Gain Is Seen In Security Costs New Hornblower Bill Will Increase Amount of Tension Checks Sweeping increase in the cost of old age security is forecast by the state department of social welfare. It was learned this week from County Welfare Director Jack W. Snow. Most of the increase will be brought about under terms of the liberalized Hornblower bill which passed the state senate last week and which is virtually assured of the governor's signature. Even under existing legislation it was recently forecast that by June 1938 92,000 persons would be on old age assistance rolls. "Under the new law the average old age check will rise to nearly $34, as compared with approximately $31 at the present time," Snow said. "Under the present law deductions are made for earnings and free rent. Under the proposed law each old age security recipient will be allowed $15 monthly earnings in addition to his check, and there will be no free rental deduction for persons living in their own homes. However, there will be no change in the responsibility of children for the care of their parents under the new bill." Hundreds of already eligible aged in Orange county have withheld their applications for aid rather than accept a state lien on their property for assistance advanced. The new bill will not require liens on new applications, and will release some 300 liens already in effect. The Hornblower bill will also make it easier for many applicants to prove their age, which will remove a barrier at present preventing the acceptance of many persons. In actual practice, the federal government reimburses the county for 44% of the money paid out for old age security, while the state reimburses the county for 28%. As a result Orange county pays but 28% of the total bill. Ash tray: Any squatty dish built on the theory that nobody smokes more than three cigarettes. NOTICE INVITING SEALED PROPOSALS FOR FURNISHING DISINTEGRATED GRANITE Notice is hereby given that sealed proposals will be received by the City Council of the City of Anaheim at the office of the City Clerk of said city, up to the hour of eight o'clock P.M. of Tuesday, the 8th day of June, 1937, for furnishing to said city approximately 1200 tons of disintegrated granite to be delivered to Santa Ana Street between Lemon Street and Manchester Boulevard in such quantities and at such times as the city engineer may direct. Said disintegrated granite shall comply with Section 10 of the specifications entitled "State of California, Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, Standard Specifications, January, 1935," except that the maximum size of such material shall be 1½". Each proposal must be accompanied by a certified or cashier's check payable to City of Anaheim in the amount of Fifty Dollars ($50.00). Such check of the successful bidder will be held by the City until the delivery and acceptance of the granite. The City Council of said city reserves the right to reject any or all proposals.
