17 in the number of unemployable cases receiving indigent relief bringing the total down to 582.
Prohibition will be remembered as the era when hair tonic gave the results which the buyer hoped for.

Business School Will Open Here
Opening of a school for business training in Anaheim was announced this week by C. E. Perry, head of the institution. Classes will start on September 7.
The school will provide instruction in all types of business training, including secretaryship and accountancy. Students of secretarialhip will not only be taught typing and shorthand but will also receive instruction in bookkeeping and accounting. They will be given training designed to prepare them to fulfill the duties of a practical secretary.
Teaching of accountancy will also include instruction in economics, mathematics and law, all of which will be correlated in the one class.
Perry, at present an accountant in Santa Ana, has had 30 years experience in that work and as a teacher in high schools and colleges. During the past winter he taught in the adult evening high school at Santa Ana and this summer served on the faculty of Santa Ana junior college's summer session.
Further information about the school may be obtained by telephoning 2414 for a personal interview with Perry.
Unemployables are Returned to Homes
Twenty-seven unemployable transients who applied or were referred to the Orange county welfare department for aid, were returned to their homes in other states during July and the first two weeks of August, it was learned from Welfare Director Jack W. Snow this week.
Included in the welfare budget is a special transportation allowance out of which to pay the fare for the return of stranded non-employable persons. Railroads cooperate by allowing the county a special low rate.
Four single persons and nine families were included in the number returned. They were largely residents of Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. Only unemployable persons are entitled to be returned through the welfare department.
County officials consider that the cost of returning unemployable persons to their home state or place of residence is much less than the continued cost of giving them care here.
