The howl of the coyote is heard at night in the vicinity of vineyards, he knows that grapes are beginning to ripen as well as "two-legged coyotes" who are beginning to destroy grapes by pulling off and throwing away bunches of half ripe and green fruit in their nocturnal visits to the vineyards. It would be well to post a watchman to be on the lookout for these people.
A Sunday at Long Beach is very much like Sunday at more wicked places. Just read the following from our correspondent, "The shooting in this vicinity should bring many sportsmen here. A party of three from the hotel went out for a few hours this afternoon with their double-barrels and brought home fifty-five ducks, many of which were fat mallards. The manner of passing a day here can be arranged to suit all tastes. For instance: Today some exercises were going on most all the time at the tabernacle; bathing was kept up all day; the tennis court was occupied by active groups of players; the shooting party referred to hunted their sport; Captain Banning had his six-in-hand and coach out with a party of friends, and driving, resting, walking on the beach and flirting occupied others."

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday morning opened bids for the construction of two county bridges, one a concrete bridge across the river west of Santa Ana and the other a wooden span bridge across the Santiago creek on Tustin avenue. The contract for the first bridge went to R. L. Hogue of Los Angeles for $18,350, and the contract for the Tustin avenue bridge went to Mercereau bridge and construction company of Los Angeles for $7480. Owing to various difficulties the letting of a contract for the West Fifth street bridge has been held up for several months. The old bridge was torn out to give passage to the dredges working on the river and a temporary wooden structure has been doing service ever since. The new bridge will be of modern type, of concrete, and once built will do for many years.
The Tustin Avenue crossing has never had a bridge. The traffic on this street is of considerable consequence, particularly for the hauling of oranges, and the bridge will be of great convenience.
