Sheppard to Name Two to Academies Congressman Harry R. Sheppard will appoint two boys to the United States Military academy in 1938 and one to the Naval academy. “Any boy in the 19th district is entitled to an opportunity to compete for these appointments,” stated Sheppard, “I have contacted the United States civil service commission and they have agreed to give a competitive examination on November 6th of this year for all boys in my district who wish to compete,” he added, “The boys receiving the highest grades will receive the appointmentts regardless of political affiliation, race or creed.” Sheppard stated that any boy wishing to compete for these appointments must file their request with his office before September 15. All candidates are required to be citizens of the United States and must not less than 16 years of age nor more than 20 years of age by April 1, 1938, for the Naval academy nor less than 17 years or more than 22 years by April 1, 1938, for the Military academy. Candidate cannot be less than 5 feet 4 inches in height. regitation, reclamation, water, and other districts is not reported to the state controller, and these figures, therefore, are not included uniformly in the total or per capita figures presented by the association. Government debt, the association warned, is progressively becoming more and more burdensome. With the federal government reporting a gross public debt at June 30, 1937, of $36,425,000- County's Bonded Debt is Revealed Ttotal Nears $10,000,000 As of June 30, 1936: Per Capita Figure High Bonded debt outstanding of the governmental units in Orange county totalled $9,952,206, or $76.87 per capita as of June 30, 1936, according to findings of California Taxpayers' association. Total bonded debt in the county was made up of $540,000 for the county government, $4,158,000 for the school districts, $1,483,747 for special districts, and $3,700,459 for municipalities within the county, the association found. In only one California county, Mono, no local bonded indebtedness was shown at June 30, 1936, the study brought out, while the per capita debt in Trinity county was but 22 cents and that in Amador county but 29 cents. Other counties in which the local bonded indebtedness averaged less than $20 per capita were Sierra, $1.66; Plumas, $3.17; Tuolumne, $11.20; Alpine, $11.40; Sacramento, $1.45; Siskiyou, $12.41; Calaveras, $18.44; Kern, $18.53; and San Benito, $18.87. Counties in which local bonded indebtedness averaged over $100 per capita were Colusa, $436.98, due largely to reclamation district bonds; Los Angeles, $153.15; San Diego, $113.87; and San Luis Obispo, $101.01, the association found. The indebtedness of many irrigated, reclamation, water, and other districts is not reported to the state controller, and these figures therefore are not included uniformly in the total or per capita figures presented by the association. Government debt, the association warned, is progressively becoming more and more burdensome. With the federal government reporting a gross public debt at June 30, 1937, of $36,425,000,-000, and the total California state debt outstanding at $121,373,787 as of May 15, 1937, it behooves each taxpayer to scrutinize carefully each and every proposal to increase the debt of any governmental unit of which he is a part—for every dollar of that debt must be repaid in taxes. Wahlberg, who has been delegated by the University California to direct the group here. The visitors plan to farm areas of the Pacific while in this country, land-off San Pedro on Monday and starting from Vancouver, B.C., at two weeks hence. Arriving from Los Angeles through La Habra valley, they will meet at Fullerton at 9:00 o'clock with Wahlberg and conducted through the citrus area, arriving the Santiago packing house, Orange, at 9:30. Here they will be shown the various citrus packing and iceing operations by V. D. Johnson, secretary of the Orange chamber of commerce; and others. Thence through the Tustin and Santa Ana orchard districts, and over Lemon Heights to the Irvine ranch. W. B. Hellis, manager, and Owen Murray, foreman, will explain walnut irrigation and cultural operations at this point. Continuing to the San Joaquin Fruit ranch, the group will be met by C. V. Newman, manager, and also president of Calavo Growers, who has arranged field demonstrations on orange and lemon irrigation, pest control methods, windbreak protection, and avocado culture. At noon, at this ranch, a picnic luncheon will be served by the home department of the farm Bureau, headed by Mrs. A. E. Christensen, of Anaheim. Following the luncheon, an official welcome will be given by Willard Smith, chairman of the board of supervisors; Dian Gardner, president of the Orange county farm bureau, will also greet the group. Municipal Camps Proving Popular The generous rainfall last winter has helped to make the Los Angeles municipal camps more popular for late vacations this year than for many years, reports the National Automobile club. The great forests of the San Bernardino mountains surround Camp Seeley are green and spring-like, and the full streams will preserve this freshness until late in the fall. Early season heavy snows and rains kept fishing from reaching its peak at Camp High Sierra near Mammoth Lakes, Mono county, therefore excellent angling is assured for late summer. Early reservations are necessary. Vacationers may enjoy an outing at either camp for surprisingly little cost.
