East Coachella Tunnel Finished Water District's Largest Bore Completed; Is 34 Miles Long Completing the longest tunnel on the Metropolitan aqueduct, water district crews last week placed the last concrete in the lining of the 18-mile-long East Coachella tunnel. As a part of the giant water supply system that will carry water clear across the state of California, this tunnel has a lined diameter of 16 feet, and is 998,605 feet in length, making it one of the longest in the world. The East Coachella tunnel is one of a group of ten tunnels built by the Metropolitan water district north of the Coachella valley and having a total length of 34 miles. As an aid in relieving the acute unemployment situation existing in southern California in 1932, the construction of this set of tunnels was authorized as a force account project by the water district in December of that year. Since December 23, 1932, an average of 1,300 men per day have been employed on this one feature of the Metropolitan aqueduct. The construction of these 34 miles of tunnels involved the excavation of more than two million cubic yards of rock, and the concrete lining required the use of more than a million barrels of cement. Excavation of the Coachella group of tunnels was the first construction to be started on the 392-mile Metropolitan aqueduct, and their completion marks one of the most important phases in the task of bringing a billion gallons of water a day from the Colorado river to the southern California areas in the water district. In addition to the tunnels just completed, the aqueduct has 28 SENAGRAMS By HARRY C. WESTOVER The legislature came to a turbulent conclusion last Sunday morning at four o'clock. The clock had been stopped at 4:30 Friday afternoon and in the late hours of the night Saturday, one of the pages was heard to remark, "Gee, but this has been a long day." All pay stopped for the attaches Friday, so work Friday night, Saturday, Saturday night and Sunday morning was on the tree list. For the first time in the history of the legislature, the assembly was ready to adjourn before the senate. One of the reasons of the delay in the senate was the fact that many of the senate bills had been amended in the assembly and had to come back for concurrence by the senate. One of the big issues at the session of the legislature, was that of oil. It commenced during the first week in January and was the last issue disposed of it adjournment. The adjournment was held up for more than an hour because of a conference between the assembly and senate committee over terms of the Wilmington Oil bill. After the report had been prepared by the committee it had to be taken to both houses for their approval. The senate speedily approved the report of the committee and adjourned and snii die. However, some of the members of the assembly, irrespective of the fact that it was four o'clock Sunday morning and that the assembly had been in session continuously since Saturday night, still wanted to talk and when the members of the senate wearily took their way down the hall and out of the capitol building, the voice of Assemblyman Seth Millington could still be heard hara- Excavation of the Coachella group of tunnels was the first construction to be started on the 392-mile Metropolitan aqueduct, and their completion marks one of the most important phases in the task of bringing a billion gallons of water a day from the Colorado river to the southern California areas in the water district. In addition to the tunnels just completed, the aqueduct has 20 other tunnels on it, the total length of all tunnels being 108 miles. At the present time, more than 103 miles of these have been excavated, and more than 92 miles of tunnels have been lined with concrete and completed. With a total of 6,500 men directly employed at the present time, the Metropolitan aqueduct is 62 per cent completed. Based on the present rate of construction progress, it is estimated that the project will be put into operation in 1939. Total of Autos in State is 2,000,000 In the first three months of 1937 the number of pleasure cars registered in California exceeded 2,000,000. Howard E. Deems, registrar, announced today. During this time 2,007,486 automobiles were registered as compared with 1,873,065 in the same period last year, an increase of 7.13 per cent. Total fee paid registration increased from 2,072,284 in 1936 to 2,232,415 for this year, an increase of 7.73 per cent. Summer's Coming! PENNEY COMPANY, INCORPORATED 124 West Center Street ANAHEIM GAZETTE Information which the obtained during the session legislature, disclosed that the history of the legislature, California, there has been outstanding speakers Edgar y of San Francisco, Governor Merriam of Long Beach and Craig of Brea are record- those who have been fami- chapital history for many years, to be the most successful speakers who have ever presided in the assembly. Ted Craig is spoken of with high regard and he was liked by all factions. Ted gave up his position in the assembly and the speakership in order to become a member of the third house. Examination of legislation, which was finally passed by the legislature, will disclose how strong the third house is at Sacramento. Paid professional lobbyists, through years of experience and contact, are able to guide the course of legislation. They have great influence and control. Some of the special interests came away from the 52nd session of the legislature with nearly 100 per cent batting average. Some of the special interests, because of poor leadership, did not fair at During the past five m have been trying to give readers of this column an ed report' of some of the which happen in Sacramento which are not found in the papers. During the past five months, I have been trying to give to the readers of this column an unbiased report of some of the things which happen in Sacramento and which are not found in the newspapers. Much of the real news of the legislature is never published and only those who attend a session of the legislature and who are on the inside, know what makes and unmakes laws. The record in Sacramento, by legislators, is not made by the way one talks but by the way he votes. An examination of the senate and assembly Journals will give more indication as to the standing of representatives than idle or boastful statements. In the assembly Orange county was well represented. I cannot close this series of articles without expressing my thanks and appreciation to the newspapers who have so kindly published them. Some of the papers have been generous with their space. To all the 'papers who have used these articles, in whole or in part I wish extend my sincere appreciation. TOES!
